The Mess That I Am

Chapter-nine: The Mess That I Am

Previously on Some kind of Wonderful

Leila's eyes flashed, "Goddamn you Chase, what the hell do you want from me?"

Chase gazed into her eyes which were hot with anger. It seemed in that moment he had lost control of every fibre in his body, when he took a step forward, cupping her face with his large hands and pressing his mouth to hers possessively.

Leila froze when she felt Chase's lips on hers. It was a hard kiss but his lips felt so soft it made Leila want to melt into a puddle.

In the two seconds that their lips were locked, Leila's mind suddenly decided to kick start again. A hot surge of anger flushed through her veins, she placed her hands on his chest and shoved him away from her.

Two pairs of anger filled eyes glared at each other. Leila was panting half from the kiss and the other from rage. What she did next shocked her as well as Chase.

SMACK!!

Her hand stung from the impact behind the blow, but that was no comparison to the ache in her chest. She just slapped Chase...CHASE!

His brown eyes portrayed his wounded state when he finally looked at her, his cheek red showing her finger print. However, they both stood still for a moment, trying to come to terms with what just happened between them.

Tears sprung to her eyes, and she knew he saw it too because, he swallowed hard and fisted his hands as if trying to control himself.

With one last shared look Leila walked off, leaving him staring at the spot where she was just standing.

(Nickelback, Far away, plays loudly from Leila's bedroom.)

That night was the first time in a long while that it rained in California. The rain fell hard, pounding on the ground with a force like it wanted to flood it entirely.

Dayne and Jaiden sat in Jaiden's bedroom in silence listening to the same song play over and over again. It's been an hour since Chase left and since then Leila locked herself in the bedroom.

"This is bad." Dayne said with a sigh.

"I know, they fight all the time but never like this." Jaiden said with a frown. "Did you see the way Chase drove off, I thought he was gonna rip straight through the gate." Dayne nodded.

"This is so fucked up man, she can’t marry that asshole. Not when she doesn't love him." Dayne told Jaiden with a shake of his head.

Jaiden frowned. "What do you mean, how can you be sure she doesn’t love him?" he asked.

Dayne looked at his younger brother like he was the biggest idiot in the world. "Jai don’t be an idiot, she's locked herself in her room listening to her and Chase's song over and over again. She seems to be more broken over Chase than overjoyed by being engaged to Adrian. Who I don’t trust one little bit might I add."

"You can’t know that for sure, Dayne. It's always been the two of them against the world. She's bound to be cut up about the ending of their friendship."

Dayne shook his head. "Jaiden have you paid any attention to the song that’s been playing for the past hour? Listen to the damn lyrics. Does that sound like just friendship to you?"

I love you, and I loved you all along, stop breathing if I don't see you anymore.

"Wow." Jaiden mumbled after a moment. "How the fuck did I miss that?"

"No idea, now let's go and make sure she's okay." Dayne said getting to his feet, Jaiden followed suit until they both stood in front of Leila's door.

Dayne reached out, turning the door knob slowly. The door opened, both brothers entered to find Leila curled up on her bed in a foetal position.

Her whole body shook with hoarse sobs. She had no idea Jaiden and Dayne was standing in her doorway. Jaiden looked at Dayne who was watching Leila with concerned eyes.

He nodded his head, making his way to the bed, to his broken sister. Daye sat on one side of the bed, Jaiden sat on the other.

Leila looked up and her swollen blue eyes met Dayne's concern filled ones. He reached out and stroked her hair delicately pulling it out of her eyes. Jaiden put his hand on her shoulder squeezing it reassuringly.

Leila cried more when she felt Jaiden lie down beside her, holding her from behind. She raised herself up allowing Dayne to wrap his arms around her protectively. She dropped her head on his chest and cried harder.

Dayne and Jaiden weren’t used to comforting Leila. That was usually Chase's job. Both boys were unsure of what to do, what to say and how to act around her. So instead they opted for silence and just held her while she sobbed.

