I’m sorry my computer was acting up and somehow I accidently deleted a couple reviews. *gives a sheepish laugh* but anyways hope you enjoy the story.
In this chapter it goes from the past to the present.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A child walked down the hall. He was dragging a bag behind him. A younger looking Liam walked out of a room to find the child. The child was four feet and nine inches, he had on a black sleeveless shirt and a pair of pants, “Luka what are you doing with that bag?”
The boy looked up, “Nothing.” He tried to move faster only to trip over his feet. “Stupid bag.” Luka watched as Liam bent down and picked it up. He pulled on the zipper, “No don’t open it.” A dog jumped out at Liam and ran off. Liam looked over at Luka only to see him running after the dog.
“Luka Calder Zander, you get back here right now!”
Luka stopped and turned around, “Not right now, she’s hurt.” The boy ran after the dog, he ran down the hallways and skidded around corners. The dog ran outside onto a hanging bridge, once outside Luka glanced around, trees were everywhere, with walkways that stretched from tree to tree. He saw the dog running across another walkway. Rushing passed people, who yelled at him to watch out, he finally was able to catch up with the dog.
Luka dove and grabbed the dog, tucked and rolled hitting some crates. “Owie that hurt.”
“Of course there going to hurt.” He looked up to see Aiden looking down at him. Aiden was four foot six inches. “There wooden crates.” He had on a dark blue tank top and black shorts that stopped below the knee.
“I caught her. Told you she would come to my room.” Luka held onto the medium sized dog as he stood up, Aiden sighed and held his hands out. She had white, black, and brown patches all over her body.
“Come on let’s get her back to my house.” Luka placed the medium sized dog in his arms and they walked along one walkway till they reached some stairs that wound around the large tree. Walking down they reached the ground. “Luka how are you holding up, you and you’re mom were pretty close”
“I’m doing all right. I’m just not used to it yet.”
“It’s been almost a year since that day. Plus I think your father is allowed to see other people, I don’t think your mother will be mad.”
“They’re going to be getting married in four months.” He gave a frown, “I won’t forget her.”
Aiden sighed, “No one’s going to forget Aquaria.” Luka looked away and watched the ground. Sighing once again he kicked Luka in the back of his leg. “Cheer up; you’re putting a damper on my mood.”
“Fine, will Magic be up?”
“He should be up by now.” They grew quiet after that.
Luka walked next to Aiden as they passed through the market area. Glancing up at the largest tree in the whole village, known as the Main Tree, “One day I’m going to climb to the top of that tree.” Aiden laughed at him.
“Stick to swimming you’re not a monkey.” Luka stuck his tongue out at Aiden as they reached a three story house that sat near the main tree. Pushing the door open Aiden walked in with Luka following, “I’m home!”
A man stepped out and looked at Aiden; he had long blonde hair that was pulled back out of his face. His eyes were a dark sea green color and he stood at five feet and six inches. “Welcome home Aiden, I see you found Magic’s dog.”
“Yep.” A group of kids came running out of a room past Aiden and Luka. “Come on Luka let’s go drop off Magic’s dog and then we can head over to Randy’s.” Luka nodded and waved at the man.
“Hi, Ronan.”
“Hello Luka.”
Both boys walked up a pair of stairs and around a corner, pushing a door open they found a small boy sitting on a bed. His head turned but his eyes never focused on them. The small boy had short shaggy brown hair and pale gray eyes. His black hoodie hung on his frame and looked like it would swallow him whole. He had on shorts, with holes, that stopped above his knees. “Who is it?”
“Who else, I brought her home.” Aiden said.
“Oi, I helped to Magic.” Luka called out.
Magic giggled and patted the bed, “Can you put her here?”
“Okay, she’s still hurt though.” Walking over Aiden sat the dog down and patted her on the head. “How are you doing?”
“It’s boring.” Luka stood to the side looking around. He shifted from foot to foot and his hand kept flexing.
Aiden caught this, “Well I’ll play with you later, ‘kay?”
The small boy brightened, “Okay, before dinner right?”
“Yep.” He took a few steps back and grinned. “Take care of her, I’ll check on her later.”
“Okay, see you later.” Aiden glanced at Luka’s back as they walked out of the room. His shoulders were tense.
“Luka are you sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine… just tired.”
Aiden frowned, ‘Lie.’
Once they were outside Luka rubbed the back of his neck, “I’m not feeling well, you should go hang with Magic.”
“Where are you really going?”
“Home.”
“Lie.”
Luka quickly turned around, “Just leave me alone.” Aiden gave him a bored look and then sighed.
“Fine I’ll leave you alone.” He turned and walked off, he heard Luka take off running.
“That was a little harsh Aiden.” He tipped his head to the side and looked to see another child.
“Hey Ari.”
