Holiday Surprises
Chapter 7
Holiday Surprises
Ever so slowly, day-by-day, Christmas seemed to be getting closer. My grandfather and I decorated the house, trimmed the tree and went to Magito Place to do some Christmas shopping.
After everything was finished I sat by the warm fire reading a book while my grandfather left to do the shopping for Christmas dinner. Misty was curled up on my lap purring contently, her light peaceful breathing was very soothing and I couldn’t help but smile down at the black bundle of fur in my lap.
Hours had past and I had finished my book, when I heard a “POP”. Knowing that my grandfather would need some help with the food, I set down my book and gently placed Misty on her pillow by the fire.
Walking into the kitchen, I greeted my grandfather and proceeded to help him put the food away. When this small task was finished I hugged my grandfather and headed up to bed, while I was changing into my nightshirt; I heard that all too familiar meowing from the hall.
Finishing I walked over to the door and let my pet into my room, sighing I pick Misty up; closed the door and head for bed. Laying down I pull the blankets over myself and drift into a peaceful slumber.
The sun peaked through the curtains of my room and casts it’s welcoming warmth on my face, yawning I pickup Misty and head down stairs. Quickly finishing breakfast, I then head into the front room.
My grandfather walks in shortly after me and then sits in a chair next to the tree. “Merry Christmas Nathan” he smiles at me, I return the smile “merry Christmas granddad”. Looking at him with that {is it ok?} look he then nods and I pick up the first present.
The first one is mine and grandfather and so on. Once all of the presents have been liberated from their containers, I help my granddad put the wrapping paper and boxes to their death in the fireplace.
Once all of the wrappings were burning in the fire, I take all of my new stuff up to my room and then return downstairs. Grandfather looks at me with sadness in his eyes when I return; looking at him I ask, “What is wrong granddad?” He pulls me into a loving embrace, now I know something is bothering him; he would only hug me like this if something were defiantly wrong.
Casting his eyes down, he tells me that my family will be coming to dinner tonight. Nodding my head I tell him everything will be ok as long as I stay close to him, my family arrived that night about six.
My grandfather could tell I was scared, at the fact I was shaking. He pulled me in for another comforting hug before the doorbell rang.
Sighing he opens the door to revel my mother, father, and brother standing there with angry looks and their faces. Swallowing hard I welcome then and lead the way to the dinning room.
I could not stop my shivering during dinner and I could tell that my father loved this. The family ate in relative silence until my father started up a conversation with my grandfather about how bad of a son I was.
I sat there for 2 hours listening to my father demand that my grandfather hand me back over to them. I knew within my heart that granddad would never give me back to them, my mother started in the argument as well.
This whole thing was wearing really thin on my nerves, so I started to silently cry. When the fighting had finally ceased, my grandfather was really mad.
He demanded that my family leave now! They after some more arguing, they finally left. Once the door was shut, I allowed myself to break down crying.
My grandfather picked me gently up into his arms and carried me to bed. Helping me change into my nightshirt, my grandfather apologized for the lousy Christmas.
Hugging my granddad, I whispered that is was all right and kissed him on the cheek. He tucked me in and left to let me get some sleep, I drifted slowly into my dreams once more.
