“But who is she?” Lydia asked.
“Does it really matter?”
The older woman rolled her eyes.
“Richard please, we ought to care who our daughter brings home.”
He shrugged from his place on the couch, upstairs Diamond closed her bedroom door and glanced at Christina who was laying on her bed. She sat next to her.
“What do you want to eat?”
She shook her head, exhaustion was starting to set in a nap wasn’t enough.
“I just want to sleep...” she mumbled.
“Okay I’ll leave you alone.”
She started to move and Christina grabbed her wrist.
“Can you...lay with me....for a minute?” she asked quietly.
Diamond pulled the blanket over them before she laid down then Christina rolled over to move closer to her Diamond wrapped her arms around her in the most comfortable position she could manage. They remained like that for the rest of the night.
..........
The next afternoon Diamond knew Christina was awake but she hadn’t said anything yet and she hadn’t tried moving away from Diamond.
“Diamond...?”
“Hm?”
“Who was screaming?”
“When?”
“When I panicked the other day....”
“That was you.” she said softly.
Christina sighed she felt embarassed.
“Of course it was....”
.....................................................
After a week or so of trying her hardest to bottle everything up and finally succeeding.
“You don’t have to rush off.”
“Yes I do, I need to get back to Frank I just know he’s angry.”
“He won’t be, I told you I would take care of him.”
Christina turned around and hugged Diamond.
“Thank you for being there for me, but I can handle this now.”
“You’re welcome, and you still haven’t told me what you’re handling.”
“I will, just not right now.”
“Fine, I’ll drop you off.”
..........
Frank thought she had been at a convention for the teachers at Emerald High, the house was perfectly cleaned even though she knew she had things to do before she left. She sighed she would have to thank Diamond.
“How is your father doing?”
“I’m fine.”
She swiveled around and saw Samuel coming out of the downstairs guest bedroom at sixty-five he looked far more fit than his son. He was taller, well taken care of and hadn’t yet lost his salt and pepper hair. He had kind dark brown eyes and often wore a jersey and sweat pants because he liked to work out often.
“Come give me a hug pumpkin.”
She smiled and walked over to hug him, so that’s why Frank was being so docile.
“Hey Franny Christina is home.”
Francina had aged nicely she was shorter than Samuel and had a nice tan, she kept her black hair dyed and in large curls. Sometimes she walked around with rollers in all day so her curls would keep their shape. She had green eyes and was always dressed in one of her favorite long skirts and a fluffy sweater. She hugged Christina and held her at arms length.
“Oh I’m so glad we came to visit, you’ve gotten so skinny I’ll have to put some meat on your bones.”
Christina laughed.
“Oh really? Well I’m looking forward to your pot roast.”
Francina squealed, she loved feeding people and loved it when anyone hinted at a favorite.
“I’ll have to run to the store and get everything, oh Frank take me to the store.”
He rolled his eyes.
“Mom we have meat here.”
“But you don’t have what I cook with, and you aren’t going back to work until tomorrow afternoon it’s not like you can’t handle it.”
He sighed heavily and got up.
“Fine fine, let’s go.”
Francina grabbed her purse and a jacket and followed him out when they were alone Christina turned around.
“Did you really fall and hurt yourself?”
“Of course not, you know our tub has those rubber mats and there is a bar just in case.”
“So why did you tell him that?”
“Franny wanted to see him and he wouldn’t come by.”
She never understood why he didn’t like to go see his parents they were so nice and loved seeing their son, even if he was a jackass. She would run to see her parents anytime she could if she was in his shoes.
“But you know since you got married there is only one thing that compliments Franny’s roast, that you may or may not know how to make.”
She grinned.
“One banana pudding coming up.”
“Oh thanks pumpkin you’re a doll.”
She walked into the kitchen and grabbed what she needed, she was grateful the two were there it was much easier to get over heartache when they were around. Frank was skilled at making everything worse she knew it wasn’t healthy to just pretend like nothing happened but she just didn’t have the time to be anymore depressed than she was. She reached in the junk drawer next to her and pushed things around until she pulled out a long velvety box. She opened it and stared at the silver locket she treasured. Frank had broken it and she could no longer wear it, he threatened to throw it out so she told him she did and hid it in the drawer.
“Hey that’s pretty.”
She jumped and turned around Samuel was looking at the necklace over her shoulder.
“Yeah, it belongs to my little sister really, but she gave it to me before she....ran away I haven’t seen her since.”