She walked up to him, her hair was pulled back. Ari was as tall as Luka, she had on a brown shirt with a jacket on over it and blue jean pants. “You do know he’s looking for someone who can understand what he’s going through.”
“Yep, but I can’t help him.”
She sighed and shook her head. “Fine. I was coming to tell you that some of the older teens might use this to their advantage.”
It all clicked together, “Stupid idiot.” He turned, “Get Luka’s dad.” Then he ran off after Luka.
Luka glanced up the side of the cliff and saw it. He heard the voice in his ear, “Go on you can do it.” Walking up to a face of the cliff, he grabbed one rock and pulled himself up. He was climbing up as the older teens cheered him on. Once he reached the top he grabbed the ball and pulled that’s when it happened.
“Luka it’s a trap get down from there.”
‘Huh?’ Luka saw Aiden running into the clearing.
“Shut up you brat.” One teen grabbed Aiden and held him as he struggled. “Luka get the ball down or I’ll hurt your friend here.”
Luka growled, no one threatens his friends. Aiden bit down on the arm making the teen scream in pain; dropping Aiden he pulled out a knife and slashed at him. Aiden fell back and clutched his cheek. “Aiden!” Luka pulled harder on the ball and something snapped.
The rock started to break apart and Luka found himself falling. He closed his eyes and waited for the ground. Nothing happened, so when he opened his eyes he saw his father. “Luka are you okay?”
Then the eleven year old started to cry as he hugged his father, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be mean.” He looked over to see the teens.
“If I find out any of you have caused any trouble from now on I’m have you cleaning everything in the Main Tree.” The group turned and ran away.
“Liam I came as soon as Ari told me, where’s Aiden?” Ronan was running up to them, then he saw Aiden holding his cheek and blood was running down. He was at Aiden’s side, “What the hell happened to you?”
“One of them had a knife. Is Luka ok?”
Liam stood up and with Luka standing next to him, “I’m sorry Aiden, you got hurt again because of me.” Aiden waved him off and stood up, Ronan was now trying to stop the bleeding. He had ripped his sleeve off and placed it on top of the cut.
“Aiden hold it. Your father will freak when you get home.”
“Nothing to worry about, Ronan I’m ok.” Ronan sighed and pulled Aiden into a hug.
Liam knelt down and looked at Luka, “Luka, I’m not trying to forget your mother, I will all ways lover her. I know if she was alive and here, you would be in so much trouble.” Ronan picked this time to usher Aiden back to the village to see the doctor.
Luka rubbed at his eyes and looked down, “But she’s not. I won’t call that lady mother, she is not my mother.”
“Fine you don’t have to, but you need to be nice to her. Can you do that for me?”
Luka stood there thinking about it, “Fine, but you can’t forget about mother.”
“I couldn’t do that even if I wanted to.”
“Why’s that?”
“You remind me of her, you and her are both trouble makers. She’s not really dead but alive,” Liam poked Luka in the chest, “right here.” He stood up and grabbed Luka’s hand, “Now come on, dinner will be ready and I want to teach you how to find and disarm traps.” Luka smiled and held onto his hand.
Aiden knocked on Luka’s door, “Come on I know you’re in there, open up.”
“I’m not coming out till your cut is healed.” Aiden sighed and jiggled the door knob. He pulled out a pick and started to pick the lock. There was a click and he opened the door.
“I’m come in Luka.”
Luka was standing on his bed, his pillow above his head. He saw Aiden’s cheek; it had a bandage on over it, “Oh I thought dad picked my lock again.” Luka flopped onto the bed.
“It took a few stitches but it’s not that bad.” Aiden walked over and started to poke Luka on the arm. “Let’s go outside.” Poke. “I’m bored.” Poke. “Ari is too busy training with her dad.” He kept poking.
“Fine I’ll come outside.” He jumped down and Aiden tossed his arm over Luka’s shoulder.
“Well let’s see how long it takes to piss off Ari.” With both boys grinning they walked out of the room.
“You’re on your own if she comes after you with her wooden sword.” Aiden sighed as Luka said this.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Luka felt the water ripple and he opened his eyes; Aiden was looking down at him. He swam to the surface and looked at him, “What?”
“Look I’m sorry I yelled at you.” He sat down, after pulling his shoes and socks off he let his feet hang in the water. Luka pulled himself up and smiled, “You better quit smiling or I’ll knock you in.”
Luka laughed, “You’re the greatest friend ever.”
“I better be, after all the shit we’ve been through.” Aiden said from where he sat. “I told Ari.”
“About time,” Luka chuckled when Aiden glared at him. “I’m happy now.”
“You better be, because when Dryden wakes up you’ll be getting hell.”
“What about the dragons?”
“Fed and asleep.”
“Good. Question, how long can you keep Zachariah busy?”
