back to one
My name is Nyth Nora Wolf and I come from a place and a time where humans and animals have become one.
I know it’s hard to believe. Let me explain how my world came to be.
The year was 2000. Earth was dying.
Humankind was ether rapidly depleted. The population had been cut to a third when Dr. Mason Humphreys set out to find a way for humans to continue existence. Time was too short, and it was becoming increasingly obvious that if humans were to stay frail, fragile creatures, all hope would be lost. Humphreys and his team of students theorized that a different form, one that would let them become stronger, more capable, was what humanity needed. His team, along with aid from labs all over the world, collected DNA from every animal still struggling to survive, and some that were long dead. They used their DNA and those of the animals to create the new genetic blueprint for the future.
As their children grew in the test tubes the future for our world brightened. Those children became our parent. They grew into adults and were placed into suspended sleep until all of the earth changes were complete. Despite this brilliant new legacy, the doctor and his team were forced to watch as the remainder of humans that hadn’t been genetically modified died away slowly. One by one, he and his team were all subject to agonizing deaths.
Nevertheless, they’d accomplished something. Human DNA recombinant with that of animals, sealed away until the Earth was reborn. A machine built by the scientists documented every change until the world had settled once more. When it was time, a massive earthquake marked the final great change, the machine broke, signaling the end of suspension for our parents. They lived like animals for a while, but from the recordings carefully preserved by the long gone scientists and their own higher than average intellect, they learned of their history. Humans had disturbed the harmony of the Great Spirit Mother Earth, and so they were left to inherit the ruins. The key was not to repeat humanity’s mistakes again.
Our parents saw to that and for years upon years our world was at peace. They refined technology left to us from the old days. They learned to walk and talk and appear more human. Some left their fur and muzzles behind, while others decided they’d been born as perfect recombinants, honored additions to any household. They were known as anthros. These were mostly males with a second, inherent ability to have children themselves, allowing them to pass on the prized genes. Taboos that had been established and written in stone in the old world were done away with; marriages no longer were based off sex but on a bonding of the soul. Two males procreating was thought to strengthen the blood.
I live on the sole remaining continent, Ucopia. There are four capitals, each in the cardinal directions; North, South, East, and West. All are connected by a larger landmass known only as the neutral land. The neutral is where our kind were given birth, the area where the labs once stood so many years ago.
Each capital has a royal family. There are kings and queens imbued with the sacred duty to rule without repeating the mistakes of the past.
It all came to an end too quickly.
King Shinjitsu of the Southern lands bedded one of his royal whores, more kindly known as concubines. This woman bore a son by the name of Sa’trin von Diablo. His wife Candi in turn gave him three sons and one daughter, Alexia. At the exact same time, I was created. An heir to the Eastern skies was born then as well, and the Northern kingdom was blessed with the adoption of a four year old child. He was an anthro male by the name of Kai Lee. The West too was with child; twin boys named Mica and Mickaela. Mickaela bore an unfortunate curse at birth.
The bounty seemed like a boon to all the great kingdoms until the day King Shinji’s wife died in childbirth with Alexia. With the loss of his love, he went mad. He declared war on the Eastern skies, his wife’s homeland, claiming that the people there could have done more to prepare her for Alexia’s painful labor. Then he declared war on the Western lands as well, saying that they were insensitive to his loss, steamrolling over it in favor of political matters. He fought and battled, all the while raising his daughter the way he thought her mother would have. She knew nothing of the war being waged around her; she was happy and loving, and most of all innocent.
As Alexia grew, she would wander to the neutral lands, where she would meet her friends. Their names were Erik and of course, me. They would play hide and seek, a game formed more for practicing guerilla warfare than creating laughter. The jumping, rough play, and excitement of the game appealed more to the animal side of the children than anything else. Since the declaration of war it had been taught to every child in the kingdom until they could be officially whisked away to training camp for a year of education in warfare.
But this day Alexia found a different boy. He was odd looking and his clothes were ragged. He looked the same age as her middle brother. Not knowing who he really was, she was kind to the boy until she returned to her father’s land.
Years passed. The king was out on one of his many raids. In his absence, Sa’trin went on a killing spree. Drew, last of the king’s sons, was found in a lake. His body was shredded and thrown into the water. It took weeks to find all his parts. His remains had no teeth, his tongue had been cut out, and he’d been scalped. The poor man’s wife was unlucky enough to be barren; so there were no heirs to remember him.
Shiji once again went mad with grief at the news. Losing his son was like losing parts of his loving wife all over again.
The following month, Allen, his second son was found tied to a tree. His appendages had been amputated; hands, feet, and even his penis. He’d been stabbed numerous times, and a note reading ‘love everyone equally’ was carved into his chest. The king was going insane. His final son, his final male heir had to be protected at all costs.
Yet again, a month later on Sa’trin’s seventeenth birthday, a man walked through the castle via hidden passages He then heads over to where to where Antonio slept he watched as he and waiting till the time came where he would kill Antonio and take whatever was his, Sa’trin slipped in and cut his brothers throat from ear to licking the blood from the blade.
My mother sent a messenger to the king offering one of us as a tool to be used to ensure peace. Yet Sa’trin had other plans. He was the bastard child of the king and only male heir left to inherit. That could only happen if the king died.
On Sa'trin’s 18th birthday my brother was sent to marry the south kings’ only daughter, Alexia.
He never made it to the altar. The news of his death hurt my mother beyond words. Our lands became dark. There were storms for months as her heart slowly broke.
I left with Erik to find my brother’s murderer. My rage too was dark as night, and hate for this killer ran deep as hell itself. Erik became scared of the person I was becoming, but with him by my side I never lost focus.
Meanwhile, the king had lost everything dear to him; his wife, his sons, and his people who turned their back on his grief. He was slowly losing himself. Sa’trin knocked on his chamber door, and without knowing, the king let in his executioner.
“Father I have come to take my place as king,” Sa’trin said.
The king replied, “Like hell you crazy son of a bitch.”
“But all your sons are dead, and soon you will join them. You have no say in the matter,” smiling widely, he approached the king. Sa’trin slid his blade from the sheath behind his back. The king reached for his own knife, only just blocking one attack and then another.
“Father, I didn’t have this hard a time killing my brothers”
“You? You are the one who has been killing my children? You are the one who kept this war going? Are you insane? I should have killed you when you were born”
“Well, that isn’t a very nice thing to say. I will forgive you, if you just die and let me rule”
The fight continued until Alexia pounded on the door calling for her father to open up. He was busy trying to stay alive when he tripped over something that had fallen earlier. Sa’ tarin took that chance to cut off his head. When he opened the door it was to see Alexia, staring with wide eyes at the boy she’d met years before; standing with her father’s head clutched in his grip.
Sa’trin murmured, “Here is you father, but I don’t think he will have much to say.”
He walked past his sister with the head still swinging, heading to the throne room to claim his birth right. He was now king of the land and had everything he wanted even his soon to temporary queen Mary Until he could take the real prize. Me.
