Fateful

CH 7 \"Fateful\"

During one of our fight-against-evil nights we encountered a demon. I had read in the papers some nights before that a madman had left his victims burning and before doing that he’d stolen their eyes. “The Flame” they called him. To mortals that sounded like a lunatic or a deeply disturbed person but to someone like me it sounded more like the works of a demon. All though I knew they existed I was not so aware of how to destroy them. And I realized when we encountered it, seeking it out that I had put Lynn in unnecessary danger, I only hoped that gem around her neck would have the same affect on the demon as with the vampires.

She challenged it and it immediately responded by trying to set her on fire. The gem turned red and provided a protective force-field for both me and Lynn, keeping the demon at bay. It tried to shoot us with its demonic fire but as long as the force-field was up nothing could penetrate it. Then she tried what had worked on the vampires, she held her hand up, palm towards the demon and again said “No”. The red light hit the demon but it only flung it backwards a bit, making it land on its rear. But that didn’t kill it.

“Shit, why isn’t it working?” She screamed out, almost losing that whole cool façade she wore as a cloak of personality in general. “Maybe this demon needs to be killed in a specific way” I said as the demon shot fire at us again. Lynn started to look anxious; the protective force-field was working at least.

“You’re quite right” I heard a dark voice say behind me. A middle aged tall man (quite handsome for his age) walked past us and tossed a small bottle on the ground, the potion inside it turned to smoke and the man cast a spell in Latin saying only a few words and the creature was set ablaze, and throwing two exceptionally beautiful looking knives into each eye of the demon, and it was by that act destroyed.

The man was of well build and had dark brown hair with specks of gray in it, and his stubble had the same colors. His eyes stood out though, green as the summer grass and with those greens gazed mercilessly upon both of us.
“Who are you?” Lynn asked incredulously, not really believing what she just saw. “My name is Gregory Prydz, but who I am I cannot tell you with mere words.” His accent was English, clearly a posh sort of English.

“Gees” Lynn rolled her eyes “everybody’s got to be so damn cryptic with their answers these days” she smiled at me and I took her hand in mine, entangling our fingers. The strange man watched our every move and registered and reacted (very little but enough to make me notice) to that simple act. I never took my eyes off him.
“Tell me” he said suddenly “how did you get that precious stone?” pointing at Lynn’s newfound jewelry.
“I found it in my mother’s drawer” she said truthfully.
“She gave it to you?” he asked. Lynn frowned and tilted her head to the side as if not understanding. “Not that it’s any of your business but no, she didn’t give it to me -she’s dead.”
The man’s face changed now from questioning to apologetic, not really knowing now what to say. “I’m sorry” he muttered.
“Why do you ask me this? And how come you could kill that demon?”

The man smiled graciously “So many questions” he said obviously satisfied with something. I tried my best to get inside his brain to figure out who he was, evil or no he was still mysterious. “No not really only two questions” she said firmly. Did not succeed in reading his mind thought by thought (he was powerful enough to keep me out of them) but I got a sense of honesty and true goodness when looking inside his heart.

“Tell me one last thing before I reveal my purpose for being here” he waited patiently for her consent.
“Yeah, sure” she shrugged her shoulders lightly.
“When you found it how did it feel? Did you find it by mistake? Or would you say you were…meant to finding it?”
“How did you know that?” Lynn looked surprised and came a little bit closer to the man. “It felt like it was calling to me. All along when I was staying with my legal guardians after my parents died it felt like I had to go back to that house, to get something. And even as I was there I knew what I was searching for. And when I found it and hung it around my neck I felt…right. Like it made sense that I was wearing this thing.” She played with the chain of the gem, making it glitter in the reflecting light.

The tall man reached inside his coat and handed Lynn a business card that read:
Gregory Prydz; President of the Council of the Nightly Order. It had an address and phone number imprinted. As we read the little card Gregory started speaking. “I asked this because if the gem you are wearing was given to you as opposed to calling you on it’s own you would not have been the true owner. But since your mother had it and it called to you after she died you were meant to have it. And it had been activated again, learning that you are ready now to be the responsible owner of its powers. You like your mother before you are chosen to be a Night Warrior.”

Both Lynn and I stared at the man dubiously who was waiting for some kind of confirmation. “Wait a minute” she spoke after realizing the meaning of the words “my mom was a…what did you call it?”
“A Night Warrior” he spoke plainly “or Protector of the Innocent.”
Her big blues widened. I kept quiet not really knowing what to say about all of this. It seemed the man was speaking the truth and I had known from the start that Lynn was special, and now it made sense to me why she had been so strong considering her young age, and the fact that she wasn’t so big a woman, just this tiny little thing. So it didn’t actually surprise me but there was still a lot to be taken in at once.

Lynn begged for me without words to say if all was true or not. “He has a truthful heart” I whispered in her ear. The man raised an eyebrow not hearing what I had said but coming closer as of he would then have heard. “You sure?” she whispered back to me. I nodded looking the man straight in the eye, who knew what I was and apparently not approving of our situation (mine and Lynn’s relationship). Lynn reached out her free hand (still holding mine with the other) to shake with Mr. Prydz .

