Final Goodbye's
I apologize for the late upload of this chapter. I planned to do this, this morning but I got a call around 4am that my father had had a minor heart attack and had to have emergency surgery. I rushed to see him and had spent 16 hours with him in the hospital. They had cleared a major artery in his heart and were keeping him heavily sedated so he could rest. I'm glad to say he woke up after a few hours and was talking and complaining that he was hungry. He's fine and they plan to release him in a few days.

*A year and a half later…
The dogwood trees were all in bloom on the school campus as the graduating class congratulated each other on their success. Lukas hugged a crying Angie as she folded her cap and gown.
“I’m really going to miss this place.”
Lukas nodded in agreement as he stared longingly back at his school. After Alex had gone to the hospital things had changed for him. No one tormented him; no one bothered him or called him names. He had even managed to make a few friends.
“Luke.”
He turned to smile at Mr. Gordon who shook his hand firmly.
“I’m so proud of you. If you ever think of going into education give me a call, there will always be a place for you here.”
Lukas smiled back tears as he pulled the man into an embrace.
“Things have been so hard, but you’ll always be a father to me…a friend.”
Angie started balling all over again.
“Luke! You’re so sentimental, and you’ve changed so much this year.”
Mr. Gordon released him as his eyes found the old willow tree; the one Alex had found him at the first time he had ran from him.
“I wish Alex could have been here for this.”
“Did someone say my name?”
A smile pulled at Lukas’ lips as he turned to find his lover, he had graduated a year before him, and the separation had been a trial for them both.
“You are such a liar.”
Alex embraced him as Lukas’ kissed his lips chastely, no longer blushing at the display of public affection.
“I thought you said you couldn’t make it.”
The older boy shrugged, his trademark grin on his lips.
“I pulled a few strings and got out of work early.”
Mr. Gordon clasped his shoulder, a soft smile on his lips.
“Take care of him.”
Alex nodded to the man, his arm about Lukas’ shoulders.
“I always do sir.”
Lukas freed himself to put his cap and gown on the seat of Alex’s pick up. It wasn’t anything special but it was going to take them to where they wanted to go.
“Are you ready to go Luke?”
He ducked out of the truck to give his final farewells.
“I’m really going to miss you guys.”
Alex clasped his shoulder, a grip of confidence.
“We’ll call you when we get there.”
They climbed into the truck and started on their way, only two suitcases in the back and a bed. They rode silently until they hit the highway leaving their old town.
“You never told me where we were going.”
Alex smiled, his arm resting on the back of the seat as he drove. The windows were down and blowing about the boy’s hair. Lukas unbuttoned his dress shirt a little, giving him a more of a rugged look.
“Well, my family left me some land down south.”
Lukas raised his eyebrow.
“Some land?”
“Yeah around a hundred acres I think.”
The younger boy smiled as he dangled his hand out the window.
“It’s in Texas, so I figure we can farm some cattle maybe…do you know how to ride a horse?”
Lukas gave him a ‘you’ve got to be kidding’ look that made Alex laugh.
“I guess I’ll have to teach you.”
Lukas smiled out the window; it was getting hotter and the sun shown down on them mercilessly. But it looked good shining through his hair and on his skin. Alex smiled softly at him as he captured his hand in his, resting on top of Lukas’ cap and gown. Lukas met his gaze, a bit of insecurity in his eyes.
“Are we going to be alright?”
Alex pulled his hand up and kissed him lightly, never breaking his gaze from Lukas’.
“We’re going to be just fine.”
