June 6, 1998
I craned my neck to try and see the line of the last student go up and get their diploma. Graduation it seemed like an eternity, a big eternity. I glanced back to see Justin and Lucy sitting two rows behind me. I was up in the front due to the CSF gold seal and the 4.0 I had manage to keep up all four years. Justin winked at me as I smiled coyly at him. Too bad I was stuck celebrating graduation with my parents. I had better ideas on how to celebrate my freedom from the institution, which was a bit ironic because I'm already enrolled to continue at another institution. Four years of another hell. So much for taking a year off, the minute I heard congratulation class of 98 I ran out of my seat. I jumped on Justin and kissed him, then after ward I hugged Lucy as I muttered a congratulation. Soon my mother was bear tackling me. I kept the anger in and I saw Justin and Lucy sneak away as I smiled at Dad and Lucas. “Mom okay I get it,” I breathed out. The real countdown began, the days the weeks the months until I moved out to the dorms. That was what I really wanted. I wanted to leave get away, I hated the suffocation, my mother had me trapped in this forever image of me being a little girl. If she only knew of all the shit I've done.
Of course if she did know I would be in a nun convent or some tyrannical location like that.
Of course we headed to a fancy restaurant that was packed with other graduates who were celebrating. I swear could one not foresee the similarities of this day. Yet I smiled, I mingled, I joked and I tolerated the rest of the day and once again in my room I hid and just contemplated sneaking out. I had done it once before, did I want to risk it. Yeah I did, but was I going to, no. I wasn't going to screw up my chances of college for a risky quicky. I did like Justin, my mother liked Justin, oh I know she did, I was also betting she was hoping for a high school sweethearts forever shit.
It was a little too much, my mother was trying to mold me into this person as if she was afraid I was going to be something else. I felt it, I hated it but I still loved her, she's my momma. I can't deny her.
Ellie looked up from the pages as she re-called when her mother told her about her pranks in high school, if from these pages Maggie seemed more controlling and strict, how would she tolerated a prank like that. She needed her previous diaries, but knew she hid those somewhere else. After High school it was another sort of section in life so she started a new diary she remembered that much. She knew she didn't even finished the old one and started all over again. Only this time she kept the following books close and hid them where she felt comfortable to write a lot of things.
'If I did a prank like that,' Ellie thought most likely I would have been punished maybe grounded for a very long time. Maybe that's why I snucked out, but who the fuck is Justin.
Ellie wracked her brains but not even a faint feeling or memory. Who ever Justin was he didn't exist, but Lucy on the other hand. They went to different colleges but they stayed in contact through other means.
Maggie entered the room as she looked around expectantly hoping to see Mel, she really didn't want to drive out and find her, but it seemed that was the only way she was going to catch her by surprise.
“Hey sweetie how you doing?” Maggie greeted as she bent down and kissed Ellie's forehead.
“Just here, I won't be discharge tomorrow as expected.” Ellie frowned as she closed the book.
“what's that?” Maggie asked reaching for it, but Ellie moved it under her covers and smiled shyly, “It's my diary Mel brought it over, she says it might help my memories.”
Maggie for a second growled but quickly smiled patting Ellie's hand as she chuckled. “yeah that's great.”
Ellie was getting tired of this feud Mel and her Mother had. One it was annoying and two what was the big deal. She thought after so many years her mother should of accepted her, unless...
“hey mom?” Maggie smiled and gave her undivided attention to her only daughter.
“I work right?” Ellie wondered if she worked, if she did, wouldn't anyone from where she worked be here or be wondering why she hadn't showed up to work.
“Yeah, don't worry sweetie Your father and I took care of that, we just think its best not to be bombarded with a lot people you just merely work with.” Maggie smiled reassuringly.
“Just work with, Ma for all I know I have very good friends. I won't know unless I see em or ya know.” Ellie wasn't feeling too comfortable with her mother decisions.
Maggie kept eye-ing Ellie's Diary, she wanted to peer into it. She knew her daughter had them, but she never had a chance to peek into them. One thing Ellie was exceptionally good at was keeping secrets.
``````````````````
Mel ran from the backyard when she heard the faint ringing of the house phone. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as she answered.
“hello?”
“Melissa hey it's John Burke how are you this morning?” Mel pondered quickly and then looked around finding a small frame, in it Ellie and her coworkers were posing for their annual picnic day.
“John how you've been I'm sorry I haven't called ya sooner. I've been-”
“No no no don't worry about it, Elizabeth's mother called me a few days ago, but I was out of town and I just barely got the message and I'm so sorry, if there is anything we can do to help please don't hesitate to call us.”
“John thank you very much, I wasn't aware Maggie was doing those phone calls, I would have rather spoken to you in person, but thank you very much. I can speak to you in person when ever your free so we can discuss Ellie's situation.”
“Yeah sure no problem, I can have her on unpaid leave that the only way I can do it and have her keep her job till she gets back.”
“Yeah about that, I'm not sure the extent of her recovery. I mean physically she's doing great but-” Mel closed her eyes, she couldn't help but feel useless trying to save Ellie's career. It was a small business but it was a solid business. They were financial advisers, mostly to small businesses.
“Say no more, look Mel I'll have Ellie's things put in the office storage, when ever you wanna come down here and talk to me so we can make an arrangement fine with me.”
“Ok thanks John,”
“hey remember I'm in no hurry for you to come over and get her things,” John insinuated he didn't have any plans to give up on Ellie and Mel was thankful for that.
