Play the Truth

CH 7

Vespat continued to stare at her, Jocelyn tempted to just reach for the glasses on his face and remove them to prevent him from possibly hurting her. Yet, the expression on his face wasn't the one someone would give if they were about to possibly maul you or burn you alive with the spell he used to stave off the beast.

She could feel her pulse rise up into her throat, even more so as he leaned a little closer.

"Just who are you woman…To bounce back from these odds against you and work things around to be wrapped around your finger…"He said, his face confused. "Any other person, in either dimension, would surely have died of pure fright or given into the odds against them."

Was that it? "I…don't think you understand individual humans very well then."She said as she swallowed a little as the elf edged a little closer.

"What makes you so different?"He probed.

That was a good question. Jocelyn let the question dwindle in her head a little while, digging around her experiences and snide remarks. "Because I got tired to being shoved aside compared to some little goodie goodie in stiletto heels and made to quietly sit back while everything worked against me in some way."She said, narrowing her eyes at him. "And I wasn't about to let some elf-man from another dimension do that too."

"I'm an Elfling."He corrected, leaning in much closer. "So you think I was going to take advantage of your work? If I recall, you were going to do the same with mine."

"In comparison, it looks like we have the same goals anyway."Jocelyn said as she moved further back, practically almost sitting on the sink to push herself away. Ves noticed her motions but it was amusing him to see her react like she was. Her face was red and flushed, her head pressed against the mirror.

"Do we?"Ves teased, his head tilting a little. Now she had nowhere to run.

However, a loud screeching sound from the kitchen made him recoil, holding his ears. Jocelyn scrambled from the sink, darting around him to go turn off the oven's alarm. Vespat cringed until the sound stopped, going back to the kitchen. Jocelyn was leaned over, putting the meat into the oven.

"Your home is small but everything makes that horrible noise."He seethed a little, going back to his station, starting to frustratingly peel the potatoes again.

"Sorry…"She said lowly, collecting the potatoes he had peeled and sticking them in a pot with boiling water.

"It's fine."Ves said as he washed another one, peeling it and walking over to the pot to drop it in. He wasn't finished with what he wanted to do in the bathroom and she wasn't going to get away being cornered against the counter again.

"W-what are you doing?"Jocelyn asked as she spun around, Ves pinning her by putting his arms on either side of her.

~*"Taking advantage of a goal in mind…"*~He whispered softly in his native tongue, Jocelyn's hair raising on the back of her neck. She inhaled sharply, feeling a warm and wet pair of lips touch hers. Her eyes closed tightly, gripping at the counter behind her as she felt the lips move slowly, lightly brushing against hers, teasing.

"Wh-what did I say about foreign gibber?"Jocelyn sputtered, trying to deter him. This wasn't right.

~*"I don't care."*~Ves said, pecking his lips at hers briefly before moving away and heading out of the kitchen to retreat for now.

She stood there, half draped over the counter trying to hold herself up. What the hell was THAT? First he's trying to come on to her, then the next he doesn't. Then he tries again, succeeds and then just waltzes right off like it's nothing. Just WHAT was he trying to do in the first place? Whatever it was, she would get an answer after cooking the dinner that Ves left her stranded to finish.

Jocelyn set the table, putting the scraps in containers and going to seek Vespat out. She looked around the apartment and found nothing. She checked on the discus and found that it was still locked away safely. However, the window to the room where the discus was kept was wide open, the curtains fluttering around like etherial spirits. Frowning, she peeked out the window, looking up to see if he was on the fire escape though figured that he had made his way upwards to the roof. Squirming out of the window, she made her way upwards, peeking over the side. Vespat was nowhere to be seen but she looked up to an air-conditioning unit and saw him perched there, looking up to the sky.

"Ves?"She called out, climbing onto the roof and looking up to him. The elf was entranced by the sky though acknowledged her by answering.

"Days here are the same…so is the moon. I wish it would move faster…"He said as he looked down.

"Too bad it can't or you'd be home already. Dinner is ready."She said as she turned back to the ladder of the roof. She heard Ves land back down on the gravel of the roof, trailing back behind her. She stopped at the ladder, hearing him stop right behind her.

"Is something the matter?"He asked.

"Yeah…just one thing."Jocelyn said as she gripped the handles of the ladder, looking over her shoulder. "You're a horrible kisser."

"So you were thinking about it." Oh how he wished he could have stayed longer to see her face.

"Of course I was! I'm stern but that doesn't mean I'm not surprised by some things."Jocelyn said as she stepped over the edge, turning and going down the ladder, Ves right behind her.

"Right right…"He chuckled throatily.

Downstairs was less awkward and Jocelyn enjoyed teasing him about his attempts to seduce. Ves turned a shade of maroon in his cheeks, retorting that he was inexperienced though it just made her laugh a little harder. As they cleaned up, it grew a little quieter, Ves drying the dishes as she washed them

"What is it with your attitude over a kiss hm? Did your fiance ever kiss you at all?"He snorted.

"He did. He was an excellent kisser."Jocelyn said quite proudly.

"Then you have had experience?"Vespat said, leaning to the side slightly.

"Of course…"She said as she handed him the last plate. "Why wouldn't I have experience? I'm in my twenties, nearly thirty. I've had only a few other boyfriends in my younger years but Allen was my last."Jocelyn sighed as she dried her hands. "I miss him…"

Vespat's nose scrunched some, putting the dish away and stepping closer to her in just one step. "What if there were someone else after him?"He inquired. "Would you miss him still?"

Jocelyn frowned, looking over to him. "I don't think anyone could replace him…"She said as she stepped away. "I'm going to get dessert ready. Go sit in the living room, I think a new magazine came into the mail today."

That cheered the Elfling up a little, watching him dart off to the living room to go read it. Whatever it was in those magazines he liked, he always looked forward to the new magazine that came out. Shaking her head, she pulled the cake she had baked early from the refrigerator to frost it and sprinkle some sweet sugar on top.

Glued to the magazine, Ves didn't notice that she had come with a big slice for him, standing there holding two plates. She set both of them down, Jocelyn pulled the magazine from his hands and pressed her lips to his and replaced the magazine with a slice of cake from the table. "Desserts ready."She said after she stopped kissing him.

Her lips tasted like chocolate. Licking his own, he watched her sit down across the room with her slice. Sweet Goddess…His face felt like it was on fire. The cake didn't look as appetizing anymore and he set it down, picking up the magazine again.

As the later hours fell, the apartment fell dead silent. Ves stood under the shower, running his fingers through his hair. Outside the shower, he slid the glasses back on, wiping his hand across the mirror. He noticed in the fog just how human he looked with his ears flattened back underneath his hair though he still had those distinguishing features that made him Elfling.

Smooth skin, long fair hair that went wispy blonde down towards the ends. The bright boldly colored stripe that usually matched their eyes. Running his fingers through his wet hair, he gathered his dirty hair and sauntered off to his room where his night clothes sat from the week before. Since the attack, he had slept with the human woman but that night had been awkward for the both of them.

Slipping just the pants on, he slid into bed, hugging the pillows. 'Could I…?'
