Abuse at it's Finest
It had taken a long time to clean up the Diner. By the time I had finished it was midnight. Since I wasn’t wearing the usual outfit, all I had to do was put the mop and broom away and head home.
As quickly as I could move with my injured side, I went in back and opened the closet door to put them away. I was so focused on leaving that I failed to hear my boss sneak up behind me.
“You’re sleeping here!” Mrs. Cecilia suddenly shouted at me and shoved me into the closet.
It was Saturday, so the diner wasn’t open all day. Tomorrow though, the customers would be coming in by 8a.m.
I heard the lock click as I turned to push the door back open, yet the pain in my side stopped me in my tracks and I sat still to quell the pain.
“I’m not taking the chance of letting you run off again!” She mumbled and slapped the other side of the closet door.
The closet was small and dark. There was a distinct smell of pneumonia, so strong it made my eyes water and my lungs burn. It was usually used as a floor cleaner, but here in this little room it was taking my oxygen and I couldn’t breathe.
“No!” I shouted, consumed by panic. “Let me out!” I began pounding on the closet door. If I stayed in her all night, I was positive I wouldn’t live till morning. “NOOOOOO!” I screeched, my voice cracked as I began to cry.
“Shut up!” I heard her shout back.
Desperate, I began to plea. “Please let me out! I’ll do anything just don’t leave me in here! I’m gonna die! Please!!”
Rationally, I probably should have realized the irony in my words. Earlier I didn’t mind dying, but now that I was faced with a situation where I might, I didn’t want to anymore.
“Boy, if you died no one would care, you’re gonna have to give me a more important reason than that.”
Hearing this, I knew she was bargaining with me. I was her only employee and she didn’t even have to pay me anymore than a few spare scraps. If I were to leave, she would have to run and clean the Diner all by herself.
“Let me out!! Let me out!” I could hardly think straight! “Please don’t kill me! I don’t want to die! Please! Let me out! I’ll do anything you tell me to just please don’t kill me!!”
I banged on the door with all my might, no longer conscious of the pain in my side. I even commenced scratching at the wood, splintering my fingertips when the door finally opened and I spilled out onto the ground coughing dangerously.
“Fine! Work for me till I say you can leave, regardless of what you’re probation period is!” She ginned down at me.
“Yes.” I whispered with tears in my eyes.
“Great.” She grabbed me by the hair and dragged me to my feet. “Then let me give you more comfortable accommodations.”
She led me out back to where the basement door was located. She unlocked it with one hand and let me fall down the steps as she let go of me with her other hand.
It hurt, but I caught myself before obtaining any real damage.
“This will be you’re room from now on. Now that you’ve agreed to my terms, you’re mine!” With that, she shut the door and locked it.
Down here it was dark. The ground was made of dirt and the wooden ceiling was wet and moldy. It didn’t stink too badly, and there was a lot more room. There was a single rectangular window for light to come in, yet too small for me to fit through.
I climbed to a corner and wrapped my arms around my knees. There was no way out of this. I can no longer go back to my shack, nor hide in my old club house made of doors. I’ll never sit and listen to Old Man Bob as he played his harmonica. I was a prisoner now, and there was nothing I could do about it.
It was at this point which the grim room began to darken. The tears I was shedding were falling freely as I observed the shadow approach me slowly.
Instead of watching it, I closed my eyes and waited to be taken away to a place I now believed was not a dream.
