Caat Studies
Interlude - Eavesdropping
Cassie grunted as she benched the bar. She had a thousand pounds on the bar, and slowly did each rep, holding it at the top and making sure she had perfect form. With as many markers as she had, it was hard to get in a workout that actually meant anything. She grunted as she forced the bar up again.
It had been a crappy week. She was so sick and tired of dealing with whiny useless house caats. Two had been assaulted while out shopping at different stores, and Morris had her running all over hell trying to track down the perps. She didn't really see the point in it, it just made them a slightly better kill when it came time to harvest after all. Those men who had done the assault shouldn't be locked up, which they were, they should be getting a reward.
Cassie scowled at the ceiling as she worked out her frustrations. Morris had been such a pain in the ass lately. He had grown so fucking soft over the last decade. It was high time for a change in leadership. She should be the one in charge, their man power could be used for actual valuable activities, not wasted on protecting the herd. She swore as her arms quivered trying to finish the rep.
She had the bar at the top of her rep, when the door suddenly banged open. Red came in looking panicked. The caat's markers were a mess, and half her face was covered in a bright red blotch. The reason for her nickname. Her short spiky dirty blond hair was greasy and a disheveled. A true slob. Cassie just sneered at her before racking her weights.
“To what do I owe the horror of seeing your face.” Cassie said.
“It's bad. It's real bad.” Red stammered. Cassie sighed, Red was great with computers, but useless with anything else.
“Use your words.” Cassie taunted, drying her face with a towel.
“Amara has undergone her first shift.” Red said, looking worried.
“Are you sure?” Cassie said, feeling fresh rage towards Morris.
Red pulled out her cell phone and tapped the screen several times. Audio suddenly blaring out.
“She's really sick Mike.” A sobbing caat said.
“What happened? She was fine this morning?”
The audio grew silent before it the audio switched to a different bug. The sound slowly grew louder as the two people talked. Probably that whore caat's two partners Cassie thought dryly.
“Oh my god! What happened to her hands?”
The audio picked up the low moaning and thrashing of a third caat. She was panting and and groaning in agony. Mumbling constantly about the beasts were chasing her. The hunters were after her. Oh god the hunters were close. The audio suddenly devolved into low constant whimpers.
“I'll call 911.” The man whispered terror in his voice.
“No! Look at her! We can't!”
Red shut off the tape, a look of worry on her face.
“Fuck!” Cassie screamed. She reached down and grabbed a dumbbell, hurling at the wall like a missile. It stuck fast into the dry wall, quivering there lightly. It's weight slowly pulled it down, hitting the ground with a huge thud.
“Should I tell Morris?” Red said, more scared of Cassie than what the tape represented. Cassie had been so unstable lately.
“No. I'll deal with the problem myself.”
“But I thought.” Red started.
“That's your problem, you thought!” Cassie snarled. “I'm in charge of that Amara girl. I'll deal with with her. In fact, delete all the recordings, I don't want anything saved or getting back to Morris. Understand?”
“Yes Ma'am.” Red said submissively.
“Are they home today?” Cassie asked, mind plotting.
“Yes Ma'am. They went to the academy early this morning. Now they are just, I don't know hanging out. Everyone is subdued. They brought a couple of other caats home with them, but there is just one left now. Her name's Abi it sounds like, but I don't know who she is yet. Might be another caat getting her medical degree I think. They had one there last night.”
“I want the name of the doctor that was there last night. And any other friends that Amara has. You got twenty minutes.”
“Yes Ma'am.”
Cassie watched with a scowl as the half wit scurried out the door. She grabbed her cell phone, scrolling through her contacts quickly.
“Aaron. I have a job for you. It's a rush job, needs to happen tonight.”
Cassie listened for a moment, a smile appearing on her face.
“Of course.” She purred. “The job has a few stops, hope your ready for a busy night.”
