The Game
Here’s the game, tell me what you think…
*****The Big Game*****
“Go bears! Go bears! Yeah!”
“Jesus Tina would you shut up?” Regina rested against the lockers impatiently. “It’s almost time to go. Honestly you’d think you guys had never picked up an eyeliner in your life.
The cheerleaders scurried in hurry. Everyone in the school thought ‘Sweet Little Gin’ was just the dumb girlfriend of the quarterback but boy did they know better. She glared at one girl, a sophomore, and she twitched in fright, messing up her mascara.
Regina gritted her teeth but sympathized. Gwen was new and looked a the world through the eyes of doe in the wilderness.
Regina stalked over to her, and Gwen looked up a her in terror. She was coltish, skinny, with a wide, smiling mouth and sparkly eyes, or at least they sparkled when she wasn’t terrified. Her hair was golden brown and cut short with bangs.
“Sweet little Gin’ jerked the mascara wand from the girl’s fingers and, gripping Gwen’s chin firmly, she applied the mascara perfectly in one stroke. She did the other and then walked away. Gwen stared after her, her mouth open to form the word ‘thanks…’
They dimly heard the cheer of the stands as the team ran onto field.
“Okay bratwursts, let’s go” Regina swept out and they hustled after her. As soon as they cam in view of the stands Regina’s walk went all hips and hair.
The announcer yelled. “And our lovely cheerleaders!” They smiled and twirled.
Devin slumped on the benches. All the other players were stretching etc but it wasn’t like he was going to get put in. He slumped lower and watched Jimmy pull a touchdown. The stands went wild.
“J! I! M! M! Y! Star of Reagan High!”
The cheerleaders voices rang out.
“J I M M Y So fine! Baby please won’t you be mine!”
“Devin, you’re going in”
He looked up with a ‘huh?’ face at his father.
“C’mon, hurry up” he said impatiently. Devin finally got his feet working.
“Okay, listen, you have to get them away from Jimmy. Jimmy, those Madison bastards are vicious but with a clearer coast you can…”
Out on the field Devin ran as hard as he could, zig zagging fast. He would not fail, he would not fail…
Looking back it would have been hard to describe the sound. It was something between a crack and crunch. He plowed into the ground under three big guys in blue. From a crack between two of them, the last thing he saw was twice as many plow into Jimmy. He’d failed.
Regina turned around from facing the stands to see Devin running onto the field. Why were they putting him in, he was still so skinny and shorter than all the other guys!
“C’mon Bears~!” C’mon Devin! Oh god please…
Her eyes were glued to him even as she was tossed in he air. She turned in the air from instinct and practice as she still watched him.
It seemed to happen in slow motion. Three igures plowed into Devin so hard she could almost feel it. She watched as his head banged against the ground and the sound seemed to echo in her ears.
\"No!!\" she screamed but it came out in a whisper.
She felt herself falling and felt frantic fingers trying to grab her as she fell. The ground rushed up at her…
