Big Boy Connor
Chapter Seven: Big boy Connor
The time sped along, until it was close to Lucilla’s due date. Kessie was making plans to stay with her favorite, and only known, Uncle Charlie while her Mommy, Lucilla, and her Mama, Raquella, went to the hospital to have Connor.
Kessie knew where babies came from, but she still liked to think that Connor was waiting for them at the hospital.
“Mama?” Kessie would say as Raquella drove her to school, right by the hospital.
“Yes Kessie?”
“Can we pick up Connor today?”
“Kessie...”
Kessie would laugh.
Raquella had been giving Lucilla’s stomach all the love and affections that she had given hers when she was pregnant.
On the night before Lucilla’s due date, Kessie went to spend a week with her favorite ‘Unky!”
“Kessie, when you get back, we are going to have baby Connor here with us, to share our love and our wonderful home.” Raquella hugged her daughter and smiled.
“Okay, but I hope that he doesn’t hog all the toys in my room!” Kessie said as she got into Charlie’s car.
All three adults shared a good laugh.

It was later in the evening that Lucilla told Raquella that she was starting to feel different. “Hey, Raquella...come here...” Lucy called to Raq.
Raquella walked over to Lucilla, who was in the kitchen, making some herbal tea. “What is it Lucilla?”
“I feel...weird...” Lucy said. “I don’t know how to describe it.”
“Well, does it feel like you have to go to the bathroom but doesn’t?”
“Well, yes, but no...”
Lucilla went on to say something, but her water broke. Raquella’s eyes widened and she hurried to call the ambulance, not thinking that they’d have enough time to get to the hospital any other way.

By the time the ambulance got to the house, they found Lucilla lying carefully on the kitchen floor, with towels to prop her back up. The EMTs had very little time to get her into the ambulance and on the way to the hospital.
“Lucilla...” Raquella said as one of the paramedics gave Lucy an I.V. line, “I guess this means that I won’t be able to preform the beginning of the labor ritual...” She was so looking forward to it. She’d be the father figure this time.
“Raq...” Lucilla said, “Don’t worry about it...”

In the ten minute ride that it took them to get to the hospital, Connor Michael was born. He was rushed to the NICU as quickly as the ambulance was stopped. Lucilla was rushed to the Labor and Delivery floor to make sure she was alright.
As Lucilla and Raquella had feared, Raq didn’t get to preform the rituals on Connor until he was well over a day old. But other than that, Connor was a healthy baby and full of love and attention.
