CHAPTER 9
After what he had heard and seen the two previous days, Ray decided against accompanying his dad to the lake, even though he had always liked fishing. The time spent with his dad alone usually was never too bad. Of course, they had their ruffles and arguments, but in general, his dad was careful about not annoying him. Maybe Ray had now found the reason for it.
Still he was bound to stay home and not go to the training. Anyways, he and Brian had talked about that when they had been at Brian’s and so Ray was not that worried. That was not his problem. The actual trouble was his mom. As soon as dad was gone, she approached him and nonchalantly asked him about whether he had met some nice girls around yet, maybe some friends of Zach?
“There were some girls watching us training but we didn’t talk much.”
“Ah, I see,” She sounded disappointed.
“Hey, wait! What was that just now?” Ray asked her when she went to leave the kitchen.
“I don’t know. You had a… thoughtful air… to you when we had breakfast” Her grin clearly displayed that she knew what she was saying. Was he that obvious? She must have interpreted his shocked stare right, for she hastily added, “A mother feels that, you know? Your dad was completely unaware, you see?”
Ray frowned, not really convinced but then again… what did it matter? Let people think you found a nice girl if they wanted to.
“Yeah…, maybe.”
“Is everything alright?” Her blond locks were tied back in a bun, and for a second there was that strong and caring woman Ray used to know to be his mother.
“I mean… I know I haven’t asked you that very often the last time… the last months but…”
“It’s okay mom, thanks.”
“You can always talk to me, you know?”
“You don’t talk either, do you?” The question just came spluttering out of his mouth.
“About what?” she tried to smile.
“About what dad is doing to you, for example?”
He saw it! She went pale.
“What… what are you talking about?”
“I saw you yesterday. How he punched you square in the face for defending me.”
“Oh Ray. Don’t take that too seriously. I provoked him and you know how he can be sometimes.”
Her laughter did not reach her eyes. Then his mom walked away without another word. Ray got mad about that.
“Why don’t you tell me when he’s beating you? I can help!”
“It’s certainly not your business protecting your mom, Ray! I want you to stay out of this or rough times will be up for all of us!” She left.
“Damit!”
The rest of the day, he spent extraordinarily missing Brian. As he lay in bed, his mind was flooded with pictures of the blond and nothing could stop the ache for him. Why had he been acting so damn stupid on the night he had spent at Brian’s place? He could not leave this place now. Therefore, he had no chance to talk to Brian about everything. At least he had time to think about everything… The more he thought about his newly found love, the more he wanted to touch him.
~
The next day Ray had to visit the professor for mathematics, as his parents had decided. They told him how to get there and he took his bike. At first they had said to go there all together but Mischa was not overly interested and Ray neither. He really was controlling himself not to pick a fight with his dad every second. The man had already gotten suspicious anyway.
On his way, Ray’s mind was captivated with entirely different thoughts though. There still was that image of Brian wearing just his football shorts, in his mind. It had blown him away when the blond had taken off his top. Ray first did not dare to touch the soft skin anywhere except for face and arms until Brian removed his own tee as well, wrapped his arms around him and they stood there chest touching chest. Ray had carefully lifted his hands and hesitantly laid them on Brian’s back.
Suddenly the memories of the night he had spent an Brian’s came to his mind again.
~
Brian smiled up at the taller brunette and pulled his face down in a kiss. Ray had tried to focus on the soft lips touching his, but the feeling of the younger one’s skin on his own was just too captivating to think about anything else. That made him oblivious to Brian’s moving on from his mouth to his ears.
Ray started when he felt the warm breath against his neck. The next instant teeth started softly biting his earlobe.
“What-“
“Shhh…”
A hot shiver ran down Ray’s spine when Brian continued to nibble, suck and kiss.
“I love you Ray,” he breathed and then looked at the boy in question.
“I know.”
The brunette bent down and captured Brian’s lips in the most sensitive kiss he had ever given in his life. The blond suddenly got impatient. He opened his mouth and hungrily invited Ray’s tongue in. Their kisses were sensual at first, but became more and more lustful. Ray had to be careful not to stumble when Brian pulled him closer by placing his hands on the older one’s hips.
“Brian! What are you…“
He was silenced by a demanding mouth covering his.
“Hey Brian! Give me some time to breathe!”
“You’re so hot.”
That statement caught Ray by surprise. He wanted to accept his bisexuality… and he would not let any conservative education he had experienced keep him away from loving Brian.
“Hah!”
Brian freed him from his pants and caressed his lower back. Surprise left Ray no other choice but to give in and kiss his demanding lover again. Brian’s leg pushing between his thighs made him choke as a consequence of his simple action.
“Brian! Stop that!”
For a second Brian actually seemed to stop. “But you are aware of what we’re doing. Right Ray?”
“Uhm… huh?”
