Chapter Thirty One
Chapter Thirty One
Thirty minutes later
“Eighty-five bottles of blood on the wall, eighty-five bottles of blood! Take one down, pass it around, eight four bottles of blood on the wall-”
Rowan quickly turned around when Ayden suddenly stopped. “What-?” Kalena was sitting calmly cleaning her nails with her knife and Ayden was cupping himself whimpering. “Kalena?”
“What? I used the blunt end.”
Rowan sighed turning around. /Someone isn’t going to survive this trip./ she sent to Garret.
/They aren’t going to kill each other./
/No, but if the fighting continues I might./
/Remember, it was your idea to take her./
/Bite me./
/Not while I’m driving,/ he smirked. Rowan rolled her eyes but reached out and took Garret’s hand. He shifted slightly so he could comfortably hold her hand and safely hold the wheel. He rested her hand on his thigh and his hand over hers tracing intricate designs on her skin absently as they drove.
Four hours later
“Let’s stop,” Garret said pulling into the parking lot of a diner that was across the street from a forest. “Kalena, you can get something to eat, and we can go hunt.”
“Okay,” Kalena said although she didn’t look pleased over the notion of them feeding.
“I fed last night,” Ayden said. “Angela and I will accompany you.”
“What?” Angela asked as Ayden drug her away. Garret took Rowan’s hand and led her into the woods.
“And where exactly are you taking me?” she asked.
“I plan on taking you deep into the forest where I can ravish you properly.”
“Uh-huh,” Rowan smiled as he moved a branch aside for her to duck under it. Rowan was thankful that it was winter. There were vines and briars everywhere. The forest would be next to impossible to navigate in the middle of summer. “Do I get a say in this?”
“It’s torture, you know, sitting so close to you all day and not being able to kiss you, touch you, or anything.”
“I actually do know what you mean,” Rowan told him. “But where exactly are we going? I could just have the deer come to us.”
“I’m not entirely positive.” He stopped walking once they reached a small clearing and pulled her into his arms. “I love you.” She smiled up at him and kissed him quickly. “Do you think we’ll survive this trip?”
“No,” Rowan grinned. “But Ayden will be the first to go.”
“Hey, that’s my best friend you’re talking about killing. Annoying as he is.” He stepped away and stretched. “Let’s feed. The others are probably wondering what’s taking us so long.”
“No,” Rowan said. “The others probably think they know what’s taking us so long. All the more reason to hurry.” Rowan closed her eyes and soon a pair of does came out of a thicket. Rowan stroked her doe’s neck to calm her before biting down.
Immediately, her mind was filled with images of the wild. This was why she never fed from humans if offered the choice. When you took someone’s blood you couldn’t help but see some of their thoughts. It was a beautiful experience with animals but she always felt like a voyeur when she fed from a human. Rowan pulled away at the same time as Garret. He looked refreshed; his skin had the healthy glow of someone in a lotion ad.
“Ready?” she asked.
“Mmm… not quite,” his said, the look on his face was still quite predatory.
She took a step back. “You just said that the others might be worried.”
“Let them.”
“Garret?”
“What? I’ve missed you and I’d like the chance to kiss my girlfriend.” He strode over to her side and pulled her back into his arms. Rowan looked up into his eyes and he smirked lowering his head to hers. Their lips met and Rowan pressed herself closer. “I love you,” he murmured into the kiss. Rowan deepened the kiss. They fell back against a tree.
Rowan pulled away reluctantly and stepped back. “Okay, now that that’s over with.”
“Hey! I think I’m offended.”
“Just think?” she asked then shrugged. “Well, that’s okay then.”
“No,” he said pouting. “Now you have to make it up to me.”
“Ha!”
“Now that really hurts. You really have to make it up to me now.”
“Poor baby,” she hugged him. “Okay, let’s go.”
“You have to work harder than that.” She laughed and stepped close so her body was touching his. She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him lightly. She reached up and brushed some hair away from his face before letting her hand rest on his shoulder.
“I love you,” she told him.
“Do we have to go back?” he murmured lowering his head to kiss her again.
“Yes. We need to get back on the road.” He sighed but stepped back, taking her hand and leading her out of the forest. Kalena was sitting on the hood of the car laughing at something Ayden was saying. Angela was filing her nails looking bored.
“It’s about damn time,” Ayden exclaimed. “What exactly were you two doing out there, huh?”
“Ayden, shut up.”
“One day I will stop talking. Then you’ll be sorry,” Ayden pouted.
“No,” Garret smirked. “Then I’ll throw a huge party.”
“You’re so mean. I need a hug.” To Rowan’s surprise Kalena hugged him.
“Let’s go,” Garret said. Everyone piled into car. The rest of the drive was uneventful, which surprised everyone. When they got to the hotel where they’d be staying the three in the back seat had fallen asleep. “How are we doing the rooms?” Garret asked.
“I thought about that,” Rowan said perking up. “You and Ayden should share, Kalena and I will share, and put Angie by herself.”
“Why do you insist upon calling her that?”
“The same reason she calls me a child every chance that she gets.”
Garret reached out gently grasping her chin. /You know that I would never pick her or anyone over you, right?/
/I know, that doesn’t mean I have to like her./
He smiled. /Fair enough./ “Guys, we’re here.” Groggily, the others got out. We got our bags from the trunk and headed into the hotel. Garret ordered three rooms and handed out the keys.
“You sure you don’t want to room with me?” Ayden asked Kalena causing her to roll her eyes.
The next evening
The group got ready to go a couple hours before sundown. They were all sitting in the Rowan and Kalena’s room with their things when Ayden stretched. “Well, I have to go hunt. Rowan, you want to make it easier?”
Rowan closed her eyes. “There’s a buck slumbering in a thicket half a mile from the hotel in the woods North of here. He’ll wait for you.”
Now Angela looked furious. “I’m going to go hunt too.”
“Do you want-” Rowan started.
“Don’t even ask me that, child. I can hunt on my own.” She left slamming the door behind her.
Rowan frowned. “This time I was trying to be nice. What’d I do?”
“I think it was me,” Ayden admitted with a rueful smile. “She’s probably pissed that I asked you and not her. Even though her range wouldn’t reach the outdoors. I’d better go. I’ll meet you guys at the car.” Kalena came in from her shower.
“Well, I’m ready.” As Angela and Ayden hunted they gathered up all their stuff and carried it down the stairs. Ayden was sitting on the hood of the car lounging back on the window. Garret tossed a bag at him which Ayden caught without opening his eyes.
“You’re still a terrible throw,” he commented, hopping off the hood.
“Yeah?” Garret asked arching an eyebrow and holding a knife up. “Care to test that theory?”
Ayden grinned spreading his arms. “Bring it on.”
“Stop it,” Rowan said.
“But he started it, mommy,” Ayden pouted.
“Never call me that again,” Rowan shuddered. Kalena grabbed the knife from Garret.
“Mine,” she said putting it in her ankle sheath.
“That one wasn’t-”
Kalena shrugged. “No, but it is now.” Angela came back. Her auburn hair was tousled. She was breathtaking, Rowan noticed with a sigh. The self-assured look she wore said that she knew it. She hopped into the car as the others finished loading it up.
