Romantic Hangovers
ROMANTIC HANGOVERS
The next morning was a fuzzy blur of colors, lights, and little else. Madison vaguely kept count of how many times she turned off her alarm clock, and when the hands finally indicated it was one in the afternoon, she staggered from her bed. There had been no sign of Genie all morning; since his annoying introduction into her life, he had positioned himself at the foot of her bed every morning, begging and pleading for her to end his agony. Today… there was nothing but silence. But Madison didn’t have long to dwell on his absence; the headache that, in bed, had seemed monstrous enough had multiplied, and it had brought friends. It was only after an hour-long shower she finally went out to face the damage she had wrought.
She had to be honest; she wasn’t quite sure what she was expecting. She wouldn’t have blamed him if he had disappeared all together, or spent the night ripping up her furniture with sharpened salad tongs. But whatever she had expected, it had not been this-Genie, calmly scanning through the newspaper, as the dishes in her sink washed themselves.
He didn’t look up as she had come in. She wondered if he had even heard-she didn’t dare come within six feet of him in case he had, and he was waiting for her to get close enough so he could gut her. But the silence between them was so thick she could feel herself choking on it, and she sputtered out the only words that could come to her.
“I’m sorry.”
He didn’t even glance up as he turned a page. “I was thinking of taking out an ad for a new master. Think the newspaper editors take gold for their fees?”
“Look-I’m sorry about last night. I lost my head. I have never drank that much in my life.”
“Surprise, surprise,” Genie cut in wryly, but his face was as deadpan as if it’d been cut from stone.
“And… I shouldn’t have, ya know, done that stuff. And I’m sorry.”
“Done what stuff?” for the first time, Genie’s eyes locked onto hers, blazing. “Come onto me? Given me false hope? You mean that STUFF?”
Madison imagined herself two inches tall. “Yeah,” she mumbled.
With a snort of indignation, Genie swept around the counter and came within inches of her personal bubble. “Tell me one thing, MISTRESS,” he declared,” Did you enjoy it?”
“I-“
“Did you like toying with me? I colored you for many things, but a femme fatale-!”
Now it was Madison’s time to snort. “I apologized, okay? I think you’re carrying this a little far…”
“Why? Because I haven’t had sex in over a thousand years? I WANT sex! As hard as that is for you to imagine, it is my only purpose! It is all I am built for? Tell me, without it, what good am I? What good am I to you?” He threw his hands into her face, his own twisted with pain,” Am I really so repulsive to you? Am I truly that undesirable?”
“Genie, no-“
“Then why won’t you sleep with me?!”
Madison suddenly couldn’t control her body; without realizing it, she grabbed his face with both hands and kissed him full on the mouth. They made contact for only a moment, before she broke away, blushing with a strange aura she could feel all the way to her toes. “I’ll make you a deal, Genie. It may take me a while… but if you promise to get out of my life, I’ll sleep with you.”
