Chapter 9
Sorry for such a long hiatus. Real life was becoming very hectic. I promise consistent updates from now on.
Disclaimer: These characters are mine.
Only moments were left in the game. With the clock stopped, the team huddled together. The young men were warriors in their own right. Each battling an up-hill battle against fatigue, themselves and the other team. Coach Olsen had no more timeouts. He only had words for his boys.
The stands were full. Each row stacked shoulder to shoulder. Parents, friends, the entire towns of both teams had traveled in hopes that their boys would go the distance. Among the hundreds, even thousands, of eyes in the stands, Warren only had one pair in his head, a striking blue set.
He looked around the huddle, at his tired beaten teammates. For a second, he realized that everything he wanted could still be had and everyone else could find the glory they’d trained so hard to achieve. “We can do this guys. You hear me?!” Warren looked around the circle. “Who wants this? Who can taste the next fifteen seconds like the air?” Nods and grunts came from the dirt and grass covered boys. Like true warriors caught in a short lull of battle, they looked to their leader, whose his words were pulling that last bit of energy out of them.
“JD, I need you, man. If you guys hold them off me and JD can break away from the guy that’s been hugging your ass all night, then we got this in the BAG!” Hands in.”
Hands stacked then the young men jumped and pumped as they found their resolve to win take over. This was Warren’s goodbye to the game and he intended to go out with a bang,. A shrill whistle blew and they arranged themselves at the line of scrimmage. The West Falls Rebels danced around the line, surging and receding, grunting and yelling.
Warren’s eyes flicked up to the clock. His heart raced in his ears, pulse throbbing as he called the play. His eyes darted to the left then the right, making sure that he always had JD in his sight. “Down. Set. Hike!” The ball snapped upward between the Center’s hands and into Warren’s. His field of vision shrank considerably being filled by the active bodies in a chaotic state of motion.
The pocket was shrinking gradually and the wall of bodies was collapsing due to the surge of the opponent’s defense. JD was running fast. This was where he needed to take a chance. The ball sailed through the air. Noise faded out to a buzzing silence. The ball began to steadily drop drawing ever closer to JD’s moving body. Impact of a hard body threw him to the ground. The only thought in Warren’s mind was how big Jace’s smile would be once they won.
The hands that pulled him up and shoved him from sweaty man to man, all so dizzying and exciting. “You did boys! You did it!” Coach Olsen wrapped Warren in a big hug. Fans rushed the field; all gushing and screaming as the team were congratulated for winning.
Time pasted in a whirl. People came, went, grabbed, and pulled him. All Warren wanted was to peel off his uniform for the final time. This wasn’t an ending for him. It was only the beginning and he couldn’t wait to begin with Jace.
