Chapter Eight:
“You shouldn't lie Rei, cause you’re bad at it.”
Rei crossed his arms in front of him and stared directly into Naoya’s eyes, trying to remain calm. “I don't know what you’re talking about Naoya. I don't lie, and I take offense to that kind of remark about me. Even if I like you Naoya I won't let you get away with accusing me of such a thing.”
“This apartment belongs to Naru right?” Naoya asked.
"W-wait you know Naru?" Rei asked, his eyes wide open in shock.
"Yes Rei. I know him, he is my nephew,” answered Naoya. “Remember what I told you on the plane?”
Rei put two and two together and stared at Naoya in shock. “So you knew all along.”
"Yes Rei, I knew.”
"Shit you must really think badly of me now for lying,” Rei confessed. He figured that since he had already been found out, it was best to admit to it before things took a turn for the worst. Plus he didn't want Naoya to hate him.
“You are so cute when you look like that,” said Naoya.
Rei’s face lit up once more. “You think I'm cute?” he asked hopefully.
Naoya nodded. “Yes. That face you made when you thought all was lost. I love it,” Naoya said with a laugh. Then he looked at his watch and saw how late it was. "I should leave, it’s late." said Naoya.
“If you must leave now, I'll lend you my clothes, and tomorrow you can pick yours up.” Rei suggested this because he wanted to see Naoya again tomorrow. As soon as Naoya agreed, he quickly disappeared into his room and dug out a blue shirt and a pair of jeans. He hurried back and gave them to Naoya who took the clothes and disappeared into his room to change.
Naoya walked towards the door. He turned around and wished Rei a good night. Then he left, closing the door and leaving Rei alone in his new apartment.
----
Naru tossed and turned in his new bed, trying his best to fall asleep. He gave up and climbed out of bed two hours after laying there, staring at the ceiling in the dark. Being as quiet as possible, he opened his bedroom door and slipped out. While making his way down to the kitchen, he passed by Ryuu’s bedroom. The door swung open right after he passed by.
“What are you doing at this time of night Naru?”
Naru spun around and let out a sigh. “I couldn't sleep and was on my way to the kitchen for a glass of warm milk.”
“I'll join you,” said Ryuu after a short moment of silence. He stepped out of his room, shut the door and followed Naru to the kitchen downstairs. Naru made them both some warm milk as soon as they reached the kitchen.
“What are you doing up so late?” Naru asked as he handed Ryuu his glass of warm milk.
“Talking to my brother,” answered Ryuu.
“This late?”
“Yes,” replied Ryuu. Then he drank some of his warm milk. “What about you? Why are you up so late?”
Naru sat down and drank his milk before answering. “I kept recalling that weird phone call from last week. The female voice screaming, her voice… It. sounded like my sister.” Naru then looked up from his glass and at his boss, “I know what you are thinking Boss. How could that poor woman be my sister when she is alive and well...”
“You think too much Naru. That weird phone call was just a prank from a bunch of idiot kids,” Ryuu cut in, not allowing Naru to finish. “You shouldn't lose sleep over something like that. Now get your ass upstairs into bed and get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow is going to be a long day at work.”
Naru was a bit surprised by this bit of news and it showed on his face. “Boss, you are letting me return to work?”
“Yes and there is no need for you to look so surprised. You are well right now so it only makes sense that you should return to work,” answered Ryuu. Then he stood up and left the kitchen, leaving his glass of warm milk half empty.
What a waste Naru thought. He reached over took his boss’ glass of milk and finished it for him. Then he proceeded to the sink where he washed the two glasses, dried them and put them away. Then he went upstairs to bed.
Walking into work the next morning with his boss by his side felt weird to Naru. “Why do we have to come to work together?” he whispered as they made their way to the elevator.
“Because we live together,” Ryuu answered loudly enough for everyone to hear. All heads turned their way.
“You did that on purpose didn't you?” Naru accused his boss. His face showed how mad he was with the man beside him. “You just had to go and announce it to everyone didn't you!”