“My name is Lynn, but who I really am cannot be described in words” she smiled at him and he seemed to blush a little realizing how he had sounded like before. “or something like that” she added.
“Yes, well Lynn it’s nice to have met you” he smiled that charmed smile again.
“Or should I say destined…to meet you”
“Destined?” I asked “how so destined?” The Englishman looked unwilling to reveal to me these things, realizing that it could mean danger for some evil creature to know these things. But he had to tell Lynn, and so decided for the time being to trust me with that small information he was about to give the both of us. “You see every warrior has a guardian, the guardian guides the warrior in her battles against evil providing knowledge about what is to be faced and general guidance, it is also his duty to train the Chosen One in both physical abilities and regarding the power of the Gem.”

I looked at him still a bit suspicious, but actually sure that he was not a bad person at all. He stared back at me every now and then being suspicious of me as well. And with reason, many creatures like me could use this to do very wicked things. “I have been appointed Guardian and if you will allow me; I would like to have the honor of being you personal Guardian” he finished.
Lynn was absolutely spellbound I could almost feel her excitement growing with each word the middle aged man spoke. He really did have a pleasant voice, so calm and poised and all though he watched me with great dislike he had no malice or contempt whatsoever when talking to my darling girl Lynn. On the contrary he was very polite and humble.

I saw this coming a mile away but in spite of myself it took me by surprise when Gregory asked Lynn to come with him to see the school were they educated the girls and boys of different powers, who fought side by side against…(and he averted his eyes from her and peered into my eyes and said)…evil.
I pulled Lynn closer to me as to show him that she was mine, and she trusted me enough to be so close to her.
Lynn accepted the man’s offer and thanked him for sharing of information and ‘saving our asses’ as she so eloquently put it. She knew as well as I that he really didn’t want to share this information with me present, but he had no other choice, he had to convince her right then and there otherwise she’d dismiss him and he’d lose one of his precious future warriors, and he didn’t want to do that.

Lynn and I walked to the place where I resided at the moment, knowing we’d have to have a talk. She was short of words all the way home, probably thinking of her new destiny and I was always short of words.

“What do you think Alex?” she asked me gravely.
“About what exactly?” I motioned for her to sit down beside me on the couch.
She sighed. “About the whole thing, the sudden destiny, the mysterious gentleman the invitation.” Dark blue eyes peered at me in this dark and shadowy room, wanting advice, needing it.
“If it is indeed your destiny then you will feel it’s right to go that way” I said not really looking at her “if it’s not then it’s simply not.”
She nodded knowing I meant that it was entirely up to her. “And about Mr. Prydz?” she asked again.

“As I said earlier he has a truthful heart I see no malice in him, and I fully believe in him, for what it’s worth.” I paused taking her small hands in mine, now aware of how deadly they could be. “Will you go to the School for the Gifted?” I asked, remembering him saying it like that if not out loud then mentally. “I’ll check it out” my fair princess warrior said as a response, and I marveled at her soft spoken words, even the simplest of them. She leaned in and licked teasingly at my lips, the little vixen, and I kissed her softly, showing her my deep affections, holding her small frame tight in my embrace. “And…I think I’ll go at daytime, I think I kind of have to” she said voice sounding sweet.

My hands treaded carefully over her shoulder and over her back, searching their way onto naked pure porcelain skin. My desire always overwhelmed me and her desire bringing me as always closer to the edge of uncontrollable need.

Didn’t like the lack of control that befell me every time she was near, making me think I should take her in my arms , please her, finger her, lick her and bite her, yes bite her and draw that sweet blood from her youthful veins. Drain her, make her drink form the dark blood make her beg for it, make her mine in darkness eternally.

My mind registered what I was thinking and I snapped out of it taking a good look at her. Her sweet face, her innocent eyes her short years, why end something so beautiful? She is perfect as a mortal and she has got a great goodness within, a rare soul and I couldn’t take her, I shouldn’t, I cannot!

Even though it hurts not to feel the blood coursing through my veins sending signals of craving though me I recover from the demand of my body.
I stood up from the sofa beside her, holding her hands, feeling with my fingertips the sensation of soft human skin and strong fingernails.

“Promise me that you will be on your guard, and keep both eyes and ears out for anything…suspicious.” I demanded that of her rather than asking of her.
“Okay” she whispered and with that she stood up preparing to leave so that I could spend the rest of the evening brooding as I normally would.

“Sleep with me” I said to her, my vulnerability all to exposed for my taste.
The little wildcat smiled naughtily and made for taking off my clothes, but I stopped her.
“No, just to sleep. Just sleep beside me I don’t want you to go.”
And we did sleep together, the weight of her body so warming and comforting and I wished for this to last forever, but I knew it would not. I would have to make sure it didn’t.
