Talking while Travelling

The thick cloud above looked ready to dump more snow. They crossed the diner's umbral and headed to Shannon's car. Not one of the trio paid any attention to the wintery chill.

“I shall drive. I leaned the location of Jeb’s farm from the waitress’s memories, amongst many other things. She did not like him.”

Kizzy held out her hand. Shannon tossed the keys to the angel and subtly looked back at the diner. Deputy McQueen was watching them closely in the reflection on the shiny chrome behind Mack. The succubus would be happy to entertain both officers, in or out of their uniforms.

"Hey," Lupa broke through her increasingly erotic mental images as she climbed into the back seat, "did I hear that right? Kate's eating people?"

"One person, sweetie, and he killed others."

Shannon sat in the front with Kizzy but kept her eyes on Lupa in the mirror. Though very little of the Hispanic girl was visible under her sun-shielding clothing she read the hunched, hands clasped body language like a book. She gently chided herself for not having spotted the girl was a vampire weeks ago, but Lupa had always discreetly avoided physical contact even with the excessively tactile Shannon. She'd most often used the excuse of her 'sensitive skin,' claiming touch caused her pain. It hadn't hurt that she was newly turned enough that she hadn't stopped acting like a mortal in many ways.

"I never killed... I mean, I helped kill some vampires..." Lupa trailed off again.

Shannon reached back and squeezed a cold hand. Something bad had happened to the girl before they met. Kizzy had been inside her mind, she'd know all about it, but all Shannon knew was Lupa had lost her life and family.

“You want to talk about it?”

Lupa shook her covered head.

"You want me to slip back there and do some things to take your mind off it?"

“Lupa has no interest in your demonic lust, Shannon,” Kizzy said without taking her eyes from the road.

The hoodie-wrapped figure in the backseat started shaking with suppressed laughter at Kizzy’s severe tone. Shannon turned back and winked, then flicked her tongue out inhumanly far and wiggled it. Lupa broke into full laughter,

"You've gone from being a dirty-minded cheerleader to Leisure Suit Larry," Lupa finally managed, "and Kizzy has stayed exactly the same since the slumber party! Ay, you're loco. I don't like girls in that way!"

Shannon nodded and smiled, then flicked up her arm to bring Kate’s bracelet to her fingers before dropping it back around her wrist. It had dropped from the werewolf’s foreleg back in Kizzy’s garden. Shannon had managed to use it to trace their friend until the connection began to fade, and at the angel’s suggestion they’d pulled into the diner. There they’d overheard the information they needed. Coincidence? Shannon flicked the bracelet up again and looked at the faint, sure, smile Kizzy wore.

“There are things about me you can call demonic. I’m a succubus so that’s totally fair. My lust isn’t one of them. It has been a part of me since I was created. Ok, Lupa, listen to this. It’s close enough to how it happened. Picture a whole bunch of newly created angels in groups, formed into squad ranks on instinct. Each squad arrayed before an Archangel.”

Lupa turned from looking where leaves had started to undulate on a solitary evergreen tree. The wind was rising.

“Ok. Imagining it. Piles of harps. Some bad hombre like Hartman asking how high you shit.”

"Just like that!” Shannon laughed, “Only instead of shouting and screaming my squad had, like, the creator's most perfect creation; the Archangel Luzurial. She didn't need to shout or scream. She commanded, firmly and competently, and we listened. We were supposed to be forming swords to wield. My best friend made hers easily and had already begun working on a spear. I couldn't do it. Eventually all of them had their swords, and still, nothing formed for me. Luzurial came over and gave me all of her attention. That's when I first knew lust. I mean,"

Shannon had been talking quietly, lost in memory, and then suddenly grew much more animatedly like her normal self, “looking into those big brown eyes of hers was so… sexy. And she had a body like...”

Shannon’s hand gestures left neither listener in any doubt as to what she thought the Archangel was like. Lupa snorted.

"'Concentrate,' she told me, ‘you have been created with the knowledge within you. There will be other duties in time but an Angel must be a soldier too. Reach inside yourself and form your weapon.' So I did. I looked into Luzurial's eyes and felt the energy flow and my weapon formed. About 9 inches long, fairly thick, rounded tip, surface like soft leather, flaming gently ... Anyway, after a brief pause Luzurial explained I had created a club, a sap, used to render an opponent unconscious with less damage than a sword. I managed the sword after that. It wasn't until later I realized what my ‘sap' really was. So no, Kizurial of the seraphim, my lust is not demonic."

“You have my apology, Shannon. I did not mean to offend you.”

Shannon blew her a kiss, “I’m not offended, silly, but thanks.”

“That’s fucked up. Why create an angel with lust?” asked Lupa, “I bet you weren’t even unique, right? This kind of shit is why it makes more sense not to believe in heaven and hell. Like, if instead of an actual Supreme Being it’s just some cabrón making things that think they’re demons and angels. I’d definitely prefer to believe that shit.”

Kizzy did not answer, but if any creatures in creation besides the creator knew the answer, they were probably the Seraphim. She took the car along a rough track. The cops had clearly been there first but when they reached Jeb’s lonely farm all was quiet.

A/N: Story written for AFF forum weekly prompt 207 - Unique. "unlike anything else", undulate, "move or go with a smooth up-and-down motion", and umbral, "a threshold."

The reference to an angel under Luzurial using a spear is a shout out to a conversation in InBrightestDay's amazing story The Woman in the Statue. Go read that if you want to see a good angel story. Also my thanks to InBrightestDay for looking over this part and the next in an early draft as I wanted to know if something worked!
