Alien Landscape
A/N: I don't know if I like this chapter but it's written and it makes up my words for the day so I'm posting it. I do like part of it but as a whole it just seems kind of meh because I didn't use as much description as I wanted to due to lack of inspiration. I don't know what my official wordcount is at the moment because the NaNo website is timing out right now but my computer claims I'm about 150 words ahead of today's goal. Another chapter tomorrow, I think.
Thanks to my reviewer Lisa and everyone who's been reading this.
Lisa: I'm glad you like it. I'm also glad you've enjoyed the dialogue between Ty and Aiden. It's nice to think that sometimes I even succeed at being witty.

“You look absurd.” Ty commented. He wasn’t even sure what Aiden was trying to look like. He himself was dressed the same way he always dressed. Black jeans, dark green t-shirt, and a jacket over that because it was supposed to be cold out today. He had his bag ready with a few extra things than usual and already had it hung off one shoulder. He was wearing his boots again today instead of a pair of sneakers.
“And you look like a fag.” Ty shot him a glare. “I look the way I always look.” He insisted. “Right. You always look like a fag.” Aiden agreed. Ty rolled his eyes at him. “And I suppose you’d say that you don’t look like a fag even though we dress almost exactly the same way- usually.” He amended because Aiden still looked ridiculous at the moment. “What if I wore different clothes? If I was wearing a suit would I still supposedly look like a fag? And if I was naked?”
“You’d look like a fag no matter what you wore.” Aiden cocked his head to the side. “Actually, I thought about it. You’d look even more like a fag if you weren’t wearing clothes but I have to assume that would be a good thing for you.” Ty was beginning to get the idea, finally, that Aiden was talking out his ass. “Why do you assume I’m homosexual?” He asked, more curious than offended. “You look almost stereotypical except you dress like a normal person and look more strong and slender than-” He waved his hand, searching for a word. “Waifish.”
“I look cool, by the way, despite the fact that I wear normal clothes.” Aiden added in answer to the question Ty had posed earlier. “And speaking of normal clothes you should change into some.” The older male suggested. “Because contrary to your media-fueled fantasies all the spies I know wear normal clothes when they’re trying to blend in and do spy stuff.” Aiden sighed dramatically and went to go change with a mutter of something like: “God, you’re so boring.”
He emerged from the bathroom sulkily wearing all black but still looking more or less normal.
“Spy stuff is not very exciting.” Ty shrugged at this exclamation. He didn’t say anything about the fact that it might be more exciting on a different assignment, maybe where he had to kill someone. He didn’t really want to mention it. He preferred not to break the news to him before he had to. Possibly ever. It just wasn’t the kind of thing you wanted to have to have the job to tell someone.
“Time to go.” Ty said. He had alloted extra time on this mission because he ad suspected Aiden was going to be a nuisance. He wasn’t sure if he should feel proud of his foresight and ability to predict other people’s behavior or if he should just continue feeling vaguely annoyed, the way Aiden always made him feel. “Can I at least drive, then?” Aiden asked. Annoyed it was.
This wasn’t a very hard mission this time but if it had been Ty wouldn’t have brought Aiden. Still, he found it somewhat trying. He apparently had convinced Aiden of the need to be quiet and not suspicious but Aiden still had no difficultly quietly and discreetly annoying the hell out of him. Ty rented a room in a hotel and was tempted to go tell Aiden to stay in it and watch porn on pay-per-view but didn’t especially think he’d learn anything that way.
Which lead to Aiden playing lookout. Ty had never needed a lookout before. The ever present chatter in his head whenever there was someone near enough that he could hear them thinking was always warning enough that someone was coming and he might need to cease being suspicious. Still, it gave Aiden something to do instead of bothering him. Aiden seemed content enough with the job but hadn’t even looked to see if there were any cameras in this part of the hotel or anything. There actually weren’t because once you were inside a building the hotel assumed you were probably not a security risk so there was no worry at all of getting caught.
