I just want to let everyone know that I really appreciative all your wonderful reviews. I have been asked (twice) by AFF.net to not tack on my replies to your reviews. They would like me to use aff.net forum to reply to them. Unfortunately, that Forum is incredible confusing so for the moment I am going to reply using my use my livejournal account and create a special post for each chapter on all the reviews of that chapter.
But at the moment it is 300am and I’m tired. So here the chapter. I will edit this page with the review link when I finally get up for the day. Night all enjoy the story. =D
Chapter Eight.
‘The word you are looking for here, Kieran, is whipped. You are whipped.’ Kieran could just hear how Brion would have heckled him if he was around. His head turned to down to the small boy hugging him around as much of his waist as his tiny arms could reach. ‘I can’t believe this. How did I get this bad? It only been two fricking days and I’m already a puddle in his tiny little hands… I can’t believe that he’s getting me to help his abusers. I just don’t get his sense of honor. If it was me I would seriously rip them limb from limb….Better get this over with… Maybe I can use this to gain the boy’s trust a little.’ He reluctantly pushed the overjoyed boy away and made his way back into the chamber.
Skif followed alongside, his elation fading a bit as he thought of the task at hand. ‘ OK, I need get the stuff ready first. Llyr doesn’t want to help so I need to make this fast or he might back out… I should try to do this all done in one go. What do I need? Some water, food, medical supplies, their clothes and some blankets… Crap…’
Skif slowed to a stop, causing Kieran to stop also and turn back to see what was wrong. It was easy to read the guilt and embarrassment on his mate’s oh so expressive face.
“Llyr? I hate to have to ask this, but I need ask a couple favors… You’re still not going to let them out, are you?” Kieran replied with a quick “no”, so Skif continued.
“Well I’m going to need to borrow some stuff….. I’m so grateful that you let me have this stuff already.” He said as he clutched the worn cloth to his chest, bowing his head sheepishly, “But I need some stuff for the knights… It’s nothing really, just a few small things. A few water skins, some more fresh bandages, some blankets… Maybe the knights clothes… All small things really. But I was wondering if I could borrow some from your treasure pile?” Skif pointed at the debris pile next to the boulder.
Kieran could feel the boy’s nervousness at a having to ask yet another favor on top of his uneasiness that came from the silly myths about Dragons being homicidally protective of their treasure. ‘Why is he nervous now? I haven’t snapped at him for going in through it already. What do I care? He is my mate. Well, mate-to-be. But still he should be sitting on top of it surrounded by all my precious stuff… yeah some of the sparkly baubles are nice and we dragons are practically part crow when it came to shiny objects. But most of that stuff is just crap. I took of those idiotic, self-delivering, breakfast knights ‘cause it was easier then digesting all that extra roughage. I’m actually kind of glad he can find some use for it at all.’
With a nodded affirmative, Kieran gently pushed the boy forward towards the pile.
Unfortunately Kieran’s little push sent the boy tumbling several feet forward to just in front of the pile, narrowly missing a protruding point of a rusty spear, sticking out from the pile in front of him.
Kieran cringed at his mate’s near fatal fall. ‘Fuck…I nearly killed him….. I need to be way more careful. I need to consider human-proofing this place some more.’
Luckily Skif seemed oblivious to the seriousness of his tumble, as he quickly got himself up and turned back to Kieran. “Ahh… Thanks… I mean, thank you, Llyr. I have a few more things I need to ask you for. Is that okay...?” Skif paused waiting for Kieran okay.
‘Well he certainly is an interesting one, that’s for sure. He was so strong and determined not ten minutes ago, but now he’s nervous over how angry I will be over his little request.’ Kieran gestured for Skif to ask away.
“Well, I was wondering if I might be able to take some of those wonderful apples you brought for me… and well, give them to the Knights. You see, they haven’t had anything to eat in two days and they must be really hungry.”
‘Well good, let them starve. They deserve it for what they did to you…’ Kieran growled low, clearly unhappy with the idea but he nodded his head “yes”.
Skif continued on. “The last thing I need is if you move one of the Posrothaina boulders inside their… cell too…? It would help with the caring of Sir Fredrick’s injures. It is also very cold and dark in there.”
Kieran nodded “yes” despite his desire to leave the nasty knights to rot in their cold, dark hole. When the boy gave him an unsure look, Kieran huffed and made a “hurry up” gesture with his hand.
The boy quickly got to work, first grabbing the knights clothes and some extra bedrolls. He went through every pack he could find and sorted out anything that might be useful off to the side, like extra bandages and medical supply sacs still in good condition, all the water skins he could find and even a few buckets. He took extra care to always show Kieran what he was doing making sure not to touch any of the jewels or look like he was trying to sneak the knights in any weapons.