While it was true she hadn’t seen her sister in a while it wasn’t true that she had ran away, but Samuel and Franny were just two more people she didn’t want to get involved. Her sister was taken when she was thirteen and after five years all Christina knew was that so far she was safe. She didn’t know where she was but the people that were holding her sent a picture of her every year from different addresses. She only stayed with Frank because he knew something about it, and was apparently good friends with those awful people. It was just easier to grin and bear everything, after all she tried leaving Frank once and what it took to bring her back was a picture of her sister with her leg broken.
“Oh, I’m sorry why don’t you wear it if you miss her?”
“It’s broken.”
“I see how old is she?”
“Her eighteenth birthday was last month.”
“Don’t worry so, I’m sure she just wanted to see the world while she was young.”
“Yeah.”
“Here hand it over, I have a nice chain I can give you.”
“Oh Samuel I couldn’t.”
“You can, I can see out important it is to you.”
He took the box from her and went to his room, when he came back he helped her put it on, she thanked him and he winked.
“Don’t thank me with words, thank me with extra cookies.”
She couldn’t help but laugh and opened the box.
“Sure, why not?”
.............................................................
After dinner Francina said they would be staying for a while, they had been staying with a friend while their house was being fumigated. It was so old that it was very over due and they would most likely have to send in workers to replace the carpet and re-paint the walls.
“Why don’t you just move in?” Frank said in annoyance.
His mother grinned, almost evilly.
“Oh darling did you hear that our beloved son wants to live with mommy and daddy again.”
He glared at her.
“Don’t even think about it this house isn’t big enough.”
“How so? You still have an extra room for our grandchildren and you could always turn that storage closet downstairs into another room.”
Christina stayed quiet and pretended she wasn’t relieved.
“Oh yes I forgot about grandchildren, my fall could have killed me it made me realize I need to be closer to family.” Samuel said dramatically.
Francina clapped her hands excitedly.
“So it’s settled, ooh Christina we’ll have to plan a few days just for us girls.”
Frank got up and stormed upstairs, Francina stuck her tongue out at him.
“What’s his problem? We won’t be alive much longer.”
“Don’t talk like that Samuel.”
“That’s right, besides we haven’t lost our minds yet or forgotten our own names yet we have to get old the correct way you know.” Francina said.
Christina giggled as they went back and forth about the “proper way” to get old.
“You’re getting ahead of yourself, we haven’t lost all our teeth yet, hey Christina you think it would be expensive to just get all my teeth removed and get implants?”
“Probably, but you know you took such good care of your teeth it would hurt more to just yank all of them out.”
He stroked his jaw.
“You have a point, dammit, I just knew I shouldn’t have brushed so much when I was a kid.”
They laughed.
.......................
It was soon getting colder and there were less warm days as October rolled around Christina replaced her skirts with jeans and wore a jacket more often over her top. She had no idea where Elmer was, she should be glad of course, but she was a little paranoid he could come out of nowhere and she wouldn’t be prepared for it. She was in the teacher’s lounge when the door opened she looked up and sighed.
“Diamond you’re not suppose to be in here.”
“Matthew said I could.”
“Oh so now you’re calling the principal by his name?”
“Of course, I like him.”
Christina stirred her coffee she touched her stomach and took a breath, she hadn’t been drinking much coffee lately but it hadn’t been so long that the scent should make her sick. She set the cup down, Diamond looked over.
“Are you okay?”
“Uh yeah, I think I need to skip breakfast.”
Diamond frowned.
“You shouldn’t be skipping meals.”
“I know I know Francina tells me that every day.”
“Who?”
“She’s Frank’s mother, his parents moved in with us, didn’t I tell you?”
“I don’t think so I’ve been busy with tests, and too much homework I haven’t had much social interaction lately.”
“Oh?”
“Texting you isn’t social interaction I like to get out and have fun.”
She smiled a little, then groaned.
“Do you want me to take you to the nurse?”
She shook her head.
“I’m fine I’m just a little dehydrated.”
She moved away from the counter then ran into the bathroom, Diamond clearly heard her lose what little was in her stomach.
“Christina?”
“I think I just ate something bad.”
She wiped her mouth and got up to rinse it out with water from the sink, she came out and Diamond cocked her head.
“Come on I’ll take you to the nurse.”
“Yeah okay.”
Diamond left her with Rachel and went to class.
........
When Diamond returned Rachel pulled her aside.
“What is it?”
“I’ve looked at everything, now I think I know what happened.”
“What?”
“When she had that attack I think she was raped, she’s pregnant and I know it’s not her husband’s child.”
