Detective Lucas Cain stood still looking at Miranda Dawson's body lying strapped to the hospital bed. She had been found in her apartment next to the lifeless corpse of what appeared to be her lover. Miranda had immediately been taken to the hospital. The doctor's weren't quite sure what happened to her. She had started to thrash and kick when they tried removing her from the bed, yet she remained unconscious. This was why the restraints were necessary. They couldn't calm her down until the sedative had kicked in. After the coroner was through at the scene, the body of the man was taken to the morgue.
Lucas sighed. What was going on? How did a girl barely the size of Randi survive the fall with no broken bones or death? Why was Randi sick in bed with a dead man, whose cause of death couldn't be found? And another thing, why wasn't she with her foster parents? Rose and Michael Andrews lived in Tennessee, how was Miranda in Oregon? She wasn't old enough to be living on her own.
"Don't concentrate on her too hard, Lucas." his partner, Aiden Monroe said. Lucas jumped slightly as she came up behind him. "How come this girl suddenly has all of your attention?" Aiden asked him.
"I don't know." Lucas shook his head. "She just does. I swear I've seen her somewhere before. I just can't place it."
"Maybe it's because you've been standing here for close to an hour." Aiden said. She looked into the room in time to see a nurse walk in and take down the IV bag. Randi moved on the bed her eyes starting to open.
"Show time." Lucas said. He and Aiden went into the room. The nurse smiled at them both and carefully took the IV needle out of Randi's arm. Aiden and Lucas pulled up chairs to sit by the bed. Using the nurses help, Randi was able to sit up once the restraints were removed.
"Miranda, do you know why you're here?" Aiden asked softly.
"No. I was at my house sleeping." Aiden looked over at Lucas. "What happened, just tell me." Randi said, getting worried.
"Do you know a Faye Johnson?" Lucas asked. Miranda nodded. She knew that the girl who had been with Daniel was named Faye but she had never really met her before.
"She was thrown from your balcony this morning." Randi's eyes grew wide.
"Is she alright?" Randi asked almost sure she knew the answer.
"She'll be fine. Nothing serious happened to her. Just a few cuts and bruises." Aiden reassured her. Randi let out a relieved breath. She could have started crying. Even though she had just barely met Faye the night before, she felt compelled to care for her as though she'd known her all her life.
"Theres also the matter about the young man with you." Lucas said.
"Excuse me, Detectives. There's a call for Detective Monroe." another nurse said coming into the room.
"I'll be back in a few minutes." Aiden told them.
"Are you talking about Edward? We were both sleeping. Where is he?" Randi asked almost angrily.
"Downstairs,"
"So he's alright?"
"In the morgue." Lucas finished. All the remaining color drained from Randi's face.
"No, he's not dead. I would know if he was dead." she told him desperately. He couldn't be dead! He couldn't!
"I'm sorry, Miranda. We found him dead beside you when we entered your apartment. " Randi shook her head violently.
"Lucas, I need to see you, now." Aiden said from the doorway.
"I'll be right back." he told Randi. Randi couldn't move. She would know, would be able to feel if Edward was really dead. She watched as Lucas left the room and went down the hallway. Randi got out of the bed and searched for her clothes and couldn't find them. Just great. It hurt a little to be up and walking. Her body wasn't used to it. She stood by the door and caught the middle of the detective's conversation.
"So the Andrews said that they would catch the next flight to come get her?" Lucas asked almost suspiciously. Aiden nodded.
"Apparently she was kidnapped last year and the police never found her or her kidnappers." Her foster parents were coming here? But they were the ones who had hired the kidnappers! She couldn't stay here. She had to get out of here. Making sure that neither Aiden or Lucas was looking, Randi walked out of her room and headed for the stairs. She knew it wouldn't take long for them to realize she was gone. What she had to do was get some clothes and find Edward.
It was dark. There was no room to move. Edward knew that he was locked up. He just didn't know why.
Randi.