Once he gathered enough stuff, Skif made his way outside with several of the water skins and an empty bag. Kieran followed out of curiosity. He watched as Skif went over to the wall he had peed on earlier and began emptying out the contents of each of the skins, using some to wash away the smell of his pee with the wine and beer left in them, some of which had clearly gone bad long ago. Once they were all empty Kieran saw Skif make his way over the stream coming from the cave and dunked each skin in filling them again. At first Kieran thought he was done, only to watch him walk back to the other side of the ledge and empty them all over again.
It took Kieran a moment to figure out what exactly he was doing. ‘Huh. Despite his appearance he really is organized and into cleanliness. He is very careful and bright too. He doesn’t seem to want to ruin his only water supply… It must be killing him to be covered in so much dirt. I know that water from the pond is near freezing, being snow melt. I really should find a nice spot for him to bathe later…”
Skif refilled the skins a little further upstream then where he had first filled them. Laying them down next to entrance, the boy picked up the empty bag he had brought and made his way to the apple tree. Kieran watched as he bent himself over, kneeled and squeezed between the branches to get the apples. His little one didn’t let his many injures get in his way despite the obvious pain he was in every time a branch rubbed against his sunburned back or poked his injured shoulders and wrists.
Skif managed to collect a dozen or so apples, which he placed in the bag. Once he extracted himself from the tree, he went top pick up the water skins as well. Kieran could feel the pained expression on the boy’s face as he felt the phantom pains from the mindlink as Skif’s shoulders ached from the weight.
Kieran quickly reached over and took the bag and water skins away. When Skif gave him a confused look he just huffed and made his way back inside.
He placed them next to the boy’s supplies. Skif launched himself into organizing all the stuff into different bags; one for clothes, one for bandages and medical supplies and another two stuffed full of bedrolls.
When everything was in place and double-checked Skif fetched his own glowing stone from his personal gear before returning to stand next to the bags, waiting for Kieran to move the boulder aside.
Kieran grabbed one of the smaller Posrothaina stones he had carved off the wall when he first got here and placed them around the room. With a deep breath, he called forth his internal fire and blasted the stone ‘til it shone as bright as day. Over the thundering roar of his fire Kieran’s ears picked up the boy’s frightened yelp and the sound of him tripping over his bags in surprise.
Kieran couldn’t help but laugh at the comical look of embarrassment on his mate’s little face as he picked himself up. “I’m so glad I amuse you Llyr, but you could have warned me.” His little one said as he dusted himself. “Umm… If it’s okay with you I would like to try to talk to them before we start, if that’s okay with you… See, there’s this little hole off to the side of the boulder, I used it before to talk to them…Well, I want to try to warn them to stay back when you move the boulder and not to try to attack you again. I need to explain that you won’t hurt them unless they try to hurt you… You won’t hurt them, will you?” Skif asked very nervously as he looked up at Keiran as if unsure.
‘I’m really starting to get annoyed with all this “I don’t trust you” crap. I said I won’t eat them so I won’t eat them. That should be good enough, right...? Besides, precious, you should be more worried about them hurting you. They already have a history of abusing you unlike me… Hmm. They might be desperate enough to attack him anyway… Maybe I should just toss the stuff in and seal them back up… I don’t think Skif would go for that. He is planning to check on Sir Francis or what’s his name’s wound… I need a way to keep my hand him, in case I need to pull him out of there if they try anything.’ Kieran thought as he looked over at the debris pile for ideas.
A long length of climbing rope that some hapless Knight or Squire who had no doubt used it to get to Keiran’s lair was woven into the pile. ‘Perfect! Just what I need.’ Kieran pulled the rope free. It was about twice the length of Kieran’s tail, and when tested Kieran, it proved to be quite strong. Little Skif watched on in confused amazement.
‘Now it time for more hand gestures… Crap. I can’t wait for this stupid month to be up so I can just tell him what I want…’ It took a few minutes for kieran to figure out how exactly he was going to say it.
Snapping his fingers, to get Skif’s full attention, Kieran began laying down the ground rules before they started.
First: I will not eat them, or hurt them. Second: they don’t come out. If they do I will eat them. Third: if they touch you I will eat them. Fourth: if they even touch you I will eat them.
It took a little time, what with gesturing and re-gesturing when Skif got confused but eventually he finally got it. Once Skif agreed to the terms, Kieran picked up the rope and demonstrated tying it around his own waist then held it up to Skif with his best expectant look his scaly face could muster.
“You want me to tie that around my waist like a leash? You really want to leash me?” Skif asked.
Kieran nodded.
He could feel Skif’s annoyance at the very idea of needing to be leashed, through the mindlink. “Llyr! I thought you said I wasn’t a slave… You said we were ‘heart-linked’. I promised not to run away. I don’t need to be leashed. You can trust me!”
