Chapter 7
A/N: Yay!! Another Chapter
Chapter 7
I got off my Draken and took in the sight before me. Nosoku’s Isle was the same as I had remembered it. The long bridge that had been made centuries ago with only small hand tools and large trees, extended out across a vast green lake. The bridge was wide enough to fit at least 500 people lengthwise and the thick trees that had been used to forge it were impenetrable. The bottom had been glossed over with what appeared to be slick gold flecks. Only those who had been here knew the flecks were actually small sprites, imbedded and living in the floor of the bridge. Their magics allowed for no human to pass the bridge to the entrance of the Isle. Instead they would continue walking, only to find themselves back in the forest from which they had come.
I walked ahead as Dadakko and Tsukiko rode slowly behind me to cross the bridge. We stopped at the entrance that consisted of a large metal door. The Isle was surrounded by tall windowless white buildings that stretched far into the sky. These acted as a barrier from outside eyes, and a way to protect the Isle from attack. Only breeds that had wings were allowed to live in the buildings and they patrolled the skies regularly, their watchful eyes peering down to spot any unwelcome visitors.
A loud ‘caw’ sounded and the metal door slid open to allow us in. Inside was a bustling city of breeds of all kinds moving to and fro in the streets. There were vendors every so often along the side of the road, selling foods and other trinkets they had collected. The entrance to the Isle was mostly populated by tourists and people new to the area looking for a place to hide and blend in. Beyond the market the houses began to change, taking on a more sophisticated feel and the apartments were exceptionally larger. There was less road traffic and as we moved through the street Tsukiko started to stir. I moved off to the side of the road and Dadakko handed Tsukiko to me as he jumped off. I carried her to a nearby hotel and we got a room.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been a few hours and Tsukiko moaned as she woke up, her head staying rested against the pillow. She grabbed the sheet on the bed to stable herself as she raised her upper body, only to be pressed back into the bed by Dadakko. They whispered for a moment, Dadakko explaining what had happened and where we were now. She looked toward me and I offered her a small smile. She frowned, her expression becoming horrified. Dadakko turned to look at me and ran to me putting his hand over my eyes.
“Dadakko what the—“ I began.
“Your eyes are completely black. Is it time?” He asked.
I cursed and closed my eyes, moving his hand away. It was too soon. I thought the call wouldn’t begin at least for another few days. I breathed for a moment, calming my blood I opened my eyes that had returned to normal.
“Time for what?” Tsukiko asked.
“His Anniversary. He has denied his mate for more than 100 years.” Dadakko explained.
I snarled at him and turned quickly back to the window as Tsukiko let out a loud gasp.
“100 years!?! Traitor, you would cause such pain to your own mate?” She asked.
I started to speak but my words died in my throat. Our Anniversary, I thought bitterly, what a sick joke. An Anniversary for breeds was nothing like anniversaries in the human sense. Though they shared the common meaning of being celebrated on the same day each year and were marked by the beginning of the mating, there was a key difference. Breeds were required to be with their mates during this period of time in order to successfully create children. It was only during this time could a carrier get pregnant and instinctually the body began to call to its mate, forcing the pair into a raging lust that would leave them sated only after they had exhausted their bodies of passion.
I had managed to avoid my Anniversaries by being far enough away from my mate, and in my human form to prevent him from being able to find me. I had invested decades in coming up with a spell strong enough to cloak my scent and spiritual energy so that he could not find me. It had not been easy during those times as my body raged against my actions and my skin would burn for days. Through all of my suffering, I couldn’t help but think that it was even worse for Yasuhiro. As the alpha in our mating he would fly into bloodlust, killing everything in his path to get to me. Males and females that did not have access to their mates and went into a bloodlust during their Anniversary were chained and spellbound in a dungeon deep in the earth of their respective home until the time passed and they returned to normal.
I knew Yasuhiro had not escaped this fate, and I could feel his screams rip through me each year as he called to me. The pain had been intense, stifling at first, but it needed to be done. He had betrayed me and I could not let his plans come to fruition. But now after 100 years, my body had begun to betray me, calling out to him every month, bringing him closer and closer.
How we had met had seemed so unimportant. He was a dark, deep, man who scared me with his raw sexuality and led me closer with this fear. Our love was quick and passionate, and we mated shortly after. I had been in the human world for so little a time after leaving Nosku’s Isle that it had been a relief to find another of my own breed that accepted me even with my status of an exiled prince who had betrayed Anon. I should have known it was all a lie.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shin walked home happily as he carried a surprise bottle of wine in his hands for his mate. The wine was his favorite, a little expensive for a guy who had grown up poor, but Shin didn’t mind or find it odd that his mate had good taste. This would be their first Anniversary together and Shin was extremely nervous. They’d been intimate, but there was never the chance that he’d get pregnant. Their Anniversary was a big step, and it would finally give him a family. Shin had been through too much familial destruction and hoped this time everything would work out.
