chapter 8

short chapter, I know but I really want to get somewhere with this, so I'm adding what I can, when I can. please review.

When Raina woke up the power was still out. She could hear the rain beating down on the roof still and King was laying beside her. She climbed out of the bed and felt her way to the bathroom before feeling her way to the stairs. She descended slowly, trying desperately to see her feet. She glanced out a window in the stairwell but she couldn't see anything through the raindrops on the window except for the black night. She went back to looking at her feet, trying to see each stair when lightning lit the stairs. Surprised, Raina lost her footing and fell down the last few stairs. Laying at the bottom she tried to ignore the images that flashed suddenly through her mind of the last time she'd fallen down stairs. Once it passed she waited another moment before getting up; trying to see if she was hurt, though she knew she'd never be as hurt from a fall as she was the last time. She forced the depressing thoughts from her mind. "Leave it to me to slip and fall the one second I can see." she mumbled to herself, standing. She was going to have a few bruises, she decided, but nothing more serious. She felt her way along the wall into the living room when she bumped into something. She reached her hands low, expecting to feel an end table and froze when she felt a leg; a human leg. She removed her hand and took a step back just as lightning hit again and lit the room. All she saw was Adam's blue eyes. Raina felt him grasp her hand and she tried to pull it from him but he was too strong. Adam pulled her through the living room and into the dining room. it was dimly lit with a single candle on the table. He pulled a chair from the wall and set it at the edge of the table before letting go of her hand. Raina pulled the chair further away, not feeling comfortable yet with Adam. Sure, he'd saved her but she was still uncomfortable with people. She had spent months in only Mark and King's company and she felt unsure around other people.

"I heard a commotion. Did you fall?" he asked, but she barely heard him. His voice was raspy and barely louder than a whisper.

"Yes, a few steps, I'm alright." she said, trying to forget the fall. "You must be Adam. I don't think I could ever thank you enough."

"You should thank that damned dog. I wouldn't have even set foot in that house if I hadn't had to feed him. When I got there he didn't even come to the door. I heard him barking from upstairs. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have even went upstairs."

"Oh." Raina replied. He seemed somewhat bitter when it came to King. "Well, thank you anyways. I was so sure I was going to die, I welcomed it."

"I know how that feels. I was lucky to get away."

"I didn't know Mark had male slaves."

"I wasn't a slave, at least, not the way you're thinking. He was trying to train me to follow in his footsteps. I never really got into torturing and degrading women. He was my father and I suppose he wanted a son just like him as so many fathers want. When I turned 18 I got as far away as possible. I was lucky he considered me a disappointment. He gave up on me and got the dog. The few times we spoke since I left he'd always go into detail about how obedient King was and how I was nothing but a failure in his eyes. 'A man that considers women his equal are weak' he used to tell me. Now, tell me more about you. You said you were kidnapped? He didn't pay you for your services?"

Raina was speechless, not only had he pretty much told her he didn't believe her but he also accused her of being a whore. "I'm not a prostitute. Yes, I was kidnapped."

"I wasn't trying to imply that you were. Mark used to pay women to be his slaves. When were you kidnapped?"

"About a week before Christmas."

"You were there for almost 7 months?" he asked after quickly doing the math in his head.

"That sounds about right." Raina replied. "Is this going anywhere? I don't really like looking back on it."

"I'm sorry. I was just trying to get a feel for your situation."

"oh I see" she could feel herself growing hysterical. It had been seven months too long. "Let me just sum it up for you real quick then. He used and abused me. Forced me to do things I never even considered. Did things to me that I don't even want to remember all the while shutting me off from everything and everyone I knew and loved. I watched the sun set yesterday and I felt like it was the first time I'd ever seen it in my entire life. I wasn't even allowed to look out the window."

"I know things were bad for you, and I'm sorry. I'll help you as much as I can, get you back on your feet. I'll even pay for therapy if you want it."

"Why? So he can break me all over again when he finds me?" Raina asked bitterly.

"You don't have to worry about Mark anymore. He's dead."
