Shukufuku
“What did you name him?” Kyoei asked, looking down at Shai’s figure in the hospital bed, the small boy cradled to her breasts, sleeping peacefully. On the other side of the bed were Grandpa Shinji, and Teiyoku, whom looked like he wanted to punch Kyoei and tell him, ever so nicely, to get the Hell out.
“His name is Shukufuku,” Shai explained. Everyone stared. “It means blessing. But I figure we can call him Shu for short.”
“It’s perfect,” Kyoei agreed.
Shai only nodded. She looked like she needed more sleep, but she had insisted on introducing Shu to Kyoei before she fell asleep. She had not realized that Teiyoku was going to come along. If she had known she would have chosen to sleep.
“I think it’s time you two… men left,” Shinji butted in, standing up from his chair and forcing Teiyoku to do the same. “I think my daughter needs rest, and Shu will be in the nurse’s area soon. You can see him through the glass.”
Kyoei leaned forward and gave Shai a small kiss on the head, which she cherished every moment of. He also leaned down and kissed little Shu’s furrowed brow before he walked out of the room. He did not leave the hallway, however. He waited for Teiyoku to exit, knowing the man was trying to take his time before leaving.
Teiyoku stepped over to Shai awkwardly, very aware that Shinji’s eyes were on him the entire time. Teiyoku leaned over and kissed Shai sweetly on the cheek. “He’s beautiful,” he told her. “He takes after his mother.”
Shai turned her eyes downward, looking directly at her son. She did not see it. She only saw a newborn baby that came from her body hours before. This was her child. Her child, and Teiyoku’s. She felt that familiar lump catch in her throat and she continued to just look down, unable to say a word to the man who had impregnated her.
“You are upsetting my daughter,” Shinji said protectively. “I think it is time you left.”
Teiyoku nodded and ran his hands through Shai’s hair. “You make a beautiful mother,” he told her, and turned to follow Kyoei out into the hallway.
Kyoei leaned against the wall waiting for him. Teiyoku knew the younger man was going to approach him, he had been dying to approach him for a long time now. It did not mean he was in any way ready for the confrontation, it just meant he knew it would come.
“I know what you are trying to do,” Kyoei pointed out, his anger seething somewhere deep in his belly.
Teiyoku turned to him, taking on the arrogant attitude of his he had grown accustomed to as a teacher. “What am I trying to do?”
“You want Shai again, to be some sex slave of yours on the side while you are married to Fuji’s mother,” snapped Kyoei. “You have no interest in that baby, you just want a young piece of ass you can control.”
“Are you finished?” Teiyoku asked, crossing his arms against his chest.
Kyoei took a menacing step forward. “No, I’m not,” he said quite bluntly. “If I see you come near her again, I will hunt you down like the rabid dog you deserve to be treated as. And just like a rabid dog I think you need to be taken out of your misery. Take your hornball ways away from Shai and go find some other unsuspecting teenage girl to try to seduce, but leave Shai alone. She’s had enough of you.”
“It scares you, doesn’t it?”
“What?”
“It scares you,” Teiyoku laughed. “You are afraid that if I show interest in Shai and the baby that she will come back to me. You are afraid she will come back to the person her heart really belongs to, and you can’t stand that. I’m not chasing Shai because she’s a piece of ass. I realized too late that I love her, and quite frankly more than you could ever care for her. I love Shai, and I am going to do my best to win her back. In the meantime, you can try to keep her close, but I will win her over.”
Teiyoku turned and walked away, feeling very self-satisfied, while Kyoei stood and simmered, hating every moment of that man’s existence.