“How long do you need him busy for?” Luka smirked and looked at the water, “How’s the scratch?”
Luka looked down at his side and sighed, “Not even half way.” He leaned back and looked up at the sky through the hole in the ceiling. Aiden stood up and looked down at Luka.
“Well I’m going to tell Ari that your fine.”
“Okay.” When Aiden was gone he let himself slip back into the water.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A younger Luka ran through the market area, “Damn it Luka bring that back!” He was running from Aiden. He was only thirteen and damn it he didn’t was to sit and listen to people go on and on about the past. But Aiden liked to listen, so Luka had stolen his bag and ran for it. “Luka!”
He slid under a moving cart and kept running, now Luka was five foot five inches and still growing. Aiden on the other hand was only five feet. “Come on Aiden, you got to catch me.”
“Luka I’m going to kick your ass!” Just then Luka was knocked to the ground. He tumbled and flipped to his feet. When Luka looked up he saw Ari crouched, pivoting on his feet he ran.
“Come on you got to do better.”
Ari ran after him, Aiden was right behind her. “Come on Luka give it back.”
“NO!” Luka jumped up and grabbed the top of a box. Pulling himself up he jumped on top of a canopy awning.
“Damn it boy, get off of my roof!”
Luka climbed up onto the roof of the building and looked down to see Aiden and Ari climbing up after. The store owner was cussing them out. He took off across the roof of the building and then dropped down into street full of people. Some people stopped and looked at Luka. Then Luka remembered, “Shit.” Luka ducked his head and took off running, ever since he turned twelve the marks that appeared on his body made people look at him differently.
He didn’t like it when they looked at him like that. Just then someone grabbed him and yanked him to the side. “Ack. Hey let go, I did nothing wrong.”
The man stood taller than him, “Let’s see what you have first.”
“None of your business now let me go.”
Aiden skidded to a halt and put his arm out to catch Ari. Pointing to his left, he made a motion and she nodded. She would come from behind while he nailed the man with some rocks. ‘Bastards have been pissing me off, just because Luka is a half-breed doesn’t mean you can make him feel like shit.’ He pulled out a slingshot and picked a rock up, ‘At least we’re not on the busy part of the street.’ Ari came out of now where and slammed a wooden pole on to the man’s shoulder. He let go of Luka, jumping back from the man Luka stuck his tongue out.
The man ran at him and then he clutched his head, “What the fuck?” he looked around. Luka ran up and dropped kicked him. The man got up and ran off.
“Bastard.” He was about to run when Ari attacked with her wooden sword, he jumped back to miss her vertical cut. “What the hell, you trying to knock me out?”
Aiden tackled him to the ground and both started wrestling for the bag, “Give it back!”
“No!”
“I want to get smarter to help Magic!! At least I’m doing something with my family!” Luka stopped and shoved Aiden off of him.
“Fuck you. You’re not even related to Magic.” He walked off his hands in his pockets.
Aiden picked up his bag and dusted it off, “For a guy who’s supposedly smart you sure don’t think before you speak.”
He glared at her, “This wouldn’t have happened if he would have let me go to class.”
“Think Aiden, maybe Luka would like to have someone to talk to. His brother is only three years old.”
“Fine I’ll go tell him sorry.” He looked in the way Luka had gone, “Wait why did he go that way?”
“What do you mean, why? You’re his best friend you should know this.”
“Lately it’s hard to read him.”
Ari sighed and shook her head, then pointing she growled, “Go fix it!” he looked her, “Now!!!”
“Fine.”
Luka walked through one of the many hallways in the Main Tree, his head down. Not paying attention to where he was going, he ran into something. Two hands grabbed his shoulders and steadied him, “Luka what’s wrong?” he looked up to see his father.
“Nothing is wrong. I’m going to my room.” He stepped around Liam and walked off. Liam scratched the top of his head.
“What is wrong with him?”
The boy stopped when he heard a noise, he took a few steps backwards and looked into a room. Syrita was sitting with his half brothers, Rusty and Tam. Syrita had long dark wavy brown hair and forest green eyes. She was a small woman standing at five foot three inches and had a petite build. She was dressed in a long blue and white shirt with a long white long sleeve shirt on under, with a tan skirt that stopped at her ankles.
Rusty was a small three year old that was full of energy. He had short messy reddish brown hair and had green eyes that were always full of laughter. The small boy had on a shirt that was too big for him and a pair of shorts. Luka watched as the small boy jumped up and down, cheering as Tam tried to walk. Luka walked up and leaned against the door frame. Tam had the same hair color and eye color as Syrita.
Syrita caught movement out of the corner of her eye, looking up to find no one standing there. She sighed and stood up, “Mama?”