Kieran quickly replied by pointing at Skif and nodding adamantly “yes” and then pointing toward where the knights were and just as unwaveringly shook his head “no”.
“You trust me but not them? Llyr, they’re not going to do anything to me I know them.” Skif replied.
Completely inflexible on the leach point, Kieran tried one more time. Holding the rope up he shook his head “no”, then pointed at the knights and shook his head “no” again. Kieran then dropped the rope and started once again for the nest chamber. ‘I’m not going to play games with your safety, little one, and that’s final. Go on and cry if you want to but the answer still will be no.’
Kieran didn’t get too far before Skif caved, “Fine, Llyr. I will live with the leash. Okay? Just let me explain to them what’s going on first.”
A quick nod and Kieran made his way back. Skif tied the rope around his waist, tightly but not painfully so. Kieran made sure it was secure by giving it a quick tug which sent Skif careening forward to his knees, barely catching himself from falling on his face. When Skif looked up Kieran smiled sheepishly. ‘Sorry… At least we know the knot will hold and it is works.’ Kieran began wrapping the other end of the rope around his hand, and squeezed it tight.
Skif made his way over to a small hole on the side of the boulder that Kieran had not noticed before. When Kieran leaned in closer he could make out the sound of three of the knights arguing, though he could not make out what they were saying as it came out all mumbled together with a fourth voice occasionally groaning in pain.
“Milords? Milord Erik?” Skif called into the hole.
The voices all quieted. After a moment clear voice called back, “Well, if it isn’t my traitorous little squire. When we sent you for help we didn’t mean for you to bring the damn beast down on us.” Kieran could not miss the malevolence in the voice or the way that Skif flinched. He fought back his growl.
“Sir Erik… I didn’t… I would never do that… I tried to go for help but the trail gave way…Then the dragon found me and brought me back to the cave. He destroyed… The trail is gone—there is no way out of here… I tried. I really tried to get help, Sir. I swear, Milord. I swear on my honour as a…”
The boy’s plea was cut short. “And what kind of honor is that? Any have you posses, little whore, is worth less than the horse shit on my boots. I really don’t know why I thought you could accomplish such a task when you are incapable of following the simplest orders.” The odious knight bellowed.
“I know you don’t really mean that Sir,” Skif pleaded. “You are just scared, right sir?”
“SHUT YOUR TRAP YOU WORTHLESS SLUT!” The knight bit back. “Real Knights, like me… like us, never get scared. And I damn well do mean it. You can’t do anything, ever. Don’t you dare speak of that which you do not know, slut!”
Despite the knight’s denial Kieran could smell his fear. And even if his nose had missed it his ears would have clearly caught the trembling in his voice he covered by the yelling louder.
‘What an odious bastard. This guy wouldn’t know a real knight if one stabbed him in the heart. I’ve known more real Knights than this prick could imagine. Or eaten them at any rate. And I knew for a fact that they can be just as scared as scared as anyone else. I have seen several “real” knights that have wet their armour at the mere sight of me. And let me tell you they screamed just like little girls when I ate them.’ Again Kieran bit back another growl because Skif was nervous enough as it is.
Skif didn’t look at him, but Kieran could feel how embarrassed he was that Kieran heard Sir Erik’s insults after having put so much energy and effort into begging for Kieran’s help. “Yes Sir, Sorry Sir…” Skif replied very submissively.
Apparently the loathsome bastard was not done tearing the kid up yet because he launched a second assault, “So what has your lazy ass been up to all this time? Huh? I bet you were probable playing around in the fiery beast’s treasure. Probably stuffing your pockets with treasure, little thief. Or were you playing dress up in all those jewels pretending to be a princess like the slutty little bitch you think you are?”
“No, Sir Erik! I was trying to get you out like you asked… I… I… I have even managed to get the Dragon to agree let me…. He’s going to help me… He’s letting me give you food, water and clothes… I can help Sir Fredrick…” Skif turned to stare at Kieran with his beautiful, greenish-grey puppy dog eyes, silently imploring Kieran not to change his mind and renege on his promise.
Kieran just smiled and nodded offering Skif support. ‘Just say the word little one. And I will pop his head off fast as lighting.’
“Stop your lying you little whore. No one is going to believe your deceitful story. You are probably trying to save your own worthless ass. You should be ashamed with yourself for trying to stab us in the back all for …”
Before Kieran could rip the boulder aside, and kill the bastard, someone else stepped in. Another Knight cut him off before he can say another word, “Shut up Erik. You damn well know that Skif is completely loyal to you, to us. He doesn’t have a disloyal bone in his body.” Kieran was very pleased that someone was finally put the damn prick in his place and was defending his mate’s character, but his joy was short lived. “Hell, he doesn’t have the brainpower to even think something that complicated up. Just let us just see what the brat has to say.”
