“It’s just another manic Monday, I wish it were Sunday, cause that’s my fun day, my I don’t have to run day! It’s just another manic Monday…”

I found myself singing along to my neighbor’s radio while I gave my cat’s their due food and water before making my own breakfast. I was suffering from a high that didn’t normally follow being exposed to people for any lengthy period of time… But then Marina was just different…

Mikka rubbed her length along my leg causing me to look down at her. “And you guys like her too, which is strange…” I muttered, still with a smile on my face. Tiri looked towards me, crumbs of her kibble still on her face and she mewled. I smiled as she dashed off to go clean herself. “Alright, have to go to work.” somehow I was looking forward to it.

“What is Mrs. Powers doing back here?” I whispered to the receptionist as I passed. She shrugged

“Don’t know, she wouldn’t say.” I had a sinking feeling I would not like where this is going. I went into my office, and Mrs. Powers followed not too long after.

“Yes Mrs. Powers, what can I do for you today?” ‘Please don’t tell me you did something with your cat again.’ she fidgeted slightly before answering

“Well, I don’t know if you know, but I also have a dog…” I looked away from her with my lips pursed. My good mood now officially ruined.

“Where is he?” I asked not really wanting to know the answer.

“Well, I couldn’t really bring him, so I was wondering if you could still help him…” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath before nodding.

“You’ll have to wait outside until my lunch break… unless of course he’s in a similar predicament to your cat?” I answered with more than a little annoyance in my voice.

“I… No, it’s not like my cat…” she looked down at her feet, shame creeping into her face and scent. I felt a bit of relief knowing that she wasn’t like so many other owners to try the same thing twice, or three times… or five…

“I’ll need you to wait outside then.” she nodded and went back to the waiting room while I buzzed the receptionist to send in the next patient.

~~~~~~
Dogs and cats for shots, wounded animals, pregnant animals, birthing animals, mistreated animals…
Dogs who manage to somehow get their heads stuck in cookie jars…
I turned to Mrs. Powers with my hands in my pockets. I was glad that the cookie jar was one of those decorative ones with designs cut into them, but those designs are the things she wants to preserve more than the comfort of her dog… I looked at her with my piercing alpha eyes, daring her to look away, daring her to run and hide like a child who was caught doing something horribly wrong.
“He was trying to get the cookies?” I asked finally. She nodded, he whined and moved blindly to my side. “And why was the cookie jar open? Actually, you know what? I don’t wanna know.” I said taking my hands out of my pockets and stopping him before he ran into something, hurting himself in the process. The hesitancy in her scent told me what I already suspected. She wanted her dog’s head out of the jar, but the jar had to remain intact. I sighed.
“Let’s see how I can do this without hurting you or this jar, huh buddy?” he whined again and I rocked forward to the balls of my feet, now effectively ignoring Mrs. Powers behind me. I managed to fit my fingers below the rim of the jar and was pleased to find that there was comfortable enough space around his neck for him to breath without feeling restricted, but the contours of the inner rim posed a problem, ruling out dry pulling. I smirked slightly and examined other options before asking...
“Do you still have that KY jelly?” looking back to the now shell-shocked Mrs. Powers.
Back at the clinic I was met by an unexpected surprise in the form of a bubbly blonde, who was actually not looking pleased to be here. I frowned, “What brings you here Terra?” I asked touching her elbow as I passed. She followed me to my office and sat upon the examination table folding her arms across her chest.
“We have to talk.”
“What about?” I asked closing the door and turning the lock.
“There was another wolf in the town the night before.” I turned to her with a questioning look. “He made a warning…” my blood went cold
“Warning?” I asked softly, not betraying the fear I felt with my voice.
“Yes. He told me to tell Ookami, the pack does not forgive.” her eyes narrowed at me and I fought the urge to glare at her. “I picture of you face flashed before my mind.” Anger and hurt radiated from her, but I could tell her anger was not directed at me… the hurt was, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“What would you have done Terra? Welcomed me into your pack?” I whispered “The great Ookami,” sarcasm dripped all over the words “Benevolent leader, kind alpha… It wouldn’t have worked. You even being in proximity with me during the full moon would have lost you your pack.” Terra looked shocked at my words and disdain for my past life.
“But you-”
“I don’t want to go back there Terra.” I interrupted. “I like my life quiet. Just me, and maybe one other…” ‘Why did my thoughts run on Marina?’ “But I don’t want to have a pack again. There’s just too much hurt there.” she looked away in defiance and I leaned on the door, slipping my hands in my pockets.
“So that will be a ‘no’ on the run…”
“Yeah. That’ll be a ‘no’ on the run.” she sighed, then smiled.
“Then heads up, I think they’re looking for you.”
“I figured that out surprisingly, but thanks.” I replied pushing off the door and letting her out. “Tell Angeli ‘hi’ for me, yeah?”
“Yeah…I’ll have to ask her how she knows you.” she added as an afterthought. I took a few moments to myself before calling for my next patient, determined to check on Marina before I went home…
