Chapter 8
The week before the fight I stake out the warehouse where the master’s lair is. I have been doing it all night and I have not seen a thing other than some vampires go out for an evening snack. For this week I am keeping a low profile to knock them off track and then attack on the full moon. I see Veronica exit the building with Moric; they turn to each other embrace and kiss. They seem to be in love. I close my eyes to the scene in front of me. A mortal and vampire in love! It is possible but it is very rare to see it. Mostly it is a vampire obsessed with a mortal so much that the vampire must possess the mortal. It is their one thing in their life until they either have the mortal or the mortal dies. What the master wants is to prove to the other hunters that he can bring one of them over at anytime he wishes. Veronica starts to talk to Moric. I put up a satellite dish like device up.
"I still can not believe he wants her. Even with the story you have told me. Why go through all of the trouble for a girl that will not love him?" Veronica asks. Moric takes her hand and walks to a small bench and sits down and pulls her in to his lap.
"He saw something in her that is different from him, from my kind. He sees light and innocence where with us there is darkness and corruption. That is why he wants her. I want you because I fell in love with you from the first moment I saw you." Moric says pulling her closer.
"When can you and I be one finally?" She asks.
"At the end of the week. Then you and I will be together for all eternity." He says. "Lets get you inside it is chilly out here and I do not want to get you sick." He gets up and carries her back in to the warehouse.
At that minute I get my plan together. I gather my stuff quickly and head straight for the tattoo parlor. I enter in through a back door. I walk in to a room where Mornick is bending over a piece of equipment. "Hey I have a plan on how to get the girl out safely."
"How is that?" He asks looking up. I see that he is working on a crossbow.
"Vampire have to sleep at the high point of the sun so I go in grab her at that time." I say sitting down on a stool in front of him.
"She is probably ready to become a vampire even as we speak." He says returning to his work.
"I use to work for this police department and I know a few people who still owe me some favors in the morgue." I say. "I will show her what being a vampire really means. Having to kill poor innocent souls to feed you. I do not think it will take long to bring her back."
"Sounds like a good plan to me." He says. "Finished. This cross bow needs no reloading." He points to the strain of arrows.
"Vampire machine gun. I like it." I say walking out of the room. "I have some phone calls to make. I will talk to you later." I walk in to the other room and take out my cell phone. I wait a minute. "Yes can I talk to Dr. Morgan please? Thank you." I wait. "Hey Jack how are you? That’s great. I need to call in one of my favors. Do you have any bodies that have come up dead but it is very weird like bite wounds not animalistic." There is a pause. "Good I have a girl that wants to be come a hooker and I want to show her that. I will be around at about one o'clock. Thanks see you then." I hang up the phone and re-enter the room. "Done. I think my being a cop really helps with this job."
"Why?" He asks.
"Well for one I am good at staking out buildings and two my connections." I say and get a towel thrown at me.
"Ok Colombo give me a hand." He says and we work on the weapons together until dawn when he has to open the store. I go in to a back room and crash on the cot that he set up for me because of my late nights and fall again in to a dreamless sleep.
A few hours later I am awaken by a crash near me. I grab my stake and jump to a good position to strike the person in the room dead. Mornick is standing next to the box that he purposely dropped. "Good morning sleepy."
"I could have killed you." I say getting up and grabbing the blanket and wrapping it around me. I walk over to his small kitchen and get a cup of coffee black.
"I know but I wanted to see what your reaction would be and I liked it. You had better get going. The sun is almost at its peak and you have something to do this morning." He says leaving the room so I can change. I walk out and leave for the warehouse.