Brian sighed. “I want you, Ray. Physically. Now”
His straightforwardness sent a jolt of excitement through the older one’s body. Ray managed an embarrassed laugh. “Yeah, I can feel that.”
This was an odd conversation that he felt uncomfortable with having.
Brian stared Ray directly into the eyes and put every ounce of urge in the words he was able to bring up.
“You must know that this is no joke. I truly want you. I want you to take me, Ray! If you are not sure or having even the slightest doubts then tell me”
“You make it sound like an important operation that could kill you,” Ray pouted but mentally he endlessly repeated Brian’s words: I-want-you-to-take-me-I-want-you-to-take-me-I-want-you-to-take-me…
“In a way, you could say so. I don’t wanna force you into things, you know. But I’ve wanted this since almost immediately after we first met”
“I didn’t know…”
“That’s why I’m telling you. When you’re not sure it does neither of us any good.”
“But you…-“
“This is about us. Not me”
Ray sighed deeply. He slowly traced Brian’s collarbone with his left index finger and then put the hand on his shoulder. The first boy he was touching like this. It felt oddly pleasant and still… Why was it so hard for him to give in to it completely? Obviously, it was what his body needed too.
The main problem, which remained, was the fact that he lacked technique. He knew how to go on a girl or two girls at a time. His friends had envied him for the threesome and he had been the hero of the day. Now that he faced the one he really loved, he failed. He needed a lesson on how to fuck another man. The thought was almost funny. There was certain… equipment necessary for this, as far as his little knowledge about this question went.
“Ray?”
“I’m sorry, Brian. I really want but… I think I can’t. Not yet.”
“I see.” Brian now smiled again and lifted Ray’s chin to kiss him softly.
“I understand that. And I’m waiting. Only, if at the end of your holiday you haven’t given me at least a bit of you I will come and take it, you get me?”
“You talk about raping me?”
“Don’t joke about that, it’s a serious topic! But to answer your question, If there’s no other way I only doubt it’s rape if the victim wants and enjoys it, too”
“You think I want it?”
“You just told me.”
“Whoops. Yeah, you’re right.”
They had settled down in bed to sleep until Ray would have to go home but they could not. They kept talking for a long time.
“It’s curious. When I was with a girl I never hesitated to get down with her”
“Maybe it is because I’m a man. Some probably find it harder to try something new than others.”
Brian was sleepy and his eyes were closed while he was speaking.
“Maybe you’re right. Or maybe… I guess I just… want this to mean something.”
This casual comment of Ray made Brian’s heart stop beating for a second only to start again at an alarming speed. Mean something. He smiled and then seized his lover’s lips in an excruciatingly slow kiss. When Ray writhed to speed it up the blond boy mentally grinned.
‘Finally you know what it’s like to be left longing’, Brian thought. But he also was quite sure that this was the last slow kiss he would ever give. Ray was much better at keeping him at the long end.
Mean something…. Ray smiled. Of course, he had told girls he really loved them and their love would mean much to him and so on but this time it felt different. Almost like in one of these weird novels about love and romance and all that girly stuff. He supposed it was kind of his stuff now, too.
~
The professor Samuel Pawel Birnbom lived in a woody area of the town and was proud owner of one of the most elaborate villas around there. Ray was hesitant to ring the doorbell but was excused anyway, when an old friendly-looking man approached the gates. He appeared still in very good shape and Ray calmed down a little. He had expected an almost dead old man with walking stick and a stern look. Hopefully, the person really was the professor and not just some employee.
The man however opened the gate and asked Ray to enter. Then he took the boy’s hand in his. He had a firm handshake and Ray could not help the grin. There he went with his stereotype image of a professor for mathematics.
“Welcome, young man, to my place. I assume you are Ray Finnegan?”
Ray nodded and then threw a quick glance at the surroundings. How very awesome. One could barely see the main building, due to the wild and supposedly untouched nature around. Of course, the lawns had seen a mower a while ago, but apart from that, it seemed like the family just let nature do as it wanted. There were no artificially planted flowers or trimmed bushes and hedges. However, the place did not look neglected. A girl would have called it romantic. Ray chased away that thought.
“I am Samuel Birnbom, Professor of Mathematics, as your dad probably has told you. Speaking of him, how is he doing? And your wonderful mother?”
“Uhm… They’re fine, professor.”
The old man silently smiled and said, “You do not need to address me as professor, lad. Since for you I am not.”
“Alright, Sir”
“Stick to Samuel, if I may recommend. That is less formal. After all, I know your parents. I wonder why you and I have never had the pleasure to meet until now. So where were we? Ah, right. Your family. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen your parents for a long time. How old is your little sister now? Mischa, is it?”
“Yes. She’s seven now. And they are doing fine. They send their greetings and excuse themselves for not coming. My mom said that it would probably be more appropriate if I came alone. They would like to come over another time soon, if they may?”
