Chapter 8

"BEEP BEEP BEEP!”

Instantly I’m up and hitting the off button on my alarm clock. This

has to seriously be the first time in who knows when that I actually

wake up without hitting snooze. But can you blame me? I finally get to

see Mya again!

I head to the bathroom and start my transformation from “bed-head,

morning breathe, stumblen’ girl” to “freshly bathed, vanilla-mint

breathe, hottie in a tight shirt girl.” Man, I should get paid to

come up with stuff like that.

So as I’m coming out of the bathroom with a toothbrush in one had and

towel drying my hair in the other, I head to the closet.

‘Hmm,’ I say to myself, ‘what to wear.’ My eyes roam over the

clothes hanging and I spot my favorite pair of jeans. Next mission: a

shirt. White polo. And of course, the chucks.

“Good,” I say as I check the mirror one last time before heading

downstairs for some breakfast.

*******

Like always, I spot Kyle sitting on the curb waiting for me. When I

put the car in park, he walks over and we greet each other.

“Hey homie,” I say as we do our signature hand shake.

“You look very alive this morning,” Kyle says yawning.

“I have good reason to be, Mya's back.” I say as I smile brightly.

He too smiles then says, “I don’t know where Bette and Nicole

are.”

“Eh,” I say as we start to walk to our lockers, “we’ll find

‘em.”

I do the combination to my locker and grab my art book. As I’m

shutting the door, I see Nicole racing up to me with Bette closely

behind.

“Whoa kids, where’s the fire?” I say laughing.

“You guys totally missed it!” Nicole practically shouts while

slightly out of breathe.

“Missed what?” Kyle asks while shutting his locker.

“Brice and Mya! She totally dumped him in the quad. She’s all

‘you’re a no good lying asshole and you’re certainly not worth

anymore of my time. We're done!’” Bette said while trying her best

Mya impersonation. Needless to say, she didn’t come close to the girl

of my dreams. But it was still funny the way she put her hand on her

hip and shook her head for dramatic effect.

“Yeah, and all he could do was stand there like an idiot as she

walked away. Even his friends were shocked. It was classic.” Nicole

added with a smile.

Kyle just looked at me and then back to our other two friends,

“Well,” he said as a small smile formed on his mouth and he looked

at me again, “sounds like this is going to be an interesting day.”

I felt a slight blush come over my face as I smirked. We heard the

bell ring and we separated. The entire walk to art had been silent.

But it was anything but that in my mind.

‘She DUMPED him?! SWEEEEET!!’ I screamed in my thoughts.

Kyle noted the small smile on my face and as we walked into the

classroom, he grabbed my hand and led us next to the newly single girl.

“Kyle! Not again!” I harshly whispered as we got closer.

“What? She’s AVAILABLE now. This is totally the chance you’ve

been waiting for.” He too whispered as we sat.

I rolled my eyes and nervously gave a side glance to see if Mya had

noticed me. She still had her back turned as she spoke with her

friends. We all then heard Mr. Spooner speak.

“Okay class,” he said as he adjusted his glasses, “today I want

you all to draw me a story about your childhood. This means absolutely

NO words. It should be no more then five pages long and contain no

less then ten objects. If you need any help, just ask.”

So with our assignment at hand, the classroom filled with the voices

of students talking and the sounds of pages turning.

“What a weird assignment.” I said to Kyle as I opened my sketchbook.

“Yeah I know.” Mya said turning to me. "What does he expect us to

draw, Power Rangers and Captain Crunch?”

Both Kyle and I looked over at her and started laughing. ‘She is so

adorable.’

“So you watched the Power Rangers, huh? Who was your favorite?” I

ask, still smiling at the beautiful girl in front of me.

“Who do you think? The pink one.” She responds also laughing.

“Never would have guessed.” I say sarcastically. “I do love me

some Captain Crunch, though.”

“Oh me too,” she agrees then playfully taps my leg under the table.

Instantly, my face turns a light shade of red and I turn around. I can

see Kyle of out the corner of my eye with a huge grin on his face.

‘Of course he saw that,’ I say to myself, still blushing a little,

‘he better just keep his mouth shut.’