She placed her finger to her lips and slowly crept to the door. Jumping out she found nobody standing there, “Hmm……I thought I saw Luka.” Syrita turned and walked back into the room. ‘I’ll tell him later.’
Luka sat with his back against the small side table just a few feet away from the closed door, ‘Idiot, stop being scared.’ He stood up and ran to his room, once there he closed the door and locked it. He moved over to the bathroom and walked in, turning on the sink he watched as the water poured out. Luka filled his hands and splashed his face with the water. He glanced up and jumped back, “What the crap!” grabbed a towel and rubbed at his face. When he pulled it away, it didn’t disappear. ‘Father might know.’
Running out of the bathroom, he opened his door and ran right into Aiden. They both fell to the ground, Luka pushed himself away and was about to run when Aiden grabbed his arm. “What is wrong with you?”
Luka kept his head down, “I don’t know. Let go.” Aiden saw his Luka’s hands and he grabbed one.
“What is on your hands?” Luka yanked it away and took off running, “Luka!”
Luka ran around a corner and saw Liam. He put his hands in his pockets and with his head down, he walked up to him. Liam turned and saw Luka, “Luka, there you are I’ve been…… what’s wrong?”
“Can we talk? A place where no one will walk in.”
Liam sighed and knelt down, he saw Luka’s face. “Okay, come on.”
Aiden looked around the corner and when they walked on further, he followed after them. Liam opened a door and Luka walked in. Aiden stopped when Liam saw him, then he walked in and closed the door. The teen walked up and placed his ear against the door.
Luka sat down on the chair and looked at his hands, “What’s going on?”
“It’s one of the things your mother could do.” He looked at Luka and smiled, “it’s nothing bad, your skin will only change when water gets on it.”
“Will it go back?”
Liam pick something up and held it out to him, “You tell me.” Luka took the mirror and looked in it. His skin went back to normal and he looked up. “You should try going under water. Have you been to the lake yet?”
“No, not since Aiden started classes.”
“Let’s just say you won’t need air when you go under.”
“Really?” He stood up, “I’m going to find Aiden.” He opened the door and found Aiden standing there.
“Hi.”
Luka grabbed Aiden's hand, “Come on let’s go to the Lake.” Aiden waved to Liam as Luka dragged him off.
^^^^^^
Aiden and Luka sat there glaring at each other. One was sixteen now and the other seventeen. Aiden’s arm was in a sling, with a cast around his lower arm. “It’s your entire fault. We wouldn’t be stuck out here in this damn shack.”
Luka turned around and showed his back. Aiden picked up a rock and chucked it at his head. The younger teen clutched his head and growled, turning around he saw Aiden smirking at him. “You’re an ass hole.”
“You were the one who climbed the tree and then we get sent to Razz’s out in the middle of nowhere. To top it all off, Razz has us here, because you had to start that damn fight.” There was movement outside and both of them looked at the door. It opened and Razz walked in.
“I see your still fighting, what the hell got you two so pissed at each other?” He sat a box down, “You’ll be living out here, till you two get along or till Aiden heals. Whatever comes first?” Razz walked to the door and looked back, “About a month, if you wait for Aiden to heal. Well have fun.” He walked out of the shack.
Luka looked out the door and stood up. Grabbing his cane he walked out of the shack into the sun. ‘This will be a long month.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ari stood on the edge of the spring, she could see Luka laying at the bottom. Picking up a stone she dropped it into the water, Luka sat up and looked at her. He pushed up from the bottom of the water and swam up. His head broke the surface of the water and he took a deep breath of air. “Hello Luka.”
“Ari, what’s going on?”
“Food?” she held up a bowl and a canteen.
He sniffed the air and grinned, “Oh, something good to eat, about time.” He pulled himself out of the water and took the bowl from Ari. He sat down in front of her and looked at it, taking a bite he had a look of happiness. “Tell Aiden he needs to show me his secret in making good food.”
“Luka you burn water.”
He waved his fork at her, “If someone would teach me…”
Ari sighed, “All you have to do is ask.”
“I did he said no.”
“Maybe Dryden can cook?” Luka thought about it and smiled. She turned and then looked back, “Luka, you and Aiden, you’re not fighting again like last time?”
Luka shook his head and smiled, “I don’t think something like that will ever happen again.”
“What made you and Aiden make up?”
“I don’t remember.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aiden cursed and dropped the spoon, “Fuck I burnt myself again.” Luka didn’t even flinch as Aiden cursed. He glanced at Luka he was sprawled out on the ground; the younger teen wouldn’t even talk to him. Reaching for Luka’s canteen, he shook it. “Luka you didn’t even drink any of your water.” Luka didn’t even move, “Luka.” He stood up and walked over; he nudged him with his foot. Now he was worried, “Luka!” Aiden dropped on to his knees and shook Luka, “Wake up!”
