If Like Repels Like, Do Opposites Attract?: Chapter 7

So in the week after the back-rub turned tickling to almost kissing incident, Sam was going through a kissing crisis. Now that the thought was in his head, he couldn’t seem to get it out. He’d merely think of Chad and his brain would go right to kissing, how Chad’s mouth would feel, what kind of kisser he would be. It was frustrating.

While Sam had previously had a crush on Tony, it was nothing like thinking of Chad. With Tony, he’d always been attracted, for years It had been an instant physical attraction and grew as he got to know him better and thought he was so edgy and cool…well up until the whole bet and outing thing.

Chad…his attraction to Chad kind of snuck up on him. He noticed that Chad was attractive, but he hadn’t actively been wanting him. Not until they had been pressed chest to chest, so close together. And he liked him. Chad was so laid back and honest in his demeanor. He was like the opposite of Tony, the opposite of everything Sam thought he wanted in a guy, but somehow he’d gotten under his skin.

And he felt like he was being awkward around Chad. Chad hadn’t seemed to notice that something was bugging him, but Alyssa, ever intuitive, seemed to be picking up on the fact that something was off.

Alyssa had been shooting him looks all week, until on Friday, she yanked him aside at lunch time. Chad and Todd had lunch-time basketball practice instead of after-school practice again to get them prepped for the Saturday game, so Sam was alone with her.

“Okay, what is up with you this week? And don’t say nothing!” She pointed her finger at him. “I know something is up. You’ve been weird all week.”

Sam scuffed his feet in the dirt. “Do I have to talk about it?”

“Ummmmm Yes!” She playfully punched him in the arm. “Seriously, what’s going on.”

“Well…a week ago I gave Chad a backrub. Then I started tickling him and we ended up really close and now I want to kiss him,” Sam blurted it out all in one go.

“Oh. That’s it? I thought you were going through some kind of crisis.”

“What? How is this not a crisis?”

She shot him a pointed look. “I can’t believe you just asked me that.”

Sam just felt puzzled. “What?”

“Guys are so clueless.” She threw her hands up in the air. “That’s all I can say!”

Sam tried to convince her to say more on the subject, but she wouldn’t for the rest of the lunch period.

After school, Sam didn’t head to the art room like he usually did. He just wanted to be by himself and his thoughts. He took the long way home, passing the skateboard park. He slowed, watching Tony and the other skateboarders pulling tricks. He didn’t stay long. They didn’t seem to notice him there, but he didn’t want to take the chance for trouble.

As he continued walking, he heard a vehicle slowing behind him. His heart began to pound, adrenaline and fight or flight response kicking in, until he realized that it was Chad’s truck pulling up to the curb.

“Hey Sam! Hop in!” Chad called out to him.

He hesitated, awkwardly on the sidewalk, then pulled open the passenger side door. He didn’t know how to refuse without looking like a complete douche.

Chad flipped on his signal and pulled back onto the road. “I went to the art room, but Ms. Rosenburg said you hadn’t been by,” he glanced at Sam.

“Uh, yeah. Didn’t feel like drawing today.”

“Sam…” Chad’s voice was low and serious. “Did you just not want me to give you a ride?”

“No,” Sam answered quickly.

“I feel like you don’t want to be around me. Did I do something?” Chad sounded slightly hurt and Sam was surprised by the conversation. Chad never struck him as a ‘let’s talk about our feelings’ kind of guy.

“No. I…no.” Sam wasn’t sure what else to say.

Chad suddenly turned down a gravelly road.

“Chad, where are we going?” Sam felt a little on edge by the change in direction.

“Place I go sometimes to think. It’s cool.” Chad reassured him.

As he drove, the road became bumpier and there were more trees than open spaces. They pulled up to an extremely large boulder and rock mountain and Chad put the truck in park.

“Come on.”

Chad led Sam over to the boulder and helped him climb up the steep rocks to the top. When they stopped climbing, Sam gasped at the beautiful view. The way they were overlooking the town made Sam feel as if they were on top of the world. They sat down, legs hanging over the rock’s edge.

“I never even knew this place existed. It’s fantastic,” Sam told him.

Chad grinned at him. “Yeah? I hoped you’d like it.”

They sat for a few minutes in silence, that stretched from comfortable to a little tense.

“Sammy…Are you okay?” Chad asked.

“Yeah.”

“If you ever need anything, you know all you have to do is ask. If anyone or anything is bothering you, I’ll help you out.”

“You really are sweet and sensitive,” Sam blurted out Alyssa’s description of Chad.

Chad blushed a little, glancing away. “Thanks?”

“It was a compliment. I…I really am glad that we’re friends, that we talk.”

Chad smiled, “Me too Sam.”

He reached out and brushed some of Sam’s hair out of his face, allowing his thumb to brush Sam’s cheek. I was a very intimate gesture and Sam’s breath involuntarily hitched in his throat.

Chad noticed the change in Sam’s composure and drew back. “Sorry,” he apologized.

“It’s okay.” Right…okay… it only made Sam want to kiss him that much more. Why did Chad have to be so attractive without even knowing it? Why did Sam suddenly want him all the time?

They sat in a slightly awkward silence until Chad suggested they get back into the truck.

“Thanks for showing me your spot,” Sam said as they pulled back onto the bumpy gravel.

“I wanted to show you. I bet you could do some great pictures from there.”

“Would you want one?” Sam offered.

Chad stopped the truck and turned to face Sam. “Seriously? You’d make me a picture?”

“Yeah definitely.”

Chad grinned. “That’s awesome.”

And suddenly he was in Sam’s space, pressing his back against the door, tilting his chin up, bringing their lips together.

The first touch was soft, almost a question, then when Sam let out a soft moan against Chad’s mouth, it became more intense. Chad had one hand against Sam’s jaw, the other in his hair as if to hold him in place as his mouth moved over Sam’s. Teeth scraped Sam’s lower lip, urging Sam’s lips to part. When Sam opened his mouth, Chad made a groaning sound in his throat and deepened the kiss.

Sam hadn’t ever been kissed like this. Embarrassingly enough, his only kiss had been the fake one from Tony.

But this was nothing like that. The previous didn’t even compare to the current kiss. This was smoking hot, mouths and tongues and nipping teeth. Chad seemed to really like pulling at Sam’s lower lip with his teeth and chasing away the slight hurt with his tongue, which was good because Sam really liked when he did it.

With one last nip, Chad released Sam’s lower lip and drew back. They were both breathing faster and heavier. Sam was half-hard in his pants just from a kiss and he wondered if Chad was feeling the same.

“I…Want to come to my house?” Chad’s voice was rougher than normal.

Sam nodded and Chad began to drive again, Sam’s mouth still sensitive and the burn from Chad’s stubble on his face the proof that what happened really happened.
