chapter eight

“Do you think this is a good idea?” Thia asked as she got inside Shane’s car waiting for him to put her bag on the back seat.

“Yes, I do. Don’t worry okay; everything is going to be just fine” Shane assured her as he positioned himself behind the wheel and started their trip back to San Francisco.

After what happened to Thia last week, they went to see Dr. William, Thia’s doctor; she told him everything about what happened to her. Dr. William had to sit and talk to Shane for almost two hours, asking him about Thia’s life before the accident and even before she met Shane.

“Well, Mr. Wilson I need to ask you some questions about Thia, how was her childhood, her family, school, college and everything,” Dr. William stood up and moved behind his desk, he came to sit right in front of Shane “so Mr. Wilson, or should I just call you Shane?”

“Yeah sure,” Shane looked down at his hands wondering from where to start “well, Thia’s parents dead when she was three, she never really knew them,”

“Did she tell you that or was it just an assumption?”

“Well, we didn’t talk about it a lot, but when she told me about them she said she didn’t really get the chance to know them.”

“But, that doesn’t mean she knew nothing about them, she did live with them for three years right?”

“Yeah, I think she once told me about this song her mom used to sing to her when she was a young, but I thought that’s normal. You know what I mean,” Shane didn’t know why Dr. William was asking all these questions about her parents, but he just told him everything he knew.

“But excuse me Dr.; I don’t see how Thia knowing her parents would help now that she’d lost her memory? She was too young to remember something like that. Shouldn’t we be talking about the last few years before the accident?”

“I disagree with Shane, sometimes it’s important to know the patient’s childhood. You see,” He got up and walked to the end of the room “sometimes the past effects massively on their personalities. But you’re right, let’s move on a little, you said her parents dead when she was only three. Who raised her up?”

“Her grandmother, she was her mother’s mom, and as I recall she loved her daughter so much that when she died, and she started taking care of Thia, she was really stricted; she would let Thia go out with guys till she was almost 18. But, she’d loved her so much that she’d never mad he sad, I mean I’ve met her, Mrs. Edison, more than once, actually I know her, and she was a very nice old lady,”

“Was? You mean she passed away?” Asked Dr. William leaning on the wall behind him.

“Yes, she passed away last year.” Shane answered sadly knowing how much Mrs. Was hurt when Thia ran away.

“I see, then she was there in your wedding?”

“Yes, she was.”

“What exactly happened that day?”

“ ‘what exactly happened that day?’ well, I’m not sure. After the wedding ceremony, we left the church at around three pm, we were supposed to go to out new home, where our friends were throwing us a reception, change our clothes, and we were supposed to fly to Italy five hours later. When we arrived there, Thia went up stairs to change her clothes, but I had to stay with the guests; our friends, her grandma, and my family too,”

“Your parents were there?” Dr. William asked suddenly.

“Yeah, my mom, and my two younger sisters, my dad passed away six years ago. But is it important?” Shane asked not knowing why it was important whether his family were there or not?

“Well, I’m starting to build this picture in my mind, and yes I think it’s important.”

“Okay, ah… yes, when half an hour passed and she didn’t come down again, I asked one of our friends, actually my best friend Mat, I asked him to go up and see what was taking her so long,” Shane closed his eyes a little remembering Mat coming back alone, “Ten minutes later he came back, saying that he didn’t find her in her room. Her wedding dress was on the bed, even her bag, yet there was no one in the room.”

“Hmm, did you go look for her yourself after that?”

“Yes, I searched the whole place, I even went to her old house, my old apartment, everywhere but she wasn’t there, I didn’t leave anywhere she could possibly be. And then my friend Mat went back home, stayed near the phone, just in case she called. He called me the next night telling me that, she called him, that she’s staying at some friends, and that she wants him to tell her grandma so she won’t worry about her, then she hung up immediately.” as Shane was talking, anger was starting to fill him.

“Of course, her grandma, she just called because of her grandma, not me!” he said painfully, then remembered where he was “I’m sorry Dr. William, it’s just that I had no idea why she left me, and I still don’t”

Dr. William straightened and walked to where Shane was sitting “did you two fight that day?” he put a hand on Shan’s shoulder to encourage him to talk.

“No, we never fought. We loved each other so much,” a smile covered his face for a second “and besides, Thia was never suspicious or anything, she was a good person, and I never did anything to make her sad.”

“Did she tell you anything before she went up to change?” Dr. William started to get puzzled; it was there on his face.

“The last thing she told me was ‘I love you’”

“First of all, look Shane, in Thia’s case, the amnesia is not permanent, and also not because of the accident,” He raised his hands, stopping Shane from what he was about to say “I mean wasn’t because of the hit, well partly it is as the hit was hard, but it seemed that something happened, and it was a terrible shock for her, it seemed it was terrible enough that her mind wanted to forget about it, to throw it away.” Dr. William said and walked back to sit behind his desk.

“You mean she is going to remember everything again?” Shane asked hopefully.

“I think so, yes. But I think it’s going to take more than just talking, you are going to have to take her back to where she grew up, her old house, your apartment, and even your new house. Do you still own it?”

“Yes, but I’m not staying in it. I never went there again, except to get back my things. But I didn’t sell it.” As he said the last words, he started asking himself why?

“Then I suggest you take her there. As a vacations or something, take her to all the places you used to go, introduce her to your family again, your friends, try to show her everything. But do not push her in to remembering something.” He got up “I think it will be helpful and please let her come visit me when you come back.”

Shane got up, “Thank you a lot Dr. William, I really appreciate it.”

And by that Shane decided to take her back to where she grew up.