***

Isabelle and Jordan stood outside Leila's door. She pushed the door open and saw her three kids on Leila's bed. Dayne was laying down holding Leila to his chest, while Jaiden lay down besides her cradling her from behind.

Isabelle's eyes filled with teas as she watched her daughter crying. All the past memories came rushing back to her, the times she broke down crying for Jordan.

"Why are you crying?" Jordan asked his wife quietly.

Isabelle shook her head, "It's just the situation brings back memories. That was me twenty years ago, crying in her arms for losing you."

Jordan wrapped his arms around her, he kissed her temple. "Something's not right, Jordan." she said never taking her eyes of Leila.

"What do you mean; you don’t think she's pregnant do you?"

Isabelle sighed. "I don’t know, maybe you should..." she said looking up at her husband. Jordan nodded and let go of his wife before stepping into his daughter's room.

Dayne and Jaiden looked up when they saw their father standing in the doorway. He indicated with his head for them to leave the room.
The boys quickly obeyed and left the room after one last look at their sister.

Jordan took a deep breath before closing the door and moving over to his daughter. Turning down the music a little he sat at the edge of her bed reaching to run his fingers through her silky brown hair.

Leila looked up and sniffled when she saw her fathers concern filled eyes peering down at her.

"Princess, what's going on?" He asked gazing into her blue eyes which looked almost identical to Isabelle's.

Leila hiccupped and shook her head. "Nothing daddy, I'm fine." She mumbled her voice weak and shaky.

"Really, because, you don't seem fine?" he said pulling her hair back. "You know you can talk to me, always?"

Leila nodded.

"Leila, I'm going to ask you something, and I accept any answer you give me without question. I know you won't lie to me." Leila nodded again.

"Are you pregnant?" Leila's eyes snapped up to her fathers in surprise.

"What, why doe's everybody keep asking me that. No, I'm not pregnant." She said irritated.

"I'm sorry sweetheart, but you suddenly getting engaged without telling us you were even dating someone kind of baffled us all. It was really out of character, you know?" He explained and Leila blinked.

"I know, I'm sorry, daddy."

Jordan sighed. "Honey, forgive me if I'm wrong but, you don’t look like a girl who just got engaged to the man she's in love with?" he stated.

Leila remained silent.

Jordan regarded her with curiosity. "Are you being pressured into this becaus-"

"-NO...god daddy, I'm not being pressured into anything. A-Adrian really cares about me, and always puts my feelings first. He's sensitive and isn't afraid showing his affection." She explained her eyes downcast. "He's true to me." she mumbled.

"Then why the tears...?"

"I just had an argument with Chase; we said some horrible things to each other. A-And I-I r-really think that I l-lost h-him." she hiccupped.

Jordan's brows rose. "Baby, you and Chase always fight, why is this time any different?"

"B-because, this was b-bad, I-I hit him." she said ashamed.

Jordan arched a brow. "You hit Chase?" he asked surprised. She nodded.

"He think's I'm making a mistake."

"And what did you tell him?"

She shrugged. Jordan sighed. It was so obvious what was going on between Chase and Leila. Jordan had sussed out all the signs that Chase was in-love with his daughter back when they were teenagers.

That kid sure knew how to hide his feelings. Jordan smiled at that. He saw a lot of himself in Chase, back when he was secretly in love with Isabelle.

He cleared his throat, "Leila, I want you to really listen and take into account what I'm about to say, okay?" Leila nodded.

"Marriage isn't a joke. I jumped into a loveless marriage with Kat to block out the feelings I still harboured for your mother. But even after five years of not seeing her or knowing where she was, it didn’t stop me from loving her deeply." He explained taking her hands into his.

Leila listened to her fathers words carefully. "I was miserable, I thought maybe if I married Kat I would start to love her and forget about the feeling I had for your mom. But I never did, she was always there. She was always on my mind, the last thing I thought about when I went to bed and the first when I woke up." Leila's eyes filled with tears.

Jordan wiped her tears away delicately. "My point is Leila, don't try and run away from the truth. Because, trust me, you can't. It will be on your mind day after day, night after night taunting you."