“All right talk to you later,”
Mel bid her farewell and sighed, one thing to check off the list. Mel sighed as she looked around the house it still was clean. She dusted a little but she didn't really need to do much, except what ever work she did in her room.
The doorbell rang and Mel took another deep breath, she was mostly running on coffee and four hours of sleep. It was a pain, but when ever she laid down to sleep, she would stare at the dark ceiling for hours until she finally would just doze out.
She opened the door to see a tall woman maybe 5'11 dark brown hair, she was in C.N.A uniform, “I'm going to take a wild guess and say your Melissa.” she smiled as she extended her hand.
Mel shook it, and smiled back as she stepped back to let her in.
“I'm Angie Thales, I know weird last name, I got assigned your case file,” She smiled brightly as Mel nodded.
They both stood awkwardly in the living room, Mel nodded as she looked around as she felt weird. She was never good at meeting new people.
“Do you have a problem with same sex couples?” Mel blurted out and then reeled at the bluntness of it.
'smooth you idiot,' she scolded herself.
Angie smiled as she was taken back a bit by the question, “no, I was forewarned but I don't care whose doing it with who, you know what I mean.” She winked at Mel and Mel swallowed hard.
“I'm sorry I'll behave, but I bet you rather have me than some prude with a stick shoved up their ass.”
At that Mel chuckled, “Point taken.”
“All right tour of the house?” Angie asked as she pointed down the hallway.
“Yeah, here the kitchen,” Mel pointed in the direction of the dinning room and Angie nodded as caught a glimpse of the fridge in the way back, “here's the small bathroom,” Mel open the door as Angie peeked her head in and then caught up to Mel as she opened the master bedroom at the end of the hallway.
“this is where Ellie is gonna be set up and that door is the closet and that one is to the bathroom.” Mel stood in the middle of the room pointing at certain things.
Angie looked at the decoration in the room, they weren't glamorous or extravagant. Some how small and simple made the room look real elegant. There was a painting of lone sailboat stuck in the middle of a deadly storm.
Angie stared at it and marveled at all the dark colors yet the sailboat stood out brightly.
“You like it,” Mel noticed and smile as Angie nodded.
“How much was it,”
“All the paints I used I guess twenty bucks in total.” Mel shrugged her shoulders that was the only good thing she painted. The last thing she painted actually.
“shut up, your a painter?” Angie was mouth wide open astounded.
Mel laughed, “I'm a graphic designer actually, I only painted in college.” Mel nodded as she extended her hand and led the way back to the living room.
Angie followed and she sat on the sofa as she opened the backpack she was carrying.
She pulled out a clipboard with papers and started to write.
“Ok let me re-verify some information.” Angie said as she re-organized.
“Melissa Diaz, correct?” Mel nodded as she tried to make out what the papers said.
“Ok and Elizabeth McMullen right?” Mel nodded as she fidgeted with her hands.
“Ok date of birth for Elizabeth is May 19 1980?”
“yup,” Mel confirmed as they went through all the things Angie was supposed to do.
Which consisted that on weekdays she would be in charge of Ellie's medication, hygiene care, and Just so happened Angie was also the physical therapist.
“Ah multi task-er,” commented Mel she nodded as she was handed a copy of the schedule that was set.
“Well give me a call when the hospital discharges her and I'll be here that evening to help ya get set up.” Angie stood up as she grabbed her backpack, she extended her hand as Mel shook it.
“pleasure meeting ya,” Angie smiled brightly as she made her way out of the house into a little green KIA. Mel waved as she pulled out of the drive way.
Mel was about to close the door when she notice an all too familiar Big Red Truck.
“Fucking shoot me, will ya God?” Mel prayed as she waited by the door as Maggie pulled up.
“Evening,” She called out as Maggie politely smiled at her as she made her way across the yard to the front door.
“Melissa,” Maggie responded as she made it through the front door.
“what brings ya here?” Mel asked as she followed her in, she plopped herself on the couch, Maggie gently sat on the edge.
She rarely visited, but she had to admit it was a quaint little home. Ellie deserved more Maggie concluded as she finally cleared her throat.
“I heard you've hired help to take care of Ellie when she gets home.”
Mel sucked on her lower lip and nodded.
“Some stranger to take care of Ellie while I could perfectly-,” Maggie calmed herself she was raising her voice, but she needed to keep things civil.
“Look Maggie I need help and I rally don't think your help is let's say adequate.” Mel held her breath waiting for it.
“I am more than capable of taking care of my daughter,” she seethed.
“Maggie you want to control your daughter not just take care of her. And anyways You live like twenty miles away from us, your telling me your planning to drive everyday back and forth.”
Maggie chuckled, “Who said driving back and forth,”
Mel eyes went wide as she shot up from her seat, “No you are not living here.” Mel quickly retorted.
“You don't own this house,”
“the hell I don't?” Mel shook her head adamantly.
“Ask Ellie, shouldn't it be her ultimate decision, she agreed to come home here why can't I ask her if I can come live here for a while.”
'Because she won't say no to you,' Mel thought.
Mel thought she was going to pop a blood vessel, she felt a coronary heart attack about to happen. She realized her breathing was labored.
“My rules Maggie no exceptions you understand?”
Maggie just smiled.
“MY FUCKING RULES MAGGIE ,” Mel was mad, if Maggie thought she was getting away with this. She then really underestimated Mel.
Maggie jumped internally never had Mel raised her voice so high to her.
“UNDERSTAND?”
Maggie nodded as she realized her hand were clench together and extremely sweaty.