The younger teen reached his arm up and grabbed Aiden’s shirt and then he said softly, “I don’t feel so good.”
Aiden nodded and opened the canteen; he lifted Luka up with his good arm. “Lean against me, I can’t hold you up.” He placed the canteen to his mouth and lifted it up. “Come on let’s get some water in you. You need to keep it close to you at all times.” Luka drank the water too fast and choked on it. Aiden pulled it back and leaned Luka forward. “Damn it Luka don’t kill yourself.”
“Sorry…”
“What are you apologizing for?"
“For taking my anger out on you,” Luka laughed and looked at him, “for blaming you.”
Aiden was just getting confused as Luka talked, “What the hell are you getting at?”
“Magic.”
“Is that why you’ve been pissed off lately?”
“Yes.” Aiden sighed and shook his head.
“Magic will be all right, didn’t anyone tell you?” Luka turned around and looked at him.
“Tell me what?”
“They found him, but……” Aiden lowered his head, “He doesn’t remember anything.” Luka looked away and covered his face, “Here, drink, you’re going to need it.”
Luka felt the canteen fall in his lap and Aiden walked back over to the food, “Aiden,” he looked back at Luka, “What about you?”
“What do you mean?”
Luka was looking at him, “Magic isn’t related to you. He loved you more than anyone.”
“I know he’s not related to me.” Aiden smiled and then sat down, “He told me every day, he may act childish but he’s far from a child.”
Luka rose an eyebrow at this, “Come again…”
Aiden gave him a look, “He’s not that much older than us.”
Luka was in front of him, “Say what?”
“He’ll be nineteen next week.”
Luka gapped, he looked at Aiden, “Did you like him?”
Aiden shook his head and laughed. “No I couldn’t like him like that.” Luka glanced away and sighed, “Holy shit you like him.”
Luka blinked, “No…” he stopped when Aiden gave him a look, “Fine I did, but he doesn’t remember me now.”
“So that’s why you were so pissed.”
Luke fell back on his ass and looked up at the ceiling, “It hurts because he only saw you,” he thought about his words, “even though he was blind.” Luka ran his hand over his now bruised leg, “That’s why I climbed the tree, I was so pissed I had to do something. I couldn’t stop him.”
“You couldn’t stop him, what do you mean you couldn’t stop him?”
Luka smiled and stood up, “Wouldn’t you like to know.” He walked towards the door, “I’m getting more water.” Aiden watched as he walked out of the shack. He would have kicked his ass if his arm wasn’t in a sling; all he wanted to know is why Luka couldn’t stop him.
When Luka came back into the shack, Aiden handed him a bowl and walked over to his, “Are you going to tell me?”
“One day I will, but not now.” Luka looked at the bowel and grinned, “I’m sorry I pulled another crazy stunt, but sometimes when I pull a crazy stunt I feel like I can do anything.” The younger teen sat down and started to eat.
“So you’re not going to pick fights with me anymore.” He would have like that; maybe he should tell him why he didn’t like Magic.
“Unless you deserve it.” Luka finished off the bowel and placed it down, “Night.” He pulled the canteen closer and flopped on to his bed roll, he was a sleep before Aiden finished his food.
After eating his food he grabbed Luka’s bowl and with his he went to rinse then off. Walking back into the shack he placed the bowls down and went to lay down on his bedroll. Aiden rolled over and looked at the sleeping Luka; when he crawled over he ran a hand through his hair, “You’re an idiot.” He leaned over and kissed him. When he pulled back Luka was looking at him, a smirk on his face.
“I’m an idiot.”
“Yes you are.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luka placed his bowl down and looked over at the spring. He took a quick glance down at his side and gave a sigh. ‘Damn it not healed yet. Standing up Luka walked to the edge and jumped in, ‘Better hope Dryden doesn’t wake up soon He let himself sink to the ground and swam around.
^^^^^^^
Aiden walked up to Ari and sat next to her, “How’s the desert?”
“Dead like always.” Aiden smiled and looked at her; he grabbed her hand and held it, “So why didn’t you tell me that you two got together?”
He smiled, “It only lasted a half a year.” He looked up at the sky, the sun was slowly setting. “So your mom isn’t going to serve me up on a platter.” Ari laughed, “I’m serious, she’s not exactly happy about some of my choices.”
“I don’t care.” Aiden gave a soft smile.
“Well I do have two fathers and brothers and sisters I’m not even related too. Just as long as you’re ok with being surrounded by people during the family get together.”
“I don’t mind. I guess I won’t get to see your real mother.” Aiden was found abandoned in the forest at a young age; he had no memory of who he was. There was only a note and a name.
“I don’t need one.” He tipped his head to the side and she could hear his neck crack. “Damn that hurt.”