"Baby, don’t make the same mistake I did. Don’t ruin your life. If you love Adrian then go for it. But if you don’t end it soon, before it all gets worse." Jordan explained and kissed her knuckles.

"Thanks daddy." Leila said throwing herself into his arms like she did when she was a kid.

****

A few days later the dilemma in the Callaway household seem to die down somewhat.

Leila was still upset over the sudden end of friendship with Chase but the tears seem to have stopped, which was a good thing.

Jaiden and Dayne went over to check up on Chase. The boys were shocked to find Chase in the state he was in. His hair was a mess, he had stubble from lack of shaving and his eyes were bloodshot.

"Whoa," Jaiden said eyeing his friend with concern.

"Chase, when was the last time you left this house, or bathed?" he asked with a frown as he looked at the state of the apartment.

Chase slammed the door shut in silence, dragging his feet he moved to the living room.

Dayne and Jaiden followed him. The living room was scattered with empty bottles and cans of beer.

"How is she?" he asked after a moment of silence. He couldn’t seem to life his eyes to meet theirs.

Dayne cleared his throat. "Well, she was crying for the past two days. But now she's just walking around with a permanent frown." Chase shook his head as he took another gulp of his beer.

"Chase, how long are you both going to keep this up? Jesus, you're both miserable without each other. Hiding and avoiding each other isn’t going to help." Dayne said.

"You think I don’t know that? You think I haven’t picked up this damn phone and tried to call her? I just can’t." He said his voice dripping with defeat.

"So, you’re just giving up?" Jaiden questioned.

Chase looked up his eyes a blaze. "What the hell am I supposed to do, Jaiden?"

"Chase this is you and Leila were talking about, you guys have been through deeper shit than this. You gotta fight to keep your friendship man, if you don’t you're gonna lose her forever, is that what you want?" Chase shook his head.

He knew he couldn’t survive without Leila in his life. He needed her like an addict needed his drugs. Even if his love for her was unrequited, he nevertheless needed her in his life at least as a friend.

He was going to win her back, whatever it took to have her back in his life.

****

"Yo, J...?" Dayne's voice echoed in Jaiden's room making him jump.

"Fuck..." Jaiden mumbled dropping the playboy he was reading startled. Dayne's chuckles could be heard over the intercom in his room.

He leaned over and pushed a button to answer him. "What the fuck man?"

"Are you reading that playboy again?" Dayne asked amused. "Did I interrupt something?" he chuckled.

Jaiden rolled his eyes.

"No, I was just killing my boredom, fuck I thought you were mom." Jaiden said eyeing the blonde on the cover with lust filled eyes. Damn she was hot!

Dayne laughed. "Dude you suck. She's so going to catch you one day."

"Kiss my ass."

"No can do lil bro. I'll be more than happy to kick it though." Dayne shot back.

Jaiden shook his head. "You can try, you will not succeed but you definitely can try." Jaiden mocked.

"You're lucky I'm feeling lazy or I would come in there and smack you using your own hand you bitch." Jaiden laughed.

"Whatever bro, what the fuck do you want anyway?"

"I'm bored." Dayne mumbled.

"And that’s my problem how...?"

"Let's go out."

"Where the fuck you wanna go?" Jaiden asked rubbing his eyes.

Dayne sighed. "I don't know. I was talking with Eyvah earlier and she told me she hasn’t been out clubbing in a long time."

Jaiden smirked "You wanna take your chick clubbing?"

"She's not my chick, we're just friends." Dayne said flatly.

"Right," Jaiden said stretching the word. "Sure man, I'm down with that. Where to, club 401?" Jaiden asked.

"Whatever. Just get us on the list, I'll call her now." Dayne said and clicked off the intercom.

Later that evening the boys and Eyvah walked into the club which was bouncing. The latest hip hop music was playing while couples were bumping and grinding on the dance floor.

Eyvah looked around the club with wide eyes. She had been to clubs before but not A-class and certainly not as V.I.P. It was amazing the power the two Callaway boys had and how well known they were.

