Chapter Twenty

Garret got out taking the squirming puppy. Rowan hopped out and he handed it to her. Once the pup was in her arms the small creature immediately relaxed. “I’m offended.”

“You scare him,” she confessed.

“Now I’m really offended.”

“His name is-” she touched the puppy’s mind again. “Lycan.”

“Cute,” Garret drawled. We walked in.

“Late again,” Cat scolded. “C’mon, we need to get on stage now.” Rowan thrust the puppy into Garret’s arms and joined the others on stage. ““Moth to the Flame” on three. One... two...” Rowan smiled and stepped up to the microphone closing her eyes singing her heart out.

“All you have to do is smile
And my resolve is gone
I can’t fight you any longer
Like the moth to the flame

I’ve tried fighting it for so long
I don’t even know why
But now I’ve given up and I’m yours
Like the moth to the flame

Like the moth to the flame
You draw me into your darkness
Like the moth to the flame
You tempt me to surrender to you

I tried to pretend that you meant nothing to me
I tried to remain calm at your touch
Now I’m weak and I can’t pretend
Like the moth to the flame

The fire and ice in your kiss
The way your touch sends me flying
Baby I want you
Like the moth to the flame

Like the moth to the flame
You draw me into your darkness
Like the moth to the flame
You tempt me to surrender to you
…Like the moth to the flame…”

“I’m sure you’ve all noticed the absence of one of our people,” Cat said. “Lupe has been kidnapped. If anyone here has any information on where she is or who has her please come to one of us. Thank you.” By the time that they made it out to the club Garret was holding the puppy by the scruff of his neck to avoid getting bit.

“Awwe!” Kalena gushed rushing forward. She took the puppy from Garret. “Be nice, leech.”

“Bite me, blood bag.”

“Guys,” Rowan snapped.

“Yes, m’luv?” he asked smoothly.

“Just stop it.”

“No,” Kalena said cuddling Lycan. “I can’t kill you but that doesn’t mean I have to be nice. Especially to him.” Garret stuck his tongue out at her.

“C’mon, Mr. Maturity.” Rowan led Garret to a table. The others followed, sitting with us or pulling up chairs. Garret and Rowan told them their findings.

“So you’re our only witness,” Kalena said looking down at Lycan who licked her cheek.

“Our only witness can’t talk and only saw shoes,” Garret sighed. “Very reliable.”

“Is that Jesse?” Nova asked. “And that’s... oh boy.”

“The girl from the campus store?” Rowan asked mildly.

“The girl from the campus store,” Nova confirmed.

“Her name’s Sarah,” Cherish said. “They’ve been dating for a month.”

“Garret and I have only been together for two weeks,” Rowan pointed out. “Which means-”

“Rowan?” Garret asked his dark eyes catching hers. He looked concerned. She smiled up at him.

“It doesn’t matter, I was with you during half of that time.”

“With?” Cherish teased. “With how?” She might not have liked the way her friend had been sneaking around but Garret grew on a person. Plus, he made her friend happy.

“Get your mind out of the gutter,” Rowan said. “All we’ve ever done is kiss.”

“Don’t I know it?” Garret said with an overdramatic sigh.

She kicked him. “Idiot.”

“Ow! Damn it, Rae, that’s not how you play footsie.”

“You- I- keep that up and next time I’ll aim that kick higher,” she warned slapping his arm.

“I can’t argue with him but you can hurt him. That’s not fair.” Kalena pouted.

“See there’s a difference. In reality Rowan wants to put her hands in completely different places but, alas, she’s way too prudish to admit that, even to herself.”

“You die,” Rowan growled. Garret was out of his seat and standing behind it in seconds.

“Bring it on,” he smirked, his eyes twinkling. Maya and Nick got up allowing her out of her seat. “Now, angel, do you really want to fight me in front of all these people?”

“Yes,” she said. He grinned then, and rushed to her, so that she didn’t even see him move. “No fair!” she exclaimed as he pinned her arms at her sides.

“Yeah, well, life’s not fair,” he shrugged.

“Could you get any more cliché?” Jesse walked over with Sarah stopping any further fighting.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“Jesse, meet Garret,” Rowan said pulling her arms back and shoving him lightly. He raised one eyebrow not moving at all. “Jerk.”

“Rowan, this is Sarah,” Jesse said.

“Pleased to meet you,” Rowan said. The two girls smiled at each other, a trifle falsely. Rowan was happy that she was with Garret, even if he did drive her insane, she was even happy that Jesse had found someone, but that didn’t mean she had to play nice with Jesse’s new toy.

/That’s cold,/ Cherish sent to her.

/Stay out of my thoughts!/ Rowan snapped back.

“Dance with me?” Garret asked.

“I’m still mad at you,” Rowan reminded him even as she let him lead her onto the dance floor.

“No, you’re not,” he said, convinced.

“I’m not?”

“Nope.” He drew her into his arms. “You were embarrassed, I apologize for that.” A grin tugged at the edge of his lips. “I even half mean it.”

“Moron.”

“Oh, I feel the love.”

“This is a fast song.”

“Yes.”

“I told you, that I couldn’t dance.”

“I see you onstage, angel. It’s all about confidence. You don’t have any.”

“Have you ever tried to make a point without being insulting?”

“No, but I wasn’t tying to insult you, I’m just trying explain something. Don’t think about all these people, this is just about you and me.”

“I’m not worried about them,” she said rolling her eyes. “I’m worried about you. Missing a step, doing something stupid, stepping on your feet... disappointing you.”

He was obviously fighting off laughter. “Do you know how silly that sounds?”

“But-”

“Angel, shut up and dance with me.”
