Just About Soccer

Chapter 8

Ray did not drive too fast, since he had no intention of arriving out of breath and sweating.
He got off his bike at ten to twelve and did not see Brian yet, so he wandered around a bit.
The very second his watch chimed midnight a soft tap on his back made his heart stop.

“Hey Ray. You had to wait long?”

“Nope, you’re right on time.”

They stood in the dim light of the street lamp and two untold secrets lay between them. The younger blond looked up at Ray and frowned. He did not know what to say. The brunette looked incredibly gorgeous.

Ray could not help staring at Brian, who suddenly appeared fragile and vulnerable. Adding to the effect were the questioning eyes. He wore his soccer shorts and a tight top and Ray’s gaze drifted off to his shoulders. He had to suppress the urge to touch the soft skin and suddenly it hit him like lightning.

“You look good, Ray” Brian smiled, even though his opposite was unaware of it.

“I love you, too” was Ray’s answer to a long-ago-made statement of Brian instead.

Brian stared at him blankly. Was he dreaming?

“Are you sure?”

“Sure I’m sure!” Ray grinned and finally his resistance broke and he pulled Brian closer by his shoulders and kissed him.

It was a deep and longing kiss. One of the kind that made you feel like drowning in or melting into a happy oblivion. The streets were deserted around them and almost silent. Only the typical summer’s night birds audibly made sure everybody knew they were there. The scenery was close to perfect and that brought Brian back to the question about why they had met at this rather unusual time.

He broke the kiss and Ray reluctantly stood back a bit.

“What’s wrong?”

“Why did you want to meet at midnight?”

Ray wanted to be honest.

“My parents must not know I’m here”

“Why?”

“Let’s just… sit down somewhere, okay?”

In front of the back entrance to the school, there was a grassy hillock from where people sometimes watched them play soccer and that is where they went. Brian made sure to sit as close to Ray as possible. He was a little scared of the dark and especially with a gloomy and unwelcoming school building in front of him.

“You don’t like the dark?” Ray guessed when they were as close as possible.

“I do like it... But still it scares me”

Ray smiled and then told Brian about his dad’s outburst. He intentionally left out the part with his mother.

“I’m sorry,” Brian whispered and then reached up to kiss Ray.

“I’ll find a way to come here anyway”

“But… Only be careful, okay?”

“Sure. So… Now it’s your turn to tell me what’s bothering you”

“You didn’t forget”

“Of course not!”

Ray wrapped his arm around Brian and smiled at him. “You sounded really bad on the phone. How could I forget?”

“Alright… You remember we were talking about my parents and whether they knew about me being gay?” His tone was strained and uneasy.

“Affirmative”

Brian chuckled. “Stop that, it’s serious”

“And still I could make you smile. Take it easy.”

“Fine… I have a problem to put it simple. They have my future planned and there are grandchildren appearing in them, as well as me being a lawyer, doctor or successful broker. I myself have no plans whatsoever to be either one of those nor do I want children, which is also rather complicated considering my sexual preferences. There you go.”

“Where do you picture yourself in future time?”

“On the pitch, playing for some really great club in Italy or Spain or Germany, or maybe in Britain even. I know I’m almost too old to make it, but still…”

His eyes lightened up and he expectantly looked up at the older one.

“I think you can do that. Honestly”

Now Brian looked down and started playing with some violet flower. There was more to it.

“You know, Ray… I already got an offer for the club of the biggest town nearby. And from there you can get almost everywhere since they’ve got one match each year where there are all the scouts watching, you see?”

“You already got it? That’s great! Have you told the others?”

“Of course not!” Brian looked horrified. “They would hate me if I left the team and I still have to go to this school for an entire year!”

“But that club cannot wait for an answer from you until the end of term!”

“Actually… They wanted me to decide and discuss it with my parents until Monday next week”

“Wha … I guess you haven’t yet told your parents?”

“No.”

It was cruel to see Brian in this state of torture and Ray pressed his lips together as he always did when he was thoroughly thinking things over. The answer is easy my friend, he told himself and when he tried to contemplate the situation he suddenly found everything washed from his mind by Brian fiercely pushing him down on his back for a deep and hungry kiss.

Ray was too glad to give in and for a while, he let the smaller one dominate until he decided it was his turn again. He angled his head a little to be more comfortable on the rough ground and determinedly slowed down the pace, eliciting a sound of irritation from Brian. Ray intensified the kiss on a qualitative level and smiled inwardly at the other one’s lacking patience. He pulled him down on himself only to roll over the next second, burying Brian’s smaller body under his, and the sad face under a cascade of light and never too long, teasing kisses.

It drove Brian mad to feel his lover’s lips fly over his skin and not be able to capture them into a real kiss. Still it sent one shiver after another down his spine, causing him to moan silently. He abruptly brought his hands up to Ray’s face to hold him still. The dark, long strands of his hair tickled Brian’s cheeks whilst covering the deep, intelligent eyes of the older one. Brian softly pushed them away and they locked gazes for some moments.

“I can’t believe how beautiful you are”, Brian whispered in total devotion and Ray congratulated himself for his excellent styling until he noticed that his hair was totally out of place, now that Brian had his hands entangled in it. Maybe the girls had been right and he looked best in the morning after getting up and ruffling his hair. He could not care less now and bent lower to nibble at Brian’s lips again.