Where was she? And where was he? He lay perfectly still and tried to feel for her. She was terrified and panicking. It made Edward panic. He slammed his arms against the cold metal of his prison. They didn't budge. He kicked his feet, trying to trying through. Finally, something gave at his feet. A lock had snapped in two and a small door opened. Edward began slide himself out of the confined space and what ever he was laying on moved forward. He slid out into the bright light of the room.
Edward immediately sat up. He was in a morgue. And he didn't have any clothes, just a sheet. Great. He tore the gat from his toe away and climbed off the table. He pushed the table back into the crypt and shut the door. Now he needed clothes. Where was he supposed to find clothes?
He walked out of the room making sure the sheet was securely wrapped around him. Heading down the hallway, and thankful no one was around, spotted a hamper along the wall. He rummaged around finding a pair of pants and a shirt. He'd just have to go barefoot for now.
Edward collapsed to his knees. Randi needed help. Now. He picked himself back up and headed for the stairs.
"Stop now!" a police officer shouted. Randi slowed down long enough to turn her head to look at him. He had his gun out and pointed her. She dropped down as the shot rang out. The bullet bit into the wall above her. People screamed, scared they were going to be shot. Randi scrambled back up and went around the corner as another bullet went into the wall.
Randi could hear the footsteps of the officer behind her. "Edward!" she screamed, knowing he would hear her and that he wasn't dead. She had believe that he was alive.
Edward rounded the corner at the other end of the hall. He was being chased by doctors. He snapped his head up at hearing Randi's voice. The cop came running behind her.
"Stop!" ye helled. He pulled the trigger again. Edward suddenly became angry. He bared his teeth and growled. Randi jumped to her feet and kept running until she ran into Edward's arms. He held her tightly for a fraction of a second. He could hear the trigger about to be pulled. He swung her around so that his back was to the gun. Two bullets were fired back to back, both coming to a stop in Edward's back. Randi yelled out his name as she was pressed into Edward's body. Edward jerked when the bullets hit him. He was momentarily stung.
Randi cried out. She could feel his pain as if it were her own. Edward over came the shock and picked Randi up. He started running for the stairway. He pushed through the door and descended the stairs.
"Officer, drop your weapon or I will make you drop it!" Randi vaguely heard Monroe shout.
Edward slammed through the last door and out onto the side walk. Detective Cain was standing there, pointing his gun at Edward's face in the moonlight.
"Put her down. Slowly." Lucas ordered.
"I can't do that. I'm sorry." Edward told him.
"I saw you at her house, you're supposed to be dead."
"Not hardly." Edward said.
"I will shoot you if you do not put her down." Edward slowly turned around, showing Lucas his back.
"Try it. The first two didn't do their job. Maybe the third one will." Lucas didn't move. His eyes were locked on the bullet holes in Edward's back. Then there was nothing. Randi and Edward were gone. Vanished into the thin air. Lucas cursed himself and lowered his gun.
Edward stopped running when they were a good distance from the hospital. He let Randi stand on her own two feet. She swayed slightly. Edward held her face gently in his hands.
"Are you alright?" he asked softly. Randi nodded.
"I think so." her eyes were suddenly huge. "They shot you!" she said on the edge of panic. Edward smiled a laughed, a deep, rich sound. It made Randi warm down to her toes. He turned around to show her his back. There were two bloody holes in his shirt, but his skin was perfectly smooth. Randi reached out and ran her fingertips down his back.
"I heal very quickly. Don't worry about me." he said turning around "It's you that I'm worried about. You don't feel sick do you?" he asked.
"No. I feel better than yesterday." she told him.
"Do you know why we were at the hospital?" Edward asked her. She nodded.
"Someone was thrown from my- Faye!" she practically shouted. "We have to go back and get her. We can't leave her there."
"Hang on, tell me what happened." She told him everything the detectives had told her, even about his supposable death. Edward smiled at her and took her hand. He pressed his fingers where his pulse should have been.
"You mean...you're really dead?" she asked.
"In a sense. I'll explain it all to you later. Right now we need to find Daniel and come up with a way to break Faye out of the hospital." He entwined his fingers with hers and began to look for Daniel.