The blond knelt on the floor with a stethoscope hanging loosely around his neck and a set of lockpicks on the floor in front of him. He almost never needed the stethoscope or even the lockpicks. It frequently amused him how satisfied and safe people felt behind their locked doors when most locks could be easily picked or broken. It was reminiscent of the saying “locks are only a deterrent to honest people.”
It took him less than a minute to have the lock open. He packed the lock picks and stethoscope into his bag and calmly stood up. He waited a minute to see if Aiden would notice before finally clearing his throat and motioning him through the door to the service stairs. They trudged up several flights of stairs to the level just below the top floor penthouse. Ty sat down on the steps and took out a notebook and pen.
He closed his eyes and listened to the thoughts of the people on the floor above. He located the right one and after a few minute he had scribbled out everything relevant to what he wanted to know. Assignment over he replaced the notebook and pen ad the trudged back down a couple flights to the level they’d come in through. After checking no one was around they went to the room Ty had rented. Ty immediately flipped through the folder filled with take-away places that would deliver to the hotel.
“That’s it?” Aiden sounded incredulous. “That’s all I needed to do.” Ty confirmed. “That was more boring than history class. Total snooze-o-rama.” Ty smiled at his assessment. “I’m glad you thought so because I’m going to test you on it.” He decided. The blond neglected to say that the test had nothing to do with his babysitting assignment and he’d made it up sheerly to get back at him a little. But then, if he’d said it it would have ruined the effect, wouldn’t it? Aiden groaned at the thought of having to take a test on boring spy stuff.
“What do you want to eat?” Ty asked, holding out the take-out menu. They decided to order a whole mess of chinese food from a near-by restaurant. Ty was glad to have something to eat by the time it arrived and they sat at the little table in the room. Ty wrote questions for Aiden’s test while they both ate and Aiden incessantly flipped channels to look for something “decent” on. Ty finished and shoved the pen and paper at Aiden.
When Aiden picked up the paper Ty snatched the remote and turned the TV off. Then he took the batteries out and put them in his pocket. Satisfied, he took out his book and read while Aiden struggled with the “test.” A while later Aiden grumpily shoved it back across the table at him. “Fine. Stupid spy stuff is a lot harder than it looks.” He said finally. “Can we leave now?” Ty arched an eyebrow up at him. “Don’t you think that might be suspicious?” He asked. “No.” Aiden responded. “They’ll just think we had fantastic sex and ate take-out and watched TV after.”
“Why in the world would they think that?” Ty asked. “Aside from the fact that you look like a fag?” Aiden insulted him again. “They wont think that. They wont think anything suspicious because we didn’t do anything. That’s the beauty of your mind-reading talents, right? No one will ever find out because you don’t even have to ease drop or interrogate people, just dig into their minds and vöila. Let’s leave.”
Ty was surprised and amused that Aiden had actually been paying attention when they’d been talking about “spy stuff” the other day. “Okay.” He replaced the batteries in the remote and threw away the empty take-out containers before he re-packed his bag and followed Aiden out the door. They rode the elevator down to the lobby. As they stepped out Aiden did something unexpected. He wrapped his arm around Ty’s waist and nuzzled at his throat. Ty colored in embarrassment but didn’t fight the blue-haired teenager off as they crossed to the desk and checked out. At least Aiden backed off a little when they reached the desk but kept shooting him looks as Ty gave back the keycard and signed his name.
Finally they left and escaped all the many eyes Ty felt were burning into him since they’d stepped off the elevator. “Did you have to make a scene?” He asked as they neared his car. Aiden smirked. “I wasn’t making a scene. I was enjoying myself.” He responded and Ty found it hard to tell if he was being truthful or not since he was so used to reading people’s minds to learn what they really meant instead of seeking visual or auditory clues. He decided to ignore him and started to drive back to his apartment
“I still think we should have sex.” Aiden declared about half an hour later. Ty just looked at him for a moment and thought of a quote in a book he had just read to explain to himself how it was possible that another person could be so foreign. “Each human is, within himself, an alien landscape to all others.” Ty quoted. It was the younger boy’s turn to look at him blankly. Ty could only hope it incited him to not bring it up again.