They settled into a booth, almost instantly bottles of the most expensive champagne were settled on the table along with girls swarming around the guys.

Jaiden grinned as a girl settled herself into his lap, making gooey eyes at him while pressing her fake D-cup chest into him.

Dayne just downed his beer and searched the club, his blue eyes darting around from face to face. A red head that had been sitting next to him kept trying to get his attention but he continued to ignore her attempts.

Eyvah was swaying in her seat to the beat of the music. Occasionally her eyes would get a glimpse of Jaiden and his bimbo who was now openly grinding into his leg.

She scowled downing another glass of champagne, the liquid burning her insides on the way down.

She looked down when she felt something soft and warm brush up against her fingers. Her brown eyes flickered up meeting with a pair of piercing blue ones.

Dayne smiled at her softly, he just about opened his mouth to say something when Jaiden interrupted by calling his name. Dayne looked at his brother with a frown.

"Yo D, Fate at ten o'clock," Jaiden said his eyes darting over the dance floor.

Dayne's eyes followed his brother and suddenly his soft blue eyes darkened. Eyvah looked to where Dayne was scowling at and found he was looking at a very petite brunette who in return was looking straight back at him.

"Excuse me." Dayne said moving from beside Eyvah and walking towards the brunette.

The two began talking seriously for a few minutes until the brunette smiled seductively up at Dayne who shook his head and looked away from her.

The brunette stood up on her tippy toes and turned his face to look at her. She looked into his eyes deeply and said something to him with a serious expression on her face before smiling sweetly.

Dayne seemed to ponder over what she said before nodding. The girl beamed at him and dragged him to the dance floor with her.

Eyvah was beyond confused.

"Hey." She looked back and saw Jaiden grinning devilishly at her.

"Hi." She smiled looking around to see all the girls from before were discarded.

"Um, who was that girl?" she asked curiously.

Jaiden looked over at his brother for a second smiling. "That's Fate Cunningham." Jaiden told her, she nodded.

"She and Dayne had a thing going for a while. But one day she just up and left. And well...I guess now she's back."

"He didn’t seem too happy to see her...at first." Eyvah questioned.

Jaiden regarded the couple for a moment before speaking. "Yeah, they had a few problems in the past. We probably won’t see him anymore tonight." Jaiden laughed. "When Fate's around, Dayne seems to loose sight of everything around him."

Eyvah watched Dayne and Fate dancing extremely closely together. "Wow, they can sure move." She said wrinkling her nose in distaste. Jaiden laughed.

"Oh, babe, that’s just them, warming up. What wrong, jealous?"

Eyvah looked at Jaiden like he had grown two heads. "No, why would I be jealous. I think they look pretty good together." she admitted.

Jaiden grinned. "Well, come on then, it looks like it's just you and me tonight." Jaiden said taking her hand and pulling her to the dance floor with him. "If you can't beat 'em, you join 'em."

"Jaiden, I'm not sure this is a good idea." She told him nervously.

"Why can’t you dance?" Jaiden asked with raised brows.

She blushed. "Yeah I can dance but, not like that." She said gesturing to Dayne and Fate who were getting all hot and heavy on the dance floor.

Jaiden placed his hands on her petite waist and drew her closer to him. Eyvah's heart began pounding in her chest. "You'll be fine. Just let my body guide you. Stay relaxed and don’t tense up." He said softly in her ear.

Eyvah felt her head spin as she was pressed into his chest. Eyvah thanked the gods when Ray Ray's Hip Roll began tearing through the speakers.

Their rhythm was slow as the song began; soon Eyvah lost herself completely in the music and the feeling of his arms around her. They began moving in sync; things grew heated almost instantly as she began grinding into him.

Damn the boy could move. She was sweating from the heat between them. A series of hoots and catcalls erupted from the people around them. Eyvah looked around the room to see her, Jaiden, Dayne and fate were the only two on the dance floor with people watching and cheering for them.

Jaiden's fingers tightened around her hips causing her eyes to snap back up at him. "Forget them, just focus on me," he said guiding her body with his own sensually.