Brian pulled Ray’s face down in a long and slow kiss even though this was not the way he liked it most. It thrilled him tremendously but he liked to keep his senses together, especially in such a public place. Still it was the older one with the talent of taking it slow and intensive.

Brian wondered how far Ray’s commitment into his bisexuality went and provokingly put his hands firmly on the waistband of the brunette’s jeans. As to be expected, Ray stopped the kiss and looked down on the expectant one beneath him. The streetlamps still reached them in this place and there was enough light for Ray to determine the smile on Brian’s lips. He was testing the waters.

Ray had not thought more than about kissing and was not sure about how to react. His heart skipped a beat when Brian pushed his hands inside his jeans and his body started to react to the touch in a rapidly growing way. Brian reached up to kiss him shyly and Ray’s strength began to fade.
How was that possible? How could the younger one have such big power through such little action? His arms gave in and he now he did not support his weight with his hands anymore but with his elbows that brought Brian’s face much closer.

“Stop,” Ray commanded.

With a quick last kiss he forced himself to roll off Brian.

“What’s wrong?” the blond boy asked fearfully.

“Did I do something wrong…“

“No, it was just fine. Just never yet…actually… physically… feel attracted to boys as well”

“Still feeling odd about it?”

“You could say so”

“How long have you had no sex?”

Well, okay, that question was a surprise, indeed.

“Awhile now, why you asking?”

Brian giggled girlishly and said in a low voice, “You seemed a little desperate”

Ray was thankful they were having this unpleasant conversation because it was cooling him down.

~

They lay spread-eagled on the grass, looking up in the clear black summer night sky and Ray decided (‘Okay,’ he thought, ‘you probably cannot decide that, so let’s say admit…’) that he allowed himself to love a man. What would his family or friends say? So when Brian asked him if he would like to come home with him for the night, he gladly accepted. They only had to think about him having to get back to his place before his dad woke, which was usually at around ten in the morning. He liked to sleep in late and Ray noticed that he had never really appreciated that until now.

What a strange thing was tolerance? You could talk about respect and acceptance as much as you could. What it really meant you never knew until you were affected.

~

They had been lucky to get into Brian’s room and even luckier to get Ray out again since Brian’s dad had to leave for work early and they had almost met him when they went downstairs. However, Tom had helped them out by entangling the man in a discussion. When Ray shot a suspicious look at Brian, the blond grinned.

“Tom knows”, he whispered. “At least he knows I like you very much”

Ray felt uncomfortable. That meant the old man would have his suspicions about them and their doing. He slightly blushed and felt guilty towards Brian.

Tom eyed Brian sceptically after Ray had left and then raised his brows in question. Brian stared at him for a long moment and then shrugged his shoulders.

“Whatever, mind your own business” But secretly Brian was happy that at least one person in the house cared about him being successful, even though this had not been exactly the case.

When Ray arrived back home at their holiday house at around six he silently brought his bike back to the shed and then sneaked inside the house and into his room where he found his sister sitting in her bed, awake and almost crying. This was a bad sign.

“What’s wrong, Mischa?” he carefully asked her.

“Where were you?” she sniffed and pushed her long brown hair back over her shoulder.

‘She will be a pretty woman someday’, Ray thought with pride.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by her next question.

“You don’t like us?”

“Why do you think that?”

“Daddy don’t like mommy. He some nights goes away. You’ve been gone, too?”

“But I … I do like you, alright?”

“But you like someone else better” It sounded like a question rather than a statement, but with a curiosity to it that made Ray wonder whether she had some kind of sensor for things like that. He changed the subject.

“You said dad sometimes leaves at night time?”

“Yes, after he shouts at mommy and sometimes at me”

She was so very frank that Ray for some seconds was taken aback by the naïve harshness of her words. The older brother started to wonder, when he had last talked to her longer than two minutes. Carefully he settled down next to Mischa and looked at her intently.

“Why does he shout at mom and you?”

“Today he did because I broke a plate”

Ray’s heart sank.
“Did… did he leave last night as well?”

“No” And with a shy voice she added.

“But you did. You don’t like me either.”

For the first time in his life, Ray wrapped his arms around his seven years old sister and pulled her into a tight hug.

“Of course I like you! I love you, Mischa! You’re my little princess, remember?”

“You last called me that three years ago. That’s when daddy started shouting.”
That had also been when Ray had to leave his soccer club.

“I’m so sorry, princess”

They sat there for a while until they both fell asleep, Mischa cuddled into Ray’s chest.

~

Due to loss of orientation because of not waking up in his bed, Ray fell out of bed a few hours later and pulled the sheets with him.
Oblivious to his struggle since she was still sleeping, Mischa only made an uncomfortable noise when her pyjama pants slipped up her legs and gave access to the chill air. Ray’s gaze was stuck to her calves. They were bruised and looked like the girl had just fallen down the stairs or something. Nevertheless, Ray could guess what really the cause for the bruises and a cold shiver ran through his body.

How could he have been so blind? Had he been so tangled up in his mourning over the lost opportunity to play soccer that he did not see his entire family slipping into depression and slowly breaking in two?
