Bodyguard: Josh- 0006

Chapter Six

-Bodyguard-
~Josh~

The girls were agitated. I could tell because Erynh’s body nearly thrummed with tension. Her eyes glimmered with eyebright, and the green of her eyes was swallowed by the gold glitter of her Wolf form. She pressed her cheek against mine, a clear sign that she needed comfort. She hated the stubble of my beard pressing against her face, but she, like all lycanthropes, needed physical contact when upset. She pressed her entire body against the length of mine. She sighed softly and turned her face away from me when I tried to catch her gaze. She was admitting nothing to me. Only her body gave lie to her façade.

Sometimes she made me get like this- introspective and sentimental. Worried. It was only around her. I was her personal bodyguard, but her mental state was also my responsibility. I needed to take care of her. It was my job.

My privilege.

Yet she refused to acknowledge her need for me. In this alone was she independent and strong- refusing aid from anyone except Eryka. And now she was silently begging me for help, yet refusing it at the same time. Why was she so frightened? What did she know?

I looked over at her, at the curve of her cheek and the fall of dark hair just brushing the bottom of her chin as she turned her face even more resolutely away from my gaze.
I was desperately trying to focus on helping her, on making her calm again, the way we all needed to be for this meeting, but it was really hard when she was pressing against me and looking remarkably beautiful… for a Remesian princess.

Suddenly she glanced at me, eyes silver and gold with agitation, and tucked her head under my chin.

“Princess?”

“Guard my body, Joshua laValian, and guard your thoughts. Things are going to go badly here. I know they will.”

And with that cryptic comment, she pulled completely away, setting down again beside Eryka, without so much as a glance my way to see if the blush had vanished from my face.
Great, she’d heard that thought about her being beautiful.

“Smooth, lover boy,” Tyler said, snickering in my mind. “Excellent way to woo a girl.”

“Unlike you, I’m not trying to woo anyone, so butt out.”

Erynh glanced my way at that last thought, and I wondered if she heard me, because, for just a second, her face had shown hurt and confusion before she turned away again to watch the show about to unfold.