“Sure, I think I will call tomorrow. Can you tell your mother that?”
“I will.”
“The garden has intrigued you, has it not?”
“Well… it’s nice.”
“Most sophisticated people who come here would not agree on that.”
“I wouldn’t describe myself as sophisticated,” Ray said inelegantly.
“If you say so, but, I can see you’re intelligent enough to perceive the beauty of untouched nature and that’s why I already like you.”
Well, that was straightforward.
“Thank you.”
Mister Birnbom carefully scrutinized the boy’s face and then a soft frown plastered over his features.
“What is on your mind, boy?”
Telling the old man about his problems was no option and so Ray just said: “Nothing, Sir.”
After a few minutes of admiring the gardens, they went inside and Ray was in awe of the second elaborate house he had seen these holidays. They went to the professor’s office and then they talked about Ray’s future and his talent for mathematics. Birnbom was positively surprised that the boy had discovered that ‘gift’, as he called it, so late.
Finally, Ray had to admit that it had not been such a bad idea to come here at all and he was shocked at how easily this topic could fascinate him. The suggestion of the professor to go to university and study math became more appealing every second and Ray was already sure he would do so. It was surprising for him, too, that all of this usually dull stuff (he had found the lesson much too simple and therefore had always been bored in school) could actually be so interesting. On the other hand, Mister Birnbom was a real good teacher.
Before lunch, they were finished and the professor gave Ray some magazines and a prospectus of the university where he taught before they went to the dining room to have lunch with Mrs. Birnbom.
Later they went outside again and the old man showed his visitor the backyard. They were simply walking around and Ray was given detailed explanations for every tree and flower around. The family really had an awesome place to live and if Ray’s mind had not been occupied by other things he would have found everything extremely interesting, even more since they had no nice parks in his small hometown. Where he came from everything was grey and dusty due to the huge industry nearby.
“Huh?”
Ray looked up at Mister Birnbom and blushed.
“Have you even been listening to a word I said?” The old man smiled to himself.
“Uhm yeah, you told me about your hyacinths and uhm…”
“Nah, those I finished talking about already. I was on the rose bushes of my wife now.”
“I’m sorry” Ray felt awkward about the man. He displayed an intelligence that normally fascinated you as long as you did not annoy him. But, when you did so, he would use his superiority against you, especially with irritating and provoking comments.
“So what is it that you consider fairly more interesting than the flower garden of an old man?”
“I’m really sorry Sir. It was very rude of me.”
“I am not trying to make you feel bad over this. I know now you are predestined for studying mathematics and I know you’re interested and that was all your parents wanted. That means we can now have a conversation about other things. But, that requires interest from both of us. So what would you prefer to talk about?”
He was not such a bad man after all.
Ray noticed he indeed liked him but he did not want to talk. At that moment, the boy did not care about rose bushes nor anything else. After finishing the obligatory part about the interview, he had not been able to push back the thoughts of Brian any longer. Now the blond was constantly wandering into his mind.
“Nothing…. Rose bushes are okay,” He tried a weak smile.
“Okay, boy. I am no nosy person but I can see that a certain someone is occupying your thoughts and keeping you from paying the essential part of your attention to my remarks about gardening.”
He correctly interpreted Ray’s surprised face and said, “I’ve liked a lot of persons in my life, so did the people surrounding me. I know that kind of face. And don’t forget I’m teaching at university. There are at least three students every day, staring holes into the air just like you do now”
“Well, uhm… yeah, there is someone, actually.”
“And you miss her?”
Ray blushed.
“You could say so”
“She’s from here? Then there’s still enough time for a visit. It’s only three p.m. I don’t want you to be caught in an old man’s house when there’s better for you to do.”
“It’s okay. I didn’t plan on anything else, Sir.”
Birnbom chuckled. “And I thought today’s youth was a little more spontaneous.”
Ray was not sure about what that should mean and fought down the tiny hope to see Brian today.
“Uhm…” He decided to dare asking and risking being rude again. “You mean I could leave?”
“Sure! This was never meant to be a day trip, lad.” (Why did he have to call him ‘lad’ all the time?)
There was only one problem. But, Ray was brave again.
“Uhm… can I trust you?”
“But of course!” he said and thought ‘Of course that had to come… Young folks…‘
“Ah, would you mind not telling my parents that… I left earlier?”
“I do not have a reason for talking to your parents about anything that was discussed here.”
Since Ray still looked at him a little uncertain he added, “Leave already, they won’t know. Not from me, at least.”
Ray nodded and thankfully told him he was very grateful and pleased to have made the professor’s acquaintance and then quickly went to his mountain bike.
“And Ray, you are always welcome here. If there’s any question…”
“I will definitely come again. Thank you very much!”