Ryuu smirked just as the elevator door opened. He got inside and so did Naru. The two didn't say another word to each other. Naru went straight to his desk and Ryuu disappeared inside his office. Naru put his things away then went to the break room to make coffee. He poured salt in instead of sugar and with a smile he brought the coffee to his boss.
Naru saw that his boss was already buried in his work. He placed the coffee on the desk and left the office. He just sat his butt down on his chair when he heard his boss yell. He counted to three and the office door opened.
He took one look at the coffee stain on his boss’ blue shirt and chuckled. “Boss, did you forget to do your laundry last night?” He made that comment with a grin.
“I am going to get you back for this Naru!”
“Really? Then I am looking forward to it,” said Naru still grinning. He doubted his boss could come up with anything, so he wasn't worried.
“I will get you back Naru and when I do, you will wish that you hadn't pissed me off!” With that said, Ryuu disappeared back into his office and Naru got started on his work. When lunchtime came, Naru was surprised. He didn't expect his boss to drag him out to lunch with him. He didn't even get to let out a word of protest. By the time they were out of the building, almost everyone who worked there had seen them.
Naru stared at the restaurant in front of him with wide open eyes. This restaurant. He remembered when he was small he had passed by it with his father, sister and mother once. He had made a wish there that his father had promised to fulfill for him one day. That day never came.
“Please tell me that we are not going to eat here Boss.”
“Sorry to disappoint you, but we are. This is one of my favorite places to eat.”
Naru turned to face his boss. “ Well sorry to disappoint you Boss but I must insist that we eat somewhere else,” he said in a firm voice.
Ryuu narrowed his eyes at Naru. “Like it or not Naru, we are eating here and that's final.”
Without saying another word, Naru walked right past his boss, opened the passenger side of the car and got inside. He slammed the car door shut and sat facing the front, his arms crossed in front of him.
“Naru, what the hell do you think you’re doing? Get back out here this minute!”
Seeing that Naru was showing no sign of complying with his demand, Ryuu sighed in defeat. He walked around the car to the driver’s side and opened the car door. He got inside and slammed the door shut. He glared at Naru. “Shit! Why do you have to make things so difficult Naru?”
“You’re the one who makes it difficult Boss!” snapped Naru. “I already said that I was not eating there!”
Ryuu leaned back against his car seat, both his hands on the steering wheel. “Your sister told me about your wish. I thought that I would make your wish come true,” said Ryuu. He missed the look of surprise on Naru’s face. "I never knew that you hated my guts so much that you would refuse to--”
“I never said anything about hating you!” Naru cut in before his boss could finish what he wanted to say. He wanted to make that clear to his boss. His boss annoyed him but he doesn't hate him.
“You don't hate me? I find that a bit hard to believe Naru since you always play pranks on me,” commented Ryuu.
“That's because you piss me off Boss,” said Naru with a chuckle. Then he opened the passenger door and exited the car. He saw the surprised look on his boss’s face, “Come on, since we are here we might as well go in,” he said with a warm smile. His boss returned his smile.
The two of them went inside and got a table next to the window. Naru watched his boss drink his usual red wine with a warm smile on his face. "Boss, why do you like red wine so much?" he asked with a bit of curiousty.
“Because it is the same color as blood,” replied Ryuu.
“What kind of a reason is that?” asked Naru.
Ryuu let out a soft chuckle. “One day Naru you will understand."
“I doubt that,” said Naru. The waiter returned to their table with their meal.
Naru thanked the waiter and stared at his food before digging into it. The two of them ate and had a pleasant conversation together as a man watched them from the far corner.
He sat down in the corner where he could see his target. He watched with a smile lingering on his lips. He couldn't take his eyes of off Naru. Naru… his beloved Naru. He mesmerized him. So lovely, so untouchable. “Soon Naru you will be mine.”
His Naru was laughing and gazing at that bastard Ryuu. He lost his smile as he recognized the look in Naru’s eyes. His Naru had fallen in love with the man sitting opposite to him. “No my Naru! Don't fall in love with him! He is not good enough for you. He’s just using you to get to me.”
Unable to bear it any longer, the Prince Charming paid for his drinks and left the restaurant in a foul mood. Tomorrow he would send a little gift to his sweet Naru. One that would shock him.
End of chapter eight.