Five or six more songs later Eyvah was thirsty and her feet were killing her. As much as she enjoyed dancing with Jaiden and being in his arms she couldn’t stand the pain of her feet.

Dayne had disappeared a while back just like Jaiden had said, which had left her alone with Jaiden, not that she minded of course.

"So you have fun?" Jaiden asked as they walked out of the noisy club. The cool air felt like heaven after being all hot and sticky for the past few hours.

"Yeah, I really did. I have never really been to a club like this before. Usually the clubs I went to were full of sleaze bags and druggies." She informed him as they walked over to the car.

"Well you gotta be a member to get into this place. They don’t allow just any Tom, Dick and Harry to walk in, especially if the place has Celebrities." Eyvah laughed

"So it seems you and Dayne switched roles tonight." She said looking up at him. Jaiden looked surprised with the sudden change of topic.

"Meaning...?" he asked.

"More often than not you're the one to hook up and disappear, right?"

Jaiden looked at her blankly for a moment. He licked his lips and shook his head. "This may come as a shock to you, but I don’t sleep with everything on two legs." He told her flatly.

"I don’t use girls and disregard their feelings. They know exactly what they're going to get when they leave with me. I don't feed them a whole load of bullshit to get them into my bed. They come to me willingly, so I just give them what they want." He explained his voice void of any emotion.

"So it's just meaningless sex. You've never felt anything for these girls?" Jaiden shook his head.

"Nope, the girls I date and the girls I screw around with are widely divergent."

Eyvah's brows shot up at that. "So, you don’t date brainless bimbos?"

"What is this, twenty questions?" Jaiden asked as they settled into his car.

Eyvah shrugged.

"Just curious," She shrugged.

"Well didn’t you know that curiosity killed the cat?" he asked glancing at her. "There is nothing wrong with having a healthy sexual appetite." He reasoned "I'm only eighteen; I'm not really looking into marrying and settling down right now."

Eyvah nodded silently. "What?" Jaiden questioned the look on her face.

She shrugged. "Nothing, it's just, don't you ever get tired of bed hopping?"

Jaiden laughed. "Bed hopping? God, Eyvah, you make me sound like a sex-a-holic or something," Eyvah looked up at him blankly.

"Hey, I'm just going by what I hear and read." She told him with a shrug.

"You shouldn't believe everything you read in magazines. They only write what the readers want to read. Just because I leave a club with a girl doesn't automatically mean I'm hooking up with her."

Eyvah was about to reply but got interrupted.

"There he is!" A voice called out from behind the two.

"Fuck." Jaiden muttered when he saw the group of people with cameras running towards them. "Think you can run?" he asked looking down at Eyvah who looked shocked.

"Wh-what?" she sputtered her brown eyes wide. Jaiden didn’t answer instead he looked back at the paparazzi who were getting closer and back at Eyvah.

"Come on." He said grabbing a hold of her hand, pulling her along with him as they broke into a run.

"They're getting away!" someone barked from behind them.

Eyvah laughed as Jaiden hurriedly pulled her along with him, they rounded a corner ending up in a dark alley. Jaiden quickly pulled Eyvah and pressed her into a wall.

Eyvah gasped softly when her bare back pressed against the cold wall. Her cheeks burned red at the feeling of Jaiden's hard chest pressed up against hers.

The paparazzi rushed straight past them in a hurry to catch them. Jaiden grinned and turned to look at the brunette he was pressed up against. Her chocolate brown eyes seemed to be lighter and twinkling under the florescent moonlight.

Eyvah swallowed hard desperately wishing her heart would stop beating so fast. She was sure Jaiden could feel it and that thought only embarrassed her more. Was he going to kiss her?

His eyes were a startling blue, so clear yet astoundingly piercing at the same time. For a few seconds Eyvah forgot to breathe as they look intently into each others eyes. Their lips were only a breath apart.

"Um, I think we lost them." Jaiden said suddenly moving away from Eyvah like the idea of touching her disgusted him.

That hurt. The guy you like looking at you like you packed all the diseases under the sun. What was his problem?

