Chapter Seven
“Come in!” called Kai from the living room. He was making sure he had all that he needed for his vacation. He was taking an inventory of clothing when somebody knocked on the door.
“Hi. Are you going somewhere?” said Aiden from the doorway.
“ Aiden! I am so glad you came by. I knew Leian would pull through. Um, yeah, I’m off to Wisconsin for a few weeks. A little holiday from real, if you know what I mean. So, it’s been a while. I was worried about you. I…I missed you.”
“What’s in Wisconsin?” asked Aiden, smiling internally when Kai had mentioned that he had missed him.
“A lot of cheese. You know how much I love cheese. But I think we need to talk first. Want to go into the kitchen?”
“Yes, cheese. Ha ha. Yeah, we do need to talk. Kitchen sounds great,” agreed Aiden. This was the part that he had been dreading. He now had to face Kai. The night outside of the hospital was not how he had planned for things to go and now he had to fix them.
“So, I dumped Dylan after we left the hospital that night. It wasn’t really a relationship anyway. He came over and it just led to sex. Anyway, when you kissed me..I wanted so badly to kiss you back. You don’t know this but that night when we played at Daisy’s, we kissed. I started kissing you and you didn’t resist. I felt bad, because I knew you wouldn’t remember it but I just felt so great when you were in my arms. I have loved you since the day we met. It sounds corny but I think we belong together. We go together like ice cream and sprinkles. And you have always been there for me, whenever, whatever I needed you helped me through. You’ve paid my part of the rent when I was broke, you’ve paid for the repairs on my guitar, you do everything for Fuzz, and I’m not sure I could function without you. I mean, look at me! I’m a mess right now, I’m distraught and nothing seems right. What I am trying to say is that I love…” at this point Kai was sobbing. He couldn’t complete his soliloquy for the spasms shaking his entire body. Aiden ran over to him.
“Oh don’t cry! Don’t cry!” and he began to kiss away Kai’s tears. All along he had been the blind one. He hadn’t noticed that Kai had wanted him. “I love you too. I love you. I love you. I love you.”
The two boys were a sight to see. they sat in the floor of the kitchen, embracing one another. Both of them were crying, both of them were repeating “I love you”, and both were shocked when an alarm began to ring.
“Shit! I have to go. Can you drive me to the airport?”asked Kai.
“Airport? Why do you need to- Oh. You’re going to Wisconsin. Right. Do you have to go? I mean….we just confessed our love to one another and now you’re flying halfway across the country.”
“I can’t just cancel. I’ll be back in two weeks. We’ll over-compensate for lost time when I get back. I’m sorry, honey, but I have to go. It’ll be good for me.”
“Yes, I’ll drive you. But you had better keep your offer of overcompensation or you’ll have one angry boyfriend to deal with.”
“Boyfriend? You aren’t my boyfriend, Aiden.”
“…I’m not? Then what am I to you?” said Aiden, pushing Kai away.
“Love, you are my fiancé. We are WAY past the whole dating phase.”
“Fian…Fiance?”
“Unless you want it any other way….”
“Of course I don’t! Get over here you hot piece of ass!!” squealed Aiden.
“Wait! We have to go or I’ll miss my flight.”
“Fine! We’ll go.”
The airport was thirty minutes away from the couple’s apartment. The entire trip, Kai never took his eyes off of Aiden. And Aiden barely looked at the road. He was constantly stealing glances of Kai in the rear-view mirror.
“I still don’t like that you’re leaving,” complained Aiden at the terminal gate. “We could do so many things in two weeks,” said Aiden innocently, toying with the strings on Kai’s shirt.
“Waiting is half the fun, love. I bet you’ll shiver with anticipation the entire two weeks. Plus, we both have webcams so…..we’ll have fun,” hinted Kai with a wink.
“Flight 45 leaving for Sheboygan now boarding; take-off in ten minutes,” came a female voice through the loudspeaker.
“I guess this is where we say goodbye,” said Aiden.
“Don’t make this an afternoon special now,” joked Kai. “I think it’s too late though.” He took Aiden’s face in his hands and pulled him to his mouth. Their lips met for a brief ten seconds, a soft, unforgettable ten seconds while they shared their first kiss as a couple. “See you in two weeks,” said Kai, his mouth still on Aiden’s. He let his lips brush up Aiden’s cheek bone and then turned to board his plane.
