Life and Death

David sat on the front stairs of his house, his head in his hands. The police officer in front of him shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “Son, are you going to be okay?” he asked, and when David didn’t reply the cop turned and looked at Lucas and Anna, who were standing a few feet away. Lucas walked over and sat beside David, slipping his arm around David’s shoulder.

“A fucking heart attack.” David snarled, and made a strange choking sound. Lucas realized he was crying. David lifted his head and looked at the cop. “So what am I supposed to do?” he asked.

The cop sighed. “Did your foster father leave any instructions, maybe with a lawyer or something? Do you know where he keeps important documents?”

David nodded his head and stood up. “When can I go inside?”

“We’re not closing the house off, if that’s what you’re asking.” The cop studied the two boys for a moment. “How old are you two?”

“Eighteen.” The boy said at the same time. David lifted an eyebrow. “Why, is there a problem?” he asked, and there was something in his voice that made Lucas nervous.

“No problem.” The cop looked away again, and David glared at him for a moment. Then he turned to Lucas.

“Go inside for me. There’s a black metal box under the bed in the big bedroom. It’s got one of those combination locks on it. The number’s 0216.” Lucas nodded and stood up. “I have to go to the hospital, right?” David asked the police officer. “The paramedic said-“

“It won’t take long.” The cop assured him, and David nodded. “Do you want me to drive, or will you follow in your car?”

“I’ll drive myself.” David said, and turned to give Lucas and quick kiss on the mouth. “Thank you.” He whispered, and rested his forehead against Lucas’s shoulder for a moment. “I’m sorry about the plans getting fucked up.”

“Don’t worry about that. Just go.” Lucas hugged him for a moment, and Anna slipped up the stairs to stand next to him. David looked at her and tried to smile, and she reached out and squeezed his shoulder. David turned and followed the cop.

Lucas and Anna went inside and started hunting for the box. It wasn’t under the bed, like David had told Lucas, but they found it eventually in the closet. Lucas sat down on the bed and quickly spun in the combination.

“This is really weird.” Anna told him. “Being in a house were someone just died.” She sat down on the other side of the bed while Lucas pawed through the papers in the box. He found David’s foster father’s will in a manila envelope. Curious, he opened it, and Anna reached over to smack him in the side of the head. “You can’t just-“

“Shush.” Lucas snapped, studying the will carefully. “Jesus fucking Christ.” He whispered, turning the page. “Holy shit.”

“What?” Anna crawled over to try and see, but Lucas folded it back up and stuffed it in the envelope. “What does it say?”

Lucas looked at her, unsure what he should be doing right now. “The guy left David everything. The house, his truck, his bank account. Anna…” he paused. “The guy left David almost a hundred thousand dollars in cash alone.”

“What are you going to do?” Lucas asked, running his hand through David’s hair. “Are you going to be okay?”

David had his head on Lucas’s lap, his eyes closed. He’d come home later than they’d both expected, looking miserable and sick. Anna had left shortly after he’d arrived, and now they were sitting on David’s bed. Lucas had never been in his room before. It was dark and cluttered but clean, and seemingly packed with photo albums, photography equipment, and books. Lucas had never really known about David’s photography, and something about that bothered him. He remembered the expensive camera he’d seen in David’s bag that first day they’d met, but he’d never thought about it afterwards. It made him feel like David was a stranger, in a way. He was beginning to realize that even though he knew about David’s past, he knew very little about his present.

David rolled onto his back and looked up at Lucas. “He wasn’t that good of a parent, you know.” He said softly. “We mostly just tried to avoid each other. He was retired when I moved in with him, and all he really did all day was drink and watch television. He would give me money to keep groceries in the house, and for the things I wanted. When he saw how much I loved the Toronado, he signed the title over to me. He never yelled or hit. It was like living with a drunken ATM, to tell you the truth. But I knew he wanted to care about me. There were times when he would take an interest, but I think he was just too old and too tired to be a parent.”

Lucas listened without saying a word. David never talked like this, and he was both shocked and heartbroken to see how hard David was really taking this. He kept running his fingers through David’s hair and hoped David would continue. Eventually, he did.