"Y-yeah looks that way." She mumbled still a little baffled by his actions.

Jaiden cleared his throat uncomfortably. "I'll take you home." he said turning and walking off.

Eyvah followed after him, pushing aside the disappointment she felt at that moment.

****

The next morning came quickly; Jaiden strolled in at 4am after dropping off Eyvah. The car ride home was silent. Jaiden went over and over the situation in his mind, was he really tempted to kiss Eyvah when he knows Dayne has a thing for her.

"Morning, Callaway's." Jordan said brightly when he walked into the kitchen.

Jaiden and Isabelle were the only ones in the kitchen until Dayne walked in looking exhausted.

"Whoa, someone had a long night?" Jaiden questioned his brother with a knowing smirk.

Dayne shot his brother a death glare as he dropped onto the table. "Dayne don't sleep on the table please." Isabelle scolded her son pointing a ladle at him.

Dayne groaned sitting up straight. "Thanks for ditching us last night bro. Way to show Eyvah a good time." Jaiden said with a mouthful of cereal.

Jordan threw a table cloth at his son. "Boy, close you mouth when you chew." He told him with a frown. Jaiden grinned sheepishly.

"Oh shit, Eyvah." Dayne groaned rubbing his face tiredly. "I can't believe I just ditched her like that, was she mad?" he asked worriedly.

Jaiden shook his head. "Nah man, she had a pretty good time. She wasn't mad at all; after you disappeared with Fate I stepped in and showed her a reeeaaal good time." Jaiden teased.

Dayne arched a brow. "Jaiden tell me you didn't try anything with her?"

Jaiden's spoon stopped in mid air while Dayne stared at him menacingly. "Dude, what the hell do you take me for?" he asked with a frown. "I think I can get a girl without having second dibs on my brother's crush."

"She's not my crush, we're just friends." Dayne said defensively.

"Yeah right, although I must say, you discarded her quick enough when you saw Fate." Jaiden said with a smirk. "I'm guessing that’s who you were with until now?"

"Wait, Fates back?" Jordan questioned his son. Dayne nodded.

"Dayne you didn't..." Isabelle asked leaving her son to fill in the blanks.

Dayne shook his head. "No mom, I didn’t sleep with her. We just talked that’s all." Isabelle nodded.

"Oh please, you guys were getting pretty hot and heavy on the dance floor last night." Jaiden pointed out.

"We didn’t have sex, we had a lot of unresolved issues to deal with, a lot to figure out." Dayne told his family with a sigh.

Jaiden regarded his brother sceptically. He knew Dayne and there was no way in hell all he and Fate did was 'talk'.

"Who didn’t have sex?" Leila's voice interrupted the conversation as she strolled in to the kitchen.

"Dayne and Fate," Jaiden said smugly then frowned. "Hang on, where the hell have you been?"
Leila's brows shot up. "Fate...as in Fate Cunningham, the Fate who Dayne-"

"-Yes Leila, 'The' Fate," Dayne said through his gritted teeth.

Leila's lips formed into a surprised 'o' "And where have you been, young lady. You haven’t been home in three days?" Jordan questioned her.

Leila sighed. "Yeah, I was staying over at Adrian's apartment. He wanted me to meet a few of his friends." Leila explained chewing on her breakfast gingerly.

The doorbell rang. "Were we expecting someone?" Jordan asked looking around the table.

Everyone shook their heads.

A few moments later the maid walked into the kitchen followed by two suited men. "Sir, these two gentlemen would like to speak you." the maid said and left the kitchen

Everyone's eyes fell on the two suited men standing in the kitchen. "Afternoon, I'm detective Truman, sorry to interrupt but we need to speak to a Mr. Jaiden Callaway." the detective said his eyes scanning every face.

Jaiden held up is hand and swallowed the breakfast he was eating. "That's me, is something wrong?" he asked with worry.

Two uniformed police officers walked straight past the detective and moved to Jaiden's side.

They pulled him up to his feet placing handcuffs on his wrists "Jaiden Callaway, I'm arresting you on suspicion of rape..."
