chapter 9

"Dead?" Raina asked. For some reason she wasn't sure she heard him right.

"Yes. Hit a tree while driving drunk."

"I thought it was weird when he didn't come back. I just didn't think he died. I guess I thought something had come up or he'd forgotten me or something. Then you came along."

"Like I said, I had to feed the dog. I was his sole heir, I got everything and I don't want any of it. Especially the dog."

"Why did you take him then? Why not bring him to the pound or find someone that wants him?"

"Because as soon as I opened that door he refused to leave your side. I carried you out of the room and downstairs and he followed and when we got to the bottom of the stairs I told him to sit and stay. He wasn't having any of it, he sat and stayed right in front of the door to go outside and wouldn't let me past him so finally I told him to come."

"For a while, I hated that dog. My first impression was horrible but I don't even want to get into that. All I know is that over time my entire opinion of him changed. Mark was always so horrid and every night when I was laying curled up in a ball on the floor, trying to cry silently so I wouldn't be beaten for waking Mark, King was always there. He'd lay beside me and lick the tears off my face and just let me know I wasn't all alone. Letting me know that someone cared, even if he was just a dog." Raina blinked back the tears that were threatening to fall. The nightmare was over and she was safe. "I don't even know how long I was in that room but he helped me a lot getting through it. whenever he scratched at the door or whined, I knew it was because he wanted to see me. At a time when you don't have anyone else in the world that means a lot."

"Then you can take the dog. Shit, you can take the house too."

"What?" Raina asked, again not believing her ears.

"I don't want the dog or the house. You take them."

"Look, I'll take the dog no problem if you don't want him but we're talking about a house. If you don't want the house why don't you just sell it?"

"Because I don't want or need the money. That house holds bad memories for me, the sooner I get rid of it the better."

"I couldn't take the house. All I ever wanted was to kill Mark and now, I don't have to. I could never live there again, even if I wanted to. I don't doubt that you have bad memories of it, but I have bad memories too. It takes all my strength just to walk up and down the stairs. I can't look at myself in the bathroom mirror without crying. Certain rooms, certain spots, like where I used to sleep... I wouldn't be able to live with."

"The stairs?"

"I fell." Raina said quickly. Trying to figure out why of all places, she had mentioned the stairs. Tears were starting to roll down her cheeks and she hastily wiped at them.

"You fell down my stairs. Will you become hysterical the next time you have to go up them?"

"He pushed me." she whispered before burying her face in her hands to cry. She heard Adam's chair move before she felt his arms around her.

"You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to." he said, holding her. Raina took her hands off her face and for the first time since childhood, she cried on someones shoulder. Adam didn't seem to mind, he just continued holding her while stoking her hair patiently. Raina let it all out; it was too hard to keep inside any longer. She cried for the life she lost the day Mark kidnapped her. She cried for all the torture she'd endured. "I was pregnant." she whispered between sobs and then she cried harder for the child that was taken from her.
