Part 8

Inside the Haunted

Part 8

---------------------------------

“You’re a part of my soul?” I asked Emily softly. She nodded.

“But…I didn’t even realize it. And I didn’t even know who you were until I came onto the Seahawk.” I protested. Emily shrugged.

“So? You’re a force of good. I could sense you coming here and I put my powers into this locket so you would be protected. I knew what might happen, and I knew you were the only one who could stop ‘Him’ from stealing souls.” She said. I nodded, letting it all sink in.

“But you know what the weird thing is Madigan?” Emily asked me suddenly. I shook my head and waited for her to answer.

“It’s like I’ve known you my whole life.” She said.

“What? That’s crazy. You’ve only been possessing me for the past couple of days.” I said. She shook her head and my eyes grew wide.

“I was possessing your parents while you were growing up. I was ordered by ‘Him’ to persuade them to come to the Seahawk so I could kill them so he could have their souls.” She said. I stared at her, too hurt to say anything.

-----------------------------------

Finally, I found my voice again.

“So it’s your fault that my parents are dead.” I said

“No Madigan! It’s not like that!” Emily protested.

“Then what is it like?” I asked her.

“You know what ‘He’ does. He makes me do that to people. I HAD to possess your parents and kill them. I felt awful about them leaving you behind so before their bodies disappeared, I put a drop of blood from each of them on the locket, and that’s what protects you, along with me.” Emily explained. I still wasn’t 100% forgiving of Emily.

“Fine. I believe you.” I said sharply, cutting her off when she tried to talk.

“Madigan, don’t be angry with me, please.” Emily begged.

“Okay, I won’t if you can tell me this: Who is ‘He’ going to make you kill next?” I asked her. Emily stared at me.

“That’s not fair. I don’t know. ‘He’ just makes me do it and then I possess their body and kill them.” Emily said. I crossed my arms.

“Gee, some help you are.” I said crossly. Emily sighed.

“Well, I guess there’s no changing your mind.” Emily said. Then, with a flash of light, she disappeared. Even though I was a little glad that she was gone, I still feared for everyone inside the ship. I ran inside, ignoring the protests raging inside of my head.

--------------------------------------------

“Bernie! Gus! Charlie! Where are you guys?” I shouted around the main hallway. This was the spot where I was almost squished to death. A shiver went down my spine at the thought and I went down a different hall to be safe from “Him”. I grabbed the locket and held it tightly in my hands when I heard a noise behind me. The lights in this hallway were dimly lit and I could hardly see the floor in front of me, let alone my two feet.

“Hello? Is anyone there? Anybody?” I shouted, cupping my hands around my mouth and making my voice sound louder than usual. Where were they? I couldn’t hear any kind of movement except for the distant sound of the sea behind me. That was the only comforting sound besides my pounding heart. I laughed at myself, realizing how scared I was about nothing.

“Man, I am such a loser. I’m getting worked up over nothing. It’s just a dark hallway on a haunted ship and there’s no one here…” somehow, I was expecting that comment to comfort me, but all it did was make me twice as nervous and scared.

--------------------------------------------------

I swear I’ve been here before. I know I have. I’ve past that stain of blood on the walls at least six times.

“Oh great! I’m lost!” I shouted, kicking my black boots against the wall. I gasped in pain for my big toe. So, hopping up and down on my right leg, I looked around. Was it just me, or were all the hallways starting to look the same? I groaned and put my left foot gingerly back on the ground and held my head in my hands.

“How could I get lost?” I asked myself. I heard a footstep behind me…then two, coming faster and faster with each step in my direction.

“WHO’S THERE?!” I screamed loudly, raising my fists. The footsteps immediately stopped, then started running the other way.

“Hey! Come back here!” I said, sprinting after them.

“Madigan?” the voice said. I ran into the person, realizing that they had stopped. I recognized it as Charlie’s voice.

“Charlie? What in the world are you doing?” I asked him, holding my hand to my heart to make it stop pounding so hard.

“Well, I sort of got lost…. pathetic isn’t it?” he asked me, smiling.

“Uh yeah, but I’m lost too. Why don’t we try to make it back to Gus’ boat together?” I asked him.

“Sounds good.” He said, looping his arm through mine.

“You lead.” He said, and I nodded. I started to walk, dragging him behind me.

“C’mon Charlie, walk faster.” I said gruffly, pulling his arm.

“I’m coming, I’m coming. I’m just a little tired is all.” He said. Then, with a chill down my spine, the lights went out and I heard a maniacal laugh, one that I recognized.

---------------------------------------------

I gasped.

“Charlie! We have to leave now!” I said.

“Why?” he asked stupidly. What a moron…duh.

“Because! ‘He’ is here!” I said, looking around in the darkness. I couldn’t see a thing. I got no reply from Charlie and I stretched my arm down to touch him, but he wasn’t there.

“CHARLIE! WHERE ARE YOU?!” I shouted, scared out of my mind. Finally, I got a reply.

“MADIGAN! HELP ME!” he screamed down the hall. How had he gotten so far away from me so fast? Well duh, it was “Him”.

“LET MY FRIEND CHARLIE GO!” I demanded of “Him”. In response, I got that laugh again.

“He is at my mercy now, and I believe I shall call the shots Madigan, not you.” The voice said. A sudden strong wind came down the hall and sent my body to shivering. The wind got stronger and stronger and I couldn’t fight it anymore. This was it, Charlie was going to die as I was fighting this stupid wind…

“No please! Have mercy!” I heard Charlie scream over the howling wind. Then, there was silence and the wind died down.

“Charlie! Are you there?” I shouted, running down the hall, watching for blood on the walls from “Him”.

“Yeah…” I heard him whisper. He was okay!

“Charlie where are you? I can’t see you anywhere!” I said.

“…I know.” He whispered. Okay…he was definitely acting weird.

------------------------------------------------

“Charlie, are you sure you’re okay?” I asked him.

“Well, you know Madigan, maybe I’m not. I need some help.” He said. What the heck?

“Okay…” I said. I walked into a hand hanging down from the ceiling and I screamed.

“Madigan, it’s me!” he said. He was stretching down, waiting for me to grab his arms. I reached up and pulled him down and he fell to the ground with a thump. He stood up slowly and faced me. There was a knife sticking out of his chest and I screamed once more.

“CHARLIE!” He slowly stepped towards me, his arm outstretched.

“Come here Madigan, I want to give you a hug…” he said, blood dripping down the front of him.

“Get away from me!” I screeched, pushing him away. I sprinted down the dark hall, tripping over pieces of plywood and snags in the carpet. I finally fell over and smacked my face against the floor once again. Unfortunately, there was a nail sticking out of the floor and it scratched the side of my face.

“Oww…” I said, wiping the cut. It was really deep and there was blood gushing from it. I was too preoccupied to notice that Charlie was standing there right next to me.