He bounced happily up the stairs to their apartment door, giggling quietly as he dropped his spiritual pressure and used his void to mask his scent. He did this almost every day, in an effort to surprise his mate, who would always tackle and tickle him. He walked in and closed the door behind him, surprised when he did not immediately see his mate. He searched the house, peaking around the bedroom door to see his mate on the balcony. For a moment Shin hesitated, his mate was talking to himself?
A pale hand rose to Yasuhiro’s cheek and Shin’s eyes widened as familiar white hair came into view, Anon’s face now visible as he moved closer to Yasuhiro.
“Tonight is the night of your Anniversary.” Anon stated.
“Yes. We shall conceive this night.” Yasuhiro responded.
“Mm. And?”
“I will bring the child to you when it is born.”
“Good. Shin must repent for killing my child and running away. He does not understand—“ Anon began.
Shin leaned a little too heavy on the door and it creaked under his weight. Yasuhiro and Anon both looked toward the door, spotting Shin. It was too late however, as the bottle of wine crashed to the floor bursting into a million glass pieces, Shin had already begun running.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I shook the memory off, looking at Tsukiko who had turned to look at Dadakko for more answers.
“I need a drink.” I muttered.
I walked out the door without protest and continued on to the nearest bar. I sat on the closest stool ordering a beer and began to sulk. I had nothing to fear, sure Yasuhiro had found me that one time on the train, but he’d never be able to fine me here. There were too many scents of too many breeds and the Anniversary would only serve to distract his mind from clear enough thought to find me.
“Still a sulky red headed bastard aren’t you.” A booming voice laughed.
“Nosoku!” I said in surprise.
My eyes widened as I turned to greet the man who had created the Isle. He was a burly man with gray hair, sky blue eyes, and a large smile that never left his face. A scar ran down the side of his face from his left eye to his chin, a wound he proudly displayed. His scar had been the reason he created the Isle, but he never told anyone why or how he had gotten the vicious looking scar. We hugged and he ordered us another round of beers.
He had found me, huddled in any alleyway, dirty, scared and covered in dried blood. I didn’t have anywhere to go and being so young I had no money for food or shelter. He had taken me in, fed me, clothed me, gave me a job bussing tables at a nearby diner he frequented nearly every day. He was my first real friend outside of my life as a prince and had accepted me without even knowing who I was. To him I was a starving child near death and that was all he needed to know. He gestured to his son standing behind him and I turned, surprised that I had not noticed him. He was a copy of his father in their gray hair and blue eyes, but where his father had fat, he had hard muscles. He was still young, but older than me, and glared at me before turning to grab his own mug of beer.
He and I had never gotten along, but Nosoku never minded. ‘Soku’s never been into sharing things.’, Nosoku had said once referring to his son. This had been after a nasty fight between Soku and me as children. Soku felt as though I was taking his father away and when he had made a comment about my father I punched him in the jaw. I smirked as I remembered that I had won that fight.
“Well I’ll leave you kids to it. Got Isle business and all. Good seeing you Shin.” Nosoku said.
He rose from his seat, giving me a warm pat on the back before leaving Soku and I sitting at the bar. He stared at me for a long moment before getting up and leaving. I sat at the bar a while longer by myself before getting up and heading out. The cool night air greeted me and I welcomed it on my heated skin. I could feel my scales shivering in need and I dove into an alleyway. The heat that I thought had been from drinking exploded over my body, making my skin tingle.
It couldn’t be happening now!
I braced myself against the stone wall and looked up into the night sky. The full red moon seemed to laugh at me from its position high in the sky. My knees buckled and I fell heavily into a hard chest, my hands throbbing, I grabbed the clothed arm of whoever had grabbed me and looked up to thank them. My body froze, seizing up and releasing in a magnificent display. My scales spread faster than ever, covering my neck and spreading into my hair, shimmering madly. My eyes swirled black, my claws became sharper, my scent becoming thicker in the air. I was lifted into the arms of the one who had grabbed me and lust filled eyes glared at me with the rage of 100 years as we faded from existence, moving through the streets at incredible speeds. My mind descended into instinct and I clawed at his arms, angry that he dared to be wearing clothes at all. He looked at me, his hand caressing my cheek as I whispered his name before we disappeared into the woods.
Geez this took me forever.