The rest of the class was spent with everyone working away in their

books. Kyle and I decided to make this as fun as it could be…given

the task at hand. He drew all the superheroes that he loved when he

was a kid. I drew the places I used to loving going to like Disney

Land, the beach, and my uncle’s house.

I looked over to what Mya was drawing. She sketched, what I assume,

was herself when she was little. She was an only child so the two

other people in the drawing were her mom and dad. There was also a dog

and a fish. She drew various stages of her family in different

situations. One would be them having a barbecue; the other was Mya

winning a beauty pageant and her parents with giant smiles on their

faces. It was the cutest thing I’d ever seen someone draw.

“RIIIIING!!!”

And so the end of first period has come. Kyle and I gather our things,

and then proceed out the door. I see Mya walking in the opposite

direction and sigh. ‘See you later, pretty girl.’

When we’re outside the classroom Kyle turns to me and asks, “So who

do you think the first guy to ask Mya out will be?”

I give him an annoyed look then respond with, “why would I want to

guess that?”

“Because you two are like best friends now…I think you should make

your move.” He starts laughing as I ignore his comment.

‘Maybe I should,’ I think to myself as I head to Ms. Kebler’s

classroom. ‘Oh God, no way! What am I thinking?’

“Taylor!” Ms. Kebler greets me as I enter the room.

“Hey Ms. Kebler,” I greet back with a smile.

“So I’m having the class go to the library today and work on their

book reports.”

“Awesome. So what does that mean for me?” I ask still smiling.

Ms. Kebler smiles also and says, “Well that means that WE get to hang

out here and grade tests.”

“Super.” I say sarcastically.

She laughs out loud as the rest of the students fill their chairs and

wait for her to instruct them. She reminds everyone that their reports

are due Friday and that they’ll be in the library all day. Also if

they need help, Mr. Jameson, the librarian, will be there to assist.

Everyone seems pretty happy to be out of the class room and they all

quickly rush out the door.

“Okay,” Ms. Kebler says turning back to me, “let’s get to

work.”

*********

Forty-five minutes and twenty six graded tests later, the bell rings

again.

“Well,” I say standing up and handing her my stack of papers,

“I’d love to say that was fun, but seriously, after that I’m

actually looking forward to my Government test.”

Ms. Kebler laughs while grabbing the papers and says is a mocking

tone, “Welcome to my life.”

‘She’s so awesome,’ I think to myself as I wave goodbye.

So this actually wasn’t the “third period” bell. It was the “15

minute break” bell which only meant one thing to me: SNACK TIME! As I

walk to the vending machine, I spot Bette and Nicole.

“Hey dudes,” I say while reaching into my pocket for some change.

“Yo,” Nicole responds while flipping me a sideways peace sign.

Bette just rolls her eyes and laughs at our friends’ attempt at being

a “gangster.”

“So you guys ready for the lame-o gov test?”

“I am.” Bette says with a broad smile.

“Of course you are,” Nicole says, as it’s now her turn to roll

her eyes, “I forgot to study.”

“Well that sucks for you.” I say laughing while taking a bite of

the Snickers I bought. “I studies LOADS and I’m totally ready to

rock.”

“You studied?” Bette asks with a questioning tone of voice. “You

never study for tests. You’re one of those weirdo-gifted kids who

just ace’s everything without even trying…have I mentioned I hate

you?”

We all start laughing and I retort with, “well for your information,

I was tutoring someone.”

“Who?” Nicole asks as she grabs the candy bar out of my hand and

finishes it.

“Hey!” I complain as she chews up the last bit, “did I say I was

done with that?”

“You didn’t need too. I could just sense it.” She laughs.

“Whatever. You owe me a candy bar.” I say as we walk to class.

“Yeah yeah. So who were you tutoring?”

“Oh um,” I say nervously, “no one special.” It was a lie. Mya

was very special. But I didn’t want them to know. So I lied.

“Well good for you, Taylor. It’s nice to share the smart-wealth.”

Bette chimed in as we took our usual seats.

“Yeah,” Nicole adds with a phony smile and a sarcastic thumbs-up,

“Yay for Taylor.”

I just shake my head as I laugh with my two friends.

“Alright class,” says Mrs. Dominoski as she holds up the test

we’d all been waiting for, “test time.”