“Hey you two, Dryden he’s waking up!” Ari stood up and ran over, Aiden was following after her. Zachariah was leaning over Dryden, “Hey Dryden, come on wake up.” He reached for a bowl of food, “Someone, hold him up.” Aiden helped Dryden sit up.
“Where are we?” He glanced around and then he jerked forward, “Where’s……Luka?” He fell back and Ari caught him before his head hit the ground.
“Take it easy, you need to eat.” Dryden looked at her, “He’s alright. He just went for a swim.” He nodded and she pushed him upright into a sitting position.
Zachariah placed the bowl of food in his hand, “If it too cold, tell me.”
He nodded and looked down, “What happened?”
“Eat.” Zachariah said as he stood up. Ari smiled at him as Aiden walked over to a small fire. What had happened, was Luka alright, why the hell did he feel so weak and tired?
Dryden looked around the cave; he saw the sand rail and the four small dragons, but no sign of Luka. “Are you sure Luka is alright?”
“Yep, when I saw him he was doing ok.” Dryden nodded once again and started to eat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A child walked down the hall. He was dragging a bag behind him. A younger looking Liam walked out of a room to find the child. The child was four feet and nine inches, he had on a black sleeveless shirt and a pair of pants, “Luka what are you doing with that bag?”
The boy looked up, “Nothing.” He tried to move faster only to trip over his feet. “Stupid bag.” Luka watched as Liam bent down and picked it up. He pulled on the zipper, “No don’t open it.” A dog jumped out at Liam and ran off. Liam looked over at Luka only to see him running after the dog.
“Luka Calder Zander, you get back here right now!”
Luka stopped and turned around, “Not right now, she’s hurt.” The boy ran after the dog, he ran down the hallways and skidded around corners. The dog ran outside onto a hanging bridge, once outside Luka glanced around, trees were everywhere, with walkways that stretched from tree to tree. He saw the dog running across another walkway. Rushing passed people, who yelled at him to watch out, he finally was able to catch up with the dog.
Luka dove and grabbed the dog, tucked and rolled hitting some crates. “Owie that hurt.”
“Of course there going to hurt.” He looked up to see Aiden looking down at him. Aiden was four foot six inches. “There wooden crates.” He had on a dark blue tank top and black shorts that stopped below the knee.
“I caught her. Told you she would come to my room.” Luka held onto the medium sized dog as he stood up, Aiden sighed and held his hands out. She had white, black, and brown patches all over her body.
“Come on let’s get her back to my house.” Luka placed the medium sized dog in his arms and they walked along one walkway till they reached some stairs that wound around the large tree. Walking down they reached the ground. “Luka how are you holding up, you and you’re mom were pretty close”
“I’m doing all right. I’m just not used to it yet.”
“It’s been almost a year since that day. Plus I think your father is allowed to see other people, I don’t think your mother will be mad.”
“They’re going to be getting married in four months.” He gave a frown, “I won’t forget her.”
Aiden sighed, “No one’s going to forget Aquaria.” Luka looked away and watched the ground. Sighing once again he kicked Luka in the back of his leg. “Cheer up; you’re putting a damper on my mood.”
“Fine, will Magic be up?”
“He should be up by now.” They grew quiet after that.
Luka walked next to Aiden as they passed through the market area. Glancing up at the largest tree in the whole village, known as the Main Tree, “One day I’m going to climb to the top of that tree.” Aiden laughed at him.
“Stick to swimming you’re not a monkey.” Luka stuck his tongue out at Aiden as they reached a three story house that sat near the main tree. Pushing the door open Aiden walked in with Luka following, “I’m home!”
A man stepped out and looked at Aiden; he had long blonde hair that was pulled back out of his face. His eyes were a dark sea green color and he stood at five feet and six inches. “Welcome home Aiden, I see you found Magic’s dog.”
“Yep.” A group of kids came running out of a room past Aiden and Luka. “Come on Luka let’s go drop off Magic’s dog and then we can head over to Randy’s.” Luka nodded and waved at the man.
“Hi, Ronan.”
“Hello Luka.”
Both boys walked up a pair of stairs and around a corner, pushing a door open they found a small boy sitting on a bed. His head turned but his eyes never focused on them. The small boy had short shaggy brown hair and pale gray eyes. His black hoodie hung on his frame and looked like it would swallow him whole. He had on shorts, with holes, that stopped above his knees. “Who is it?”
“Who else, I brought her home.” Aiden said.
“Oi, I helped to Magic.” Luka called out.
Magic giggled and patted the bed, “Can you put her here?”
“Okay, she’s still hurt though.” Walking over Aiden sat the dog down and patted her on the head. “How are you doing?”
“It’s boring.” Luka stood to the side looking around. He shifted from foot to foot and his hand kept flexing.
Aiden caught this, “Well I’ll play with you later, ‘kay?”