Skif let out as sigh, relieved that he was finally being listened too. “Thank you, Sir Thomas. Thank you.”
“Just get on with it, brat.” The Knight growled out.
“Yes Sir.” Skif wasn’t as confident now but still he tredged on. “Before I can help you, I need you to agree to some stuff firsts. I need you all to promise not to try to escape…”
Sir Erik cut in, “ See! See! He is trying to feed us to that scaly demon.”
“Quiet, Erik…. Skif, Sir Erik has a point; the Dragon will surely eat us. You can’t expect us to just let him do that, can you?”
“Of course not, Sir Thomas but he won’t. Llyr… The dragon promised that he won’t eat anyone unless they try to escape. There is nowhere to, go anyway. The trail is in gone.” Skif continued quickly trying to explain before someone else jumped in and they stopped listening to him, “Sir Thomas, you have tried twice and failed. You can’t fight him. Please! And this won’t be for long… I’m …I’m trying to get him to agree to release you. We’re communicating. I might be able to get him to release you. But I just need a little more time. Just a bit longer. Please! I have food and water, clothes, blankets and medicine.” Kieran’s little one stared at him as if he had said too much. Kieran could hear in his internal fear that Kieran would think he was going back on his promise, when he was merely trying to save the Knights’ lives.
The Knights were silent in their lightless cage, except for the pained groans of Sir Fredrick. Skif wrung his hands as he waited nervously for their reply.
Sir Thomas was the one who finally broke the silence, “Alright. If we agree to not run, he won’t hurt any of us, right? Do we have your sworn word before Ghaskia lord of thunder and truth, heavenly slayer of the oath breakers?”
Before Skif could swear, The Prick found his voice again. “Thomas Before Skif could swear,
The Prick found his voice again, “Thomas! You can’t seriously be considering this. Not after what it did to Fredrick. To Godfrey and William. TO US! It will eat us all. This is a ruse—a sadistic, demonic game that beast came up with to get us to let down our guard so it can eat us. It probably even bewitched the brat into helping.”
“Do you think I haven’t thought of that? But what choice do we have? Erik, we grow weaker by the day. We need food, and water if we are even to survive a few more days. I’m even sure that Fred hasn’t even that much time left. He needs medical help… Skif’s right; we can’t fight that thing. Our weapons were useless against it—not one of them drew blood. Look, if we run that thing will surely eat us, but we might have a chance to escape the beast later if we play its game now. It may eventually let its guard down… or something.”
“Marcus, you are not honestly going to go along with this, are you?”
“Erik, Thomas is right: we’re out of options, mate. It is this or starve to death slowly. And Fred needs help badly.”
“You are both insane. Absolutely insane!” Erik yelled at them. “That Thing will eat you for sure.”
“It hasn’t eaten the brat yet.” Marcus pointed out but continued in a whisper that Kieran was sure Skif’s ears would miss. But not Kieran’s. “The beast even gave him clothes, he might just be as smart as Skif’s making him out to be. In which case we don’t stand a chance. We will need time to plan an escape and the energy to accomplish it.”
“Fine. I hope he eats you cowards first.” The Annoying bastard finally relented.
“Skif? We will agree not to try to escape but we still need your oath.” Called The Knight named Thomas.
“Oh yes, Sir. I so swear to Ghaskia lord of thunder and truth, heavenly slayer of the oath breakers, that Llyr the dragon will not harm anyone….” At first Kieran’s boy was ecstatic and confident, but quickly melted into nervousness once again as he stared at Kieran. “As long as they do not try to escape or harm him.” He added, to which Kieran nodded in agreement.
“There, are you satisfied?” Sir Marcus asked.
“Not at all.” Erik replied bitterly. “But it appears I have been outvoted.”
There was some sound of movement from the hole and more pained grunts from the injured Knight as it sounded like they moved him farther back from the entrance.
“Okay Skif, tell your Damn pet… I mean the dragon we are ready.” Sir Thomas called out, his voice more muffled from the distance.
“Yes sirs, at once.” Skif answered obediently. He turned to Kieran and replied as if Kieran had not already heard both sides of the conversation, “They say they’re ready. They promised not to try to escape. Okay, Llyr?”
Nodding, Kieran reached up to move the rock. From beside him his future mate’s small voice rose to caress his ears, “Thank you, Llyr.”
Kieran sighed. ‘I just don’t get you, little mate. How can you take that abuse and still want to help them? You must have a heart bigger than a full-grown dragon. I only hope someday you will have room for me in there.’ With little effort at all but with a heavy heart, Kieran moved the boulder aside.
