Chapter 8 - Runaway
Author’s Note: I hope that this chapter turns out the way it ought to. I’ve envisioned this scene a lot since I started writing this story, since it’s pivotal to the plot line. I will appreciate all of the reviews I can get… I want to hear what you have to think! Where I take this chapter and the next one will determine the rest of the story line…
Chapter 8 – Runaway
Marni moved fast, not wanting to take a moment longer than absolutely necessary. Although Luke seemed to be out cold at the moment she had no idea how long it would be before he regained consciousness and she wanted to be as far away from this place as possible by then. Running to the door she discovered that he had indeed locked it, but after searching him she found the key.
Her first move was to find Hannah, and she scoured the house until she found her. Marni barely even noticed her surroundings in the adrenaline-filled haze that almost obscured her vision. She knew it was only a matter of time before Luke woke up and she wanted to be, somehow, far away from here.
Now she was running up and down the halls, screaming Hannah’s name, bursting through doors in what seemed like endless passages. She couldn’t believe the size of this house. All of a sudden, her daughter was standing in front of her, framed by a doorway, looking puzzled and concerned. Heedless of how she had grown, Marni scooped her up in her arms. She seemed light as a feather, just then.
“What’s wrong, Mom? Tell me what’s wrong!” Hannah was saying to her. Marni felt numb with joy, numb with fear.
“We have to get out of here. As fast as we can.” She wiped tears out of her eyes that she didn’t realize she had shed and dragged Hannah behind her, trying to resume the pace she had been going. Hannah resisted.
“Mom, what are you talking about? You need rest… that’s what the doctor said, and anyway… Luke got me all of this cool stuff, you should see it!” Hannah was tugging her the other way, back toward the room she had come from.
Marni growled to herself and then let go of her daughter. “Ugh! I don’t have time for this!” she said, completely disgusted. “Luke is a bad man. I don’t care what it is that he’s gotten you, we’re leaving here right now.” Her voice didn’t leave any room for protest. Marni grabbed Hannah’s hand again and lead her down what she thought was the exit.
“You’re going the wrong way…” Hannah finally said to her, in a “know-it-all” sort of voice. Marni didn’t have to turn around to know that she was rolling her eyes at her.
“Fine, you lead. Get us out of here and fast.”
Hannah took off like a shot and Marni did her best to follow her. The older woman realized that she was mistaken about the size of the house and chalked it up to her original panic. “You wouldn’t happen to know where he keeps his car keys, do you?” she finally called to her daughter, panting.
“No, sorry,” she called back. She had led them to one of the outside doors and soon Marni was in the sunlight again. The main house was up ahead but Marni didn’t think she had time to search the house for the keys to the car. She would have to take advantage of the woods and make it on foot. Calling the police first wasn’t out of the question, though, and so she jogged up to the front steps and tried the door. It was locked. She searched for a key but was unable to find one. Panic started creeping in again and she realized that the woods were her only chance. It would have to work; they would have to get away.

When Luke came to it only took him a few seconds to get his bearings back and realize what had happened. The door was open, mocking him, and he ran in pursuit of his captives.
Out in the open he ran first for his house, finding the key in the special hiding place he put it, and ran inside for his car keys. Inside his car was a tranquilizer gun and some refills. Luke hoped that it wouldn’t come to that, but he had been prepared for something like this happening.
He started up the engine and it roared to life, then he steered toward the woods. He figured that Marni and Hannah were probably sticking close to the road while staying in the shelter of the trees. Trying to go through the woods blind would lead them nowhere, and he didn’t think that Marni would be that stupid. He remembered that Marni had been wearing a dull green shirt and Hannah had been in a bright pink outfit he had just gotten for her that day. He kept his eyes peeled for even a hint of pink, and a few minutes later he found them.
He put the car in park and got out, following at a safe distance, not wanting to let them on to his presence. They were slowing down, it seemed, and Marni was being bogged down by Hannah. Soon they were well within shooting range, and he made an effort to try to mask his footfalls. Marni had started looking around after them, and soon she was egging Hannah back into a fast jog. Luke signed to himself but followed. Like he had suspected, they were following the road.
There was a stream up ahead, though they didn’t know it, and it was wide and steep enough that their best bet would be to go over the small bridge rather than to try to cross the stream themselves. Luke readjusted his path to intercept the road while still keeping his two targets in sight. He watched as they came upon the stream and watched them start to descend into the steep valley it made. Perhaps he had been wrong? With wet shoes and clothing they would tire sooner.
As he crept closer to the bridge he saw them pass underneath it, crossing to the other side and starting to climb out. Then Hannah turned and spotted him. She could only get out a cry of “Mom!” before he had his tranquilizer gun steadied and shot off a round, straight at Marni.
It hit her in her back, close to her hip. He was worried that he might have done some harm to her, but he couldn’t think about that right now. He reloaded as he ran, and he saw Marni slide down the bank on her stomach. Hannah was torn between going and staying, but as he approached she let her instinct take over and ran.
Luke contemplated letting her run off and to retrieve Marni, but he decided against it. There were miles for her to go before she hit any civilization, but if something were to happen to her, he would never be able to win Marni over. He took aim and shot, and the girl fell with a small dart in her leg, clutching at it as she passed out.
