To the people who reviewed. Sorry still no Jay, but don't worry he'll show up in the next chapter, for now you have to deal with Shawn going out with Mike.
Thanks for the reviews: Minding, Rekkie, and Sekre.
"Now Shawn! You know how your father and I feel about that kind of language!" She chided completely glossing over his potentially ended friendship.
"Sorry..." Shawn rolled his eyes. "Now what do you want?"
“Mike is in town, maybe you’d show him around?” His mom asked hopefully.
“Mom… tonight isn’t a good night.” Shawn hedged, the last thing he wanted to do tonight was go out and pretend to be happy.
“Don’t be silly! You’ll be fine!” She pooh poohed. “Besides your father and I have plans… You’ll bring him to church tomorrow too! Everyone wants to see him.”
“Mom! I don’t feel like going out right now!” Shawn protested. Why didn’t mother’s get it through their heads that their son’s grew up and moved the hell out so they can have their own lives?
“He’s on his way... it’s simply too late.” His mother announced as if that was the end of that. “Have fun dear… we’ll see you tomorrow!”
CLICK!
“MOM! No! I can’t do it!” Shawn glared at the handset as the line clicked dead. “God dammit!” Shawn tried to call Jay again, and got the answering machine. “Jay… please call me back…” Shawn was putting the phone down when the doorbell rang. “Aww shit…He’s here.”
Shawn stalked into the living room and plastered a fake smile on his face then jerked the door open.
“Hi Mike…”
“SHAWNNIE!!!” Mike scooped Shawn up in his arms and carried into the living room before he put him down again. “You ready to go? I’m starved, they didn’t feed us on the plane.”
“Yeah… gimme a few minutes.” Despite his bad mood, Shawn found himself smiling ruefully. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad… they’d always had fun when they went out before, why should it change now? Besides it wasn’t like he really had plans.
“I know just the place.” Within a few minutes they were in their car and headed to “The Golden Rose” a restaurant he and Jay often went to. The drive over was relatively quiet and Mike knew him too well not to notice.
“Hey Shawn, man you know you can’t hide anything from me! So level up and tell me what’s wrong.” Mike broke the silence in a tone the brooked no argument.
“I’m sorta seeing someone is all.” Shawn sighed.
“Ok… so what’s wrong with that?” Mike said looking out the window at the passing scenery. “Last time I heard, that was something good.”
“Yeah, normally. I guess it is.” Shawn agreed. “But we sorta broke up tonight, at least I think we did. So no biggie… and no I don’t want to talk about it. How’s the pro’s treating you?”
“If it’s got you quiet then it’s a big deal…” Mike argued. “This person means a lot to you, then?”
“Yeah...” Shawn flicked a glance at Mike. “And I meant it when I said I didn’t want to talk about it, not yet.”
“Then the pro’s are good! I’m having alotta fun… tackling guys and making em make funny noises when I squish the air out of their lungs.” Mike smiled widely looking very boyish in his enthusiasm. “And Hey!! They PAY me to do it; so I can’t complain.”
“Well, sounds like you’re having fun!” Shawn laughed. They arrived at the restaurant and went in, it was a Saturday night and the place was a little crowded, so they had to wait for a table. Everywhere Shawn looked there was a reminder of Jay, it seemed like every booth held some special memory or another.
“Anytime you want to talk about it…” Mike said softly putting his arm around Shawn’s shoulders. “Let me know.”
Thankfully the waiter showed up to take them to their seats before Shawn embarrassed himself by crying. Once at the booth, they sat across from each other, and ordered drinks Shawn looked up to see Mike watching him with an expectant gleam in his eye.
“So…” Mike prompted. “What happened?”
“Mike…” Shawn began to hedge. “Oh fuck it! Either you’ll help me with this or you’ll leave me alone for the rest of the night. And I can drown my sorrows in as much alcohol as I want. I’m gay, Mike.”
“So…” Mike said nonchalantly.
“Didn’t you hear me?” Shawn asked incredulously. “I said I am gay! You’re the only person I’ve told, and you sit there like… like I told you that it was raining outside. You’re in the NFL for god’s sake, a football jock! Shouldn’t you be pounding the crap out of me right now?”
“I heard you, the first time.” Mike said and took a drink from his glass. “Not all jocks beat the shit outta gay guys.” He winked before continuing. “Especially when they’re as big as me, besides my boyfriend doesn't like being hit... not like that anyway.”
“What? You?! No way! Are you shitting me?” Shawn exclaimed. “Man I have to tell you I never got that from you… Do your parents know? Never mind they couldn’t… or then my parents would know and they’d NEVER have me take you out on the town! Hell, I wouldn’t even be allowed to talk to you! So you know where I stand on that front.”
“Yeah… I’ve been with Barry for, almost three years.” Mike grinned.
“Wow! Three years!” Shawn asked mischievously. “What’s he think about you being in the locker room with all those other men?”
“He’s there with me… so I’m kept in line.” Mike laughed at Shawn’s wide-eyed expression.
“Get the hell outta here!” The original topic of Jay had been forgotten at the moment. “Holy shit! What do the other players think?”
“Some know… some don’t and some know when to keep their mouths shut.” Mike explained with a definite steel edge to his voice. “And some don’t want to admit they were flattened by a “fairy”; it all works out.”
“Wow man… that’s amazing. I’d have never guessed!” Shawn was still getting over his surprise.
“You’re stalling…”
“Yeah, I know.” Shawn blushed, then took a deep breath. “I told him I loved him today.”
“And?”
“And it was at… THAT moment…” Shawn glanced away uncomfortably but not before he saw Mike grimace painfully. “Yeah.. I know! So anyway, it wasn’t exactly planned, and I didn’t know how he felt about it. So I said a bunch of stupid shit to cover up… and… and he left. Now he won’t return my calls… and I feel like an asshole.”
“Well, yeah! Cause you should!” Mike said.
“Gee thanks!” Shawn grumbled. “So why aren’t you with Barry? Since he’s so wonderful and all?”
“I wanted to see you…” Mike said simply.