The small boy brightened, “Okay, before dinner right?”
“Yep.” He took a few steps back and grinned. “Take care of her, I’ll check on her later.”
“Okay, see you later.” Aiden glanced at Luka’s back as they walked out of the room. His shoulders were tense.
“Luka are you sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine… just tired.”
Aiden frowned, ‘Lie.’
Once they were outside Luka rubbed the back of his neck, “I’m not feeling well, you should go hang with Magic.”
“Where are you really going?”
“Home.”
“Lie.”
Luka quickly turned around, “Just leave me alone.” Aiden gave him a bored look and then sighed.
“Fine I’ll leave you alone.” He turned and walked off, he heard Luka take off running.
“That was a little harsh Aiden.” He tipped his head to the side and looked to see another child.
“Hey Ari.”
She walked up to him, her hair was pulled back. Ari was as tall as Luka, she had on a brown shirt with a jacket on over it and blue jean pants. “You do know he’s looking for someone who can understand what he’s going through.”
“Yep, but I can’t help him.”
She sighed and shook her head. “Fine. I was coming to tell you that some of the older teens might use this to their advantage.”
It all clicked together, “Stupid idiot.” He turned, “Get Luka’s dad.” Then he ran off after Luka.
Luka glanced up the side of the cliff and saw it. He heard the voice in his ear, “Go on you can do it.” Walking up to a face of the cliff, he grabbed one rock and pulled himself up. He was climbing up as the older teens cheered him on. Once he reached the top he grabbed the ball and pulled that’s when it happened.
“Luka it’s a trap get down from there.”
‘Huh?’ Luka saw Aiden running into the clearing.
“Shut up you brat.” One teen grabbed Aiden and held him as he struggled. “Luka get the ball down or I’ll hurt your friend here.”
Luka growled, no one threatens his friends. Aiden bit down on the arm making the teen scream in pain; dropping Aiden he pulled out a knife and slashed at him. Aiden fell back and clutched his cheek. “Aiden!” Luka pulled harder on the ball and something snapped.
The rock started to break apart and Luka found himself falling. He closed his eyes and waited for the ground. Nothing happened, so when he opened his eyes he saw his father. “Luka are you okay?”
Then the eleven year old started to cry as he hugged his father, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be mean.” He looked over to see the teens.
“If I find out any of you have caused any trouble from now on I’m have you cleaning everything in the Main Tree.” The group turned and ran away.
“Liam I came as soon as Ari told me, where’s Aiden?” Ronan was running up to them, then he saw Aiden holding his cheek and blood was running down. He was at Aiden’s side, “What the hell happened to you?”
“One of them had a knife. Is Luka ok?”
Liam stood up and with Luka standing next to him, “I’m sorry Aiden, you got hurt again because of me.” Aiden waved him off and stood up, Ronan was now trying to stop the bleeding. He had ripped his sleeve off and placed it on top of the cut.
“Aiden hold it. Your father will freak when you get home.”
“Nothing to worry about, Ronan I’m ok.” Ronan sighed and pulled Aiden into a hug.
Liam knelt down and looked at Luka, “Luka, I’m not trying to forget your mother, I will all ways lover her. I know if she was alive and here, you would be in so much trouble.” Ronan picked this time to usher Aiden back to the village to see the doctor.
Luka rubbed at his eyes and looked down, “But she’s not. I won’t call that lady mother, she is not my mother.”
“Fine you don’t have to, but you need to be nice to her. Can you do that for me?”
Luka stood there thinking about it, “Fine, but you can’t forget about mother.”
“I couldn’t do that even if I wanted to.”
“Why’s that?”
“You remind me of her, you and her are both trouble makers. She’s not really dead but alive,” Liam poked Luka in the chest, “right here.” He stood up and grabbed Luka’s hand, “Now come on, dinner will be ready and I want to teach you how to find and disarm traps.” Luka smiled and held onto his hand.
Aiden knocked on Luka’s door, “Come on I know you’re in there, open up.”
“I’m not coming out till your cut is healed.” Aiden sighed and jiggled the door knob. He pulled out a pick and started to pick the lock. There was a click and he opened the door.
“I’m come in Luka.”
Luka was standing on his bed, his pillow above his head. He saw Aiden’s cheek; it had a bandage on over it, “Oh I thought dad picked my lock again.” Luka flopped onto the bed.
“It took a few stitches but it’s not that bad.” Aiden walked over and started to poke Luka on the arm. “Let’s go outside.” Poke. “I’m bored.” Poke. “Ari is too busy training with her dad.” He kept poking.
“Fine I’ll come outside.” He jumped down and Aiden tossed his arm over Luka’s shoulder.
“Well let’s see how long it takes to piss off Ari.” With both boys grinning they walked out of the room.
“You’re on your own if she comes after you with her wooden sword.” Aiden sighed as Luka said this.
