An unexpected Discovery

Candy leaned against the shower wall and closed her eyes, the hot water felt good on her back and shoulders. She could feel the warm drops rolling down her forehead on then dripping off the tip of her nose. She leaned back and scrubbed her body with some scented stuff, probably Kay’s. For some reason she felt dirty even though she was perfectly clean. Deciding that she had better quit while she still had skin she rinsed off and turned off the water.

She stepped out onto the cold tile, the mirrors were fogged and the air was muggy. She grabbed a towel from the rack and dried off. She didn’t bother to dry her hair she just shook her head a bit sending water over the white walls and countertops. She wiped the mist away from the mirror with her hand and looked at her body. She was average height 5’ 6’’, 5’7’’ maybe, her skin was pale, she had not a single scar on her body, unlike Bade, she could regenerate. She looked like every other human except for the smallest of details.

First of all there were her lips, seemingly normal enough, but if one looked closely they could see the small pores, almost like tear ducts, in the corners of her mouth. These small pores were what secreted the acid like cherry colored substance that was constantly covering her lips. Her saliva was twice as deadly.

Then there were her golden eyes, her most obvious non human attribute. She kept them covered almost all the time with her mirrored sunglasses, she had several pairs. Then there were her fingernails, they were about 5 times thicker than a humans, they grew a lot faster too, they were a pearly white color. She usually kept them painted. Also she didn’t have a belly button. She wasn’t born, so she never had an umbilical cord.

Her insides were completely different though. Her bones were like steel, it would take a diamond drill to penetrate them. Her organs were incased in a material similar to the substance her bones were made of, this made it difficult to kill her. She was incredibly light considering what was inside of her.

Candy put on a green t shirt and some ripped blue jeans. When she walked out Ice was sitting on her bed.

“Where’s the girl?” Candy asked as she put on her glasses then her shoulder holster.

“She’s in her room.” Ice was wearing a black button down shirt that had had it’s sleeve’s cut off.

Candy put on a jean jacket then put her gun in its holster.

“Nathan wants you to come down to the lab before you go out again.”

“I planned on it.”

Ice stood and crossed the room. Candy looked at him. His eyes were the bluest gray, his hair was jet black.

“He thinks Celeste is an experiment too.” Ice was at least half a foot taller than her.

“I suspected as much. Is that it?”

“No…” Ice stood firm looking into her mirrored glasses.

“Then spit it out.”

Ice stood silent for a minute. “Fuck it.” He said before storming out of the room. “You’re infuriating you know that?!” he yelled as he retreated, he slammed the door.

Ice punched a hole in the drywall. “Damn her…” He closed his eyes, he could see her face, beautiful, serene, perfect. He had had feelings for her since her first laid eyes on her, even after finding out she wasn’t human, he couldn’t stop loving her. She had once said, that Experiments, had no human emotions. But he knew better, he knew her. He still found himself in wanting. He could never let her go, even if she couldn’t love him in return, he would never abandon her. He would make her see.

Candy put on her shoes and socks. She knew what he had meant to say, he was going to say that he loved her. She couldn’t allow him to be involved with her, sure, she could tell him she loved him, maybe have meaningless sex with him like she did Bade, to use him as a way to vent her frustrations, but she didn’t want to. Even if she wasn’t capable of love, she still had feelings of some kind for him. He was her partner, her friend, she didn’t want to abuse his love like that. If ever she could love someone, she often thought, it would be Ice.

Candy walked out and took the elevator to the second floor, as the doors opened she was greeted by a short girl with brown eyes and short black hair. She wore thick black eyeliner and purple lipstick. It was Phillips sister, Angie.

“Hey Candy, Kay told me you were going to take me out tonight.” Her hair was laired and flipped up at the ends. She was wearing a paid skirt and a black tank top.

“That’s right, we’ll be leaving shortly, you should get some pants on.”

“Alright, this is going to kick ass! What are we going to be doing?”

“Just simple recon, but bring your gun just in case.”

“Ok!” The girl seemed to bounce out of the room.

“You’ve certainly made her day.” A deep voice called, a tall man with salt and pepper colored hair rounded the corner with a clip board in his hands.

“It would seem so” Candy smirked. “Still alive old man.”

“Now Candy, didn’t I ever teach you to respect your elders.?” The man smiled.

“It’s good to see you Nathan.”

“Aye, its good to see you as well my dear.”

Nathan was well respected not only for his genius, but for his age as well, in this world you were lucky to see thirty, Nathan was well into his fifties. He was definitely the father of the group, and they were all his children, they all looked up to him and he looked after them. If it where not for him, most of them would have been dead long ago.

“I’m glad you’ve come, I have much to tell you.”

“Have you finished the autopsy on that last ghost?”

“Yes and I have found something remarkable!”

“What is it?”

“Come!” he motioned her over. “You can see for yourself!”

Candy walked with him into his special office, splayed out on the table like a recently dissected frog, was a ghost.

“What am I looking at?” Candy put on some gloves.

“Look in the head, notice something?”

“The brain seems larger than usual.” She noted.

Yes but not only that, see the part that looks swollen? That’s the part of the brain that controls motor functions.”

“Are you telling me this son of a bitch can talk?”

“Well, not now, but when it was alive perhaps, its vocal cords, were also more advanced.”

“They are getting smarter. Do you think that this ones part of a new batch from the Facility?”

“I’m not so sure…look at the abdomen, see this organ here?”

“What is that?”

“It’s a uterus…”

“A what?” Candy looked up into Nathan’s eyes, searching them, trying to decipher if he was joking, but there was nothing but truth there.

“The Ghosts are starting to evolve on their own, and at an unbelievable rate. And what’s worse, I don’t think that it is the work of the facility, I think they are doing it on their own.”

“I don’t understand, ghosts don’t have sex’s, they can’t reproduce.”

“I understand what your saying, but in the old world, things like this did happen. There was a species of lizards that all the species was female, they evolved out of the necessity to survive. I think the same thing has happened here.”

“So your telling me that they can reproduce without sex?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”

“Even if they have sexual organs that doesn’t mean that they can give birth.”

“I don’t think that they have birth at all.”

“What do you mean.”

This uterus has only one opening, at that’s how the sperm that’s created in these glands here get in” He pointed to another alien organ. “But that’s it, there’s no way for the young to escape, no birth canal see?”

“But that doesn’t make sense.”

“Exactly, but you of all people should have guessed the next bit, hell I should have guessed the next bit sooner. Look at what I took out of the uterus…”

Nathan held up a metal pan, inside of it, nestled between the folds of a cloth, were two newborn ghosts.

“Jesus Christ…are they alive?”

“No, when I took them out they’re lungs weren’t developed enough for them to breathe on their own, they died. But look in there mouths.” Candy pried open the one on the rights mouth with a scalpel, inside were four rows of razor sharp teeth.

“It doesn’t have lungs, but it has teeth?”

“Yes, don’t you see? Human children have no need for teeth, when we are little we get our nourishment from our mothers breast, but ghosts have no mammary glands, or breast for that matter.”

“But that still doesn’t explain how they get out of the uterus?”

“Doesn’t it?” Nathan waited until the shock of realization hit Candy.

“You don’t mean…”

“That’s right, they eat their way out of there own mother.”
