Anyway on with the next chapter.
*******
Andy
could have broken something he was so angry, but he wasn’t allowed out of his
bed with the watch full gazes of both his mother and Kath upon him so he had to
take his anger out of the unfortunate policeman come to take his statement.
“Are
you deaf or just incredibly stupid? I told you already somebody tried to take
my mobile I wouldn’t let them and they beat me up”
The
policeman raised an eyebrow “And you didn’t get a clear view of your attacker?”
“No,
he was warring a dark coat with a hood, I couldn’t see his face” Andy
congratulated himself that he would have now at least half of the police force
glaring suspiciously at anyone in a coat with a hood.
“And
that’s all?”
Andy’s
green eyes narrowed and he nodded slowly “That’s everything alright, I didn’t
get a very clear look this guy just said give us your phone, I wouldn’t and he
beat me up; that’s all!”
“Thank
you Sir, you’ve been” The policeman stood up and paused as if searching for the
right word and finally gave up “very helpful”
Andy
snorted.
**
Stella
was waiting nervously outside in the hall, the policeman had asked for her to
leave in case Andy had to say something he didn’t want his mother to hear and
now she hovered anxiously by the door.
Kath
had gone home after the policeman had questioned her, she had told him she had
no clue about what had happened until she phoned Andy and he hadn’t answer; she
hadn’t mentioned Oscar.
The
door swung open and the policeman stepped out shutting the door behind him with
a grim look upon his face.
“Mrs
David-Lloyd?” he asked, Stella shook her head.
“Miss,
I’m divorced” She said quietly fingering her vivid pinkr thr that had at the
time seemed a wonderful way to reclaim her waited youth but in the hospital
looked too bright and too silly to fool anyone.
“Miss
David-Lloyd, Estella?”
“Yes
but most people call me Stella” she laughed, forced and the policeman offered
her a half-smile.
“Stella
then, I’d like to ask you about Andrew if I may”
“Of
course” Stella said, her hands clenched and unclenched at her sides.
“Your
Son’s been in hospital quite recently hasn’t he?”
“Yes,
but we dealt with that, he had a nasty accident” Stella avoided the man’s eyes repeating
everything she had said to the policeman at that time as well.
“I
know, it’s on our reports” The policeman’s voice was cold, sarcastic and Stella
winced slightly.
“Then
why are you asking me?” She snapped.
“I
just wondered if Andrew might be…doing something to provoke these attacks”
Stella
felt sick “You think he’s starting them?”
“Maybe,
atteattention or affection, living in a single parent family”
“I
think you had better go” Stella said quietly “My son doesn’t start these
things, and I proved well for him and his sister so I would prefer it if you
didn’t start to question me on how I raise my kids” she pulled herself up to
her full height and glared at the policeman “and I think you should rethink
your questioning skills because frankly they stink!”
**
Andy groaned and turned away the the insistently smiling face; Alison didn’t
seem to notice.
“I
brought you some flowers, a room always looks nice with flowers in it” she said
tweeting away as she placed her bouquet of lilies and violets in a vase by his
bedside.
“Very
pretty” Andy commented dryly.
“I
hope you do get better soon Andy” Alison chirped “I do miss you at school, we
all do”
“I
know, Kath’s been here every day telling me” Andy said, Alison’s cheeks flushed
and she pursed her lips.
“Yes…well
Kath doesn’t really care all that much for her studies as the rest of us do”
“I
heard she was doing quite well” Andy said, Alison ignored him and instead perched
herself on the side of his bed and felt his forehead.
“Would
you like a glass of water?” she asked hopefully, Andy shook his head and she
looked regretful.
“It
was nice seeing you again Alison” Andy said, casting his eyes to the door
hoping she would get the hint but Alison hareadready launched into some anecdote.
“you’ll
never guess who came to sit with us at lunch yesterday! Oscar! Can you believe it?
He wanted to see Kath”
Andy
looked at her incredulously “Kath?”
“Yes,
wanted to talk to her about you”
Andy’s
lips formed a sneer “well he would wouldn’t he the stupid fucker, must feel
guilty it being his fault I’m in here”
Alison’s
mouth fell open as she processed this information.
**
Kath
was so angry she could spit, waiting on the side of the field for practise to
end and Oscar to jog over to her she pulled the grass out by the roots and
hurled clumps of it at the running team when they came past her.
She
wasn’t angry at them, more at Andy for being the tactless jerk he was and for
the policeman who’d questioned him and Stella, a tearful phone call to her
best-friends mother had done nothing but convince her more that gays and
lesbians where the second class citizens of this country.
She
hardly heard the cat calls and whistles that greeted Oscar collapsing besides
her.
“Hi”
he said “You didn’t need to wait for me”
“Why
does Andy hate you?” she asked him, Oscar cast a quick fleeting glance to Olli
and then back down as fes feet, he began to unlace his trainers.
“I
dunno…maybe because I am…I mean I was friends with that lot” he waved a trainer
towards the lads rasping back to the school and the showers. “Maybe he thinks I’d
be like that to him”
“I
hate them” Kath whispered darkly “bloody hypocritical dickheads the lot of them”
Oscar
finished pull of his socks and wiggled his toes, looking at them suspiciously.
“Was
Andy seeing anyone?” he asked quietly, Kath shook her head.
“Not
that I knew of, nobody since Olli…and that was last year before he got beaten
up”
Oscar
felt a sharp pang of nausea.
“So
Olli was out then?”
Kath
snorted and had to wipe her nose on the back of her sleeve.
“Andy
wished, no that boy’s so repressed its amazing his heads not jammed up his arse”
“Who
says its not?” Oscar asked, half joking.
“Andy
dumped him flat on his ass when Olli said he wanted to keep it secret, to
frightened about losing his place on the team, I only knew they’d been together
after when Andy came round mine with some of his mums cheep stuff and got completely
plastered”
“Did
the brake up effect him that bad?”
“He
likes to drink” Kath said earnestly “But yes, it was pretty bad Andy kept saying
he loved him”
“Oh”
was the only reply Oscar could think of “do you want to come to dinner?”
“Hu?”
Kath’s surprised expreshion was priceless.
“To
meet my folks, I told them I’d made a new friend and they wanted to meet you
“I
“I
suppose” now Kath was looking at her shoes, she kicked them off and wiggled her
own feet through her opaque tights. “should I drep?” p?”
“Probably,
I want them to like you, to be impressed by you”
“So
if I wore my cream shirt and black skirt?”
“Nice,
practical and not too showy”
Kath
grinned at him “you’re so gay”
Oscar
starred at her wide-eyed “No, no I’m not and don’t say anything like that round
my parents”
A
look of alarm flickered across ’s f’s face for an instant “Okay” she drew a
breath and changed the conversation to a safer track “So what is it your
parents do?”OscaOscar
looked cheerful at this new topic “My dad’s a manager at the new Tesco’s and my
mum’s a dance teacher”
“A
dance teacher?” Kath’s eyes sparkled “Did I ever tell you I took two years of interpretive
dance?”

Inspector
Malcolm Pierce was on desk duty tonight and it was oddly quite, he was reading
the newspaper, an interesting article about the councils proposed new sports centre,
when the phone rang, and he picked it up and answered with a cheery
“Hello,
Police Station, Inspector Pierce speaking how may I help?”
“I
think I know who attacked up Andrew David-Lloyd” The voice on the other end
said.