“I’m going to bury him.” David’s smile was completely humorless. “I’m going to bury him next to his wife. I’ll take the money he left me, fix up the house, pay off the bills in advance if I can so I don’t have to think about it for a while. I’ll finish high school, get a job. I’ll live here and try to be a good person.” He smiled. “If this had happened two months ago, I would’ve taken the money and gone. It’s funny what you’ve done to me, Lucas.”

Lucas leaned down and kissed his forehead. “Yea, well, it certainly wasn’t easy.” He smiled and traced David’s jaw with the tip of one finger.

“Move in.” David said suddenly. “Stay with me.”

Lucas stared down at him, shocked. “David…”

“Please? I know it’s sort of soon, but…”

“I can’t, David.” He said quietly, and David’s mouth shut. “I’m sorry, but things are just getting better with my father, and if I move out now, he’ll think it’s his fault. That he pushed me away. I mean, I did use the moving out threat to get him to keep his job, remember?”

David sat up. “Okay. Fine. Whatever.” He lit a cigarette and kept his back to Lucas. Lucas stared at him, upset and angry by his reaction.

“David-“

“No, it’s fine, I get it.” He sounded like a petulant child, and Lucas wanted to smack him, family tragedy or not.

“Listen, we can work something out.”

“Like what?” David turned to face him, and Lucas saw the panicky, furious look in his eyes. “You stay over on the weekends, and we act like a typical high school couple?” he rolled his eyes. “I don’t think that’s good enough.”

Lucas frowned. “What are you talking about? I wasn’t saying I would just come and stay on weekends, David. Why are you so fucking mad at me?”

David got off the bed and paced for a while, no easy task considering there were books piled up like Dr. Seuss towers all over the place. He kicked one over viciously, sending paperbacks flying. “Just forget it, Lucas, okay?” he muttered finally, smoking like a chimney.

“Hey, no, fuck that, David.” Lucas scooted to the edge of the bed, watching David pace. “What is your problem? Don’t you see that me just packing all my shit up and moving in here is entirely illogical? I’d lose my insurance, not to mention I’d kill my relationship with my father-“

“Oh, so ruining your relationship with me is a better idea?” David snarled.

“What the fuck is the matter with you?” Lucas jumped to his feet, reaching for David, who jerked away from his touch. “You’re acting insane.”

David threw his hands in the air. “You’re such an asshole!”

“How am I an asshole? You’re the one acting like a spoiled brat who just got told he can’t have a fucking pony. You need to calm the fuck down.”

“I am fucking calm!”

“No, you aren’t.” Lucas lunged at him, grabbing him by the shoulders. He expected a fight, maybe to get hit or kicked or hell, bitten. What he didn’t expect was for David to sag against him, all the anger going out of him like a popped balloon. Lucas made him sit down on the bed. “David, you need to relax. You’re kind of scaring me, okay?”

David nodded. “I know. I’m sorry.” He crushed his cigarette out in the ash tray on his night stand and ran his hands through his hair. “I want you to stay with me, Lucas. If you can’t move out of your dad’s fine. But he’s gone all the time. Stay here. Keep some of your stuff there, and keep your address as his. But stay here with me. You can go back there when he’s home for a while, I won’t mind that. But just… please.”

Lucas studied him, his bottom lip caught between his teeth. “Okay, David.” He said softly, and David looked up at him, looking hopeful and guarded. “I’ll stay with you.” He put his arms around David’s neck and rested their foreheads together. “But you’re buying me a car.”

David burst out laughing. “I’m also building you a film lab in the basement.” He told him, and Lucas grinned. “I know you miss your nerdy sci-fi flicks.”

“You liked them, too.”

David made a snorting sound and rolled his eyes. “Please. I only showed up at that crappy theater because the projector guy was fucking hot.” He kissed Lucas. “Thank you.”

“A new car.” Lucas said. “A convertible.”

“Don’t push it.”

Yes, sad, sappy and short. The end. *cackles* Don't worry, the sequel's first chapter will be up by early evening, I'm just doing a little bit of tweaking on it right now. Review! Tell me what you thought! =)