~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A younger Luka ran through the market area, “Damn it Luka bring that back!” He was running from Aiden. He was only thirteen and damn it he didn’t was to sit and listen to people go on and on about the past. But Aiden liked to listen, so Luka had stolen his bag and ran for it. “Luka!”
He slid under a moving cart and kept running, now Luka was five foot five inches and still growing. Aiden on the other hand was only five feet. “Come on Aiden, you got to catch me.”
“Luka I’m going to kick your ass!” Just then Luka was knocked to the ground. He tumbled and flipped to his feet. When Luka looked up he saw Ari crouched, pivoting on his feet he ran.
“Come on you got to do better.”
Ari ran after him, Aiden was right behind her. “Come on Luka give it back.”
“NO!” Luka jumped up and grabbed the top of a box. Pulling himself up he jumped on top of a canopy awning.
“Damn it boy, get off of my roof!”
Luka climbed up onto the roof of the building and looked down to see Aiden and Ari climbing up after. The store owner was cussing them out. He took off across the roof of the building and then dropped down into street full of people. Some people stopped and looked at Luka. Then Luka remembered, “Shit.” Luka ducked his head and took off running, ever since he turned twelve the marks that appeared on his body made people look at him differently.
He didn’t like it when they looked at him like that. Just then someone grabbed him and yanked him to the side. “Ack. Hey let go, I did nothing wrong.”
The man stood taller than him, “Let’s see what you have first.”
“None of your business now let me go.”
Aiden skidded to a halt and put his arm out to catch Ari. Pointing to his left, he made a motion and she nodded. She would come from behind while he nailed the man with some rocks. ‘Bastards have been pissing me off, just because Luka is a half-breed doesn’t mean you can make him feel like shit.’ He pulled out a slingshot and picked a rock up, ‘At least we’re not on the busy part of the street.’ Ari came out of now where and slammed a wooden pole on to the man’s shoulder. He let go of Luka, jumping back from the man Luka stuck his tongue out.
The man ran at him and then he clutched his head, “What the fuck?” he looked around. Luka ran up and dropped kicked him. The man got up and ran off.
“Bastard.” He was about to run when Ari attacked with her wooden sword, he jumped back to miss her vertical cut. “What the hell, you trying to knock me out?”
Aiden tackled him to the ground and both started wrestling for the bag, “Give it back!”
“No!”
“I want to get smarter to help Magic!! At least I’m doing something with my family!” Luka stopped and shoved Aiden off of him.
“Fuck you. You’re not even related to Magic.” He walked off his hands in his pockets.
Aiden picked up his bag and dusted it off, “For a guy who’s supposedly smart you sure don’t think before you speak.”
He glared at her, “This wouldn’t have happened if he would have let me go to class.”
“Think Aiden, maybe Luka would like to have someone to talk to. His brother is only three years old.”
“Fine I’ll go tell him sorry.” He looked in the way Luka had gone, “Wait why did he go that way?”
“What do you mean, why? You’re his best friend you should know this.”
“Lately it’s hard to read him.”
Ari sighed and shook her head, then pointing she growled, “Go fix it!” he looked her, “Now!!!”
“Fine.”
Luka walked through one of the many hallways in the Main Tree, his head down. Not paying attention to where he was going, he ran into something. Two hands grabbed his shoulders and steadied him, “Luka what’s wrong?” he looked up to see his father.
“Nothing is wrong. I’m going to my room.” He stepped around Liam and walked off. Liam scratched the top of his head.
“What is wrong with him?”
The boy stopped when he heard a noise, he took a few steps backwards and looked into a room. Syrita was sitting with his half brothers, Rusty and Tam. Syrita had long dark wavy brown hair and forest green eyes. She was a small woman standing at five foot three inches and had a petite build. She was dressed in a long blue and white shirt with a long white long sleeve shirt on under, with a tan skirt that stopped at her ankles.
Rusty was a small three year old that was full of energy. He had short messy reddish brown hair and had green eyes that were always full of laughter. The small boy had on a shirt that was too big for him and a pair of shorts. Luka watched as the small boy jumped up and down, cheering as Tam tried to walk. Luka walked up and leaned against the door frame. Tam had the same hair color and eye color as Syrita.
Syrita caught movement out of the corner of her eye, looking up to find no one standing there. She sighed and stood up, “Mama?”
She placed her finger to her lips and slowly crept to the door. Jumping out she found nobody standing there, “Hmm……I thought I saw Luka.” Syrita turned and walked back into the room. ‘I’ll tell him later.’
Luka sat with his back against the small side table just a few feet away from the closed door, ‘Idiot, stop being scared.’ He stood up and ran to his room, once there he closed the door and locked it. He moved over to the bathroom and walked in, turning on the sink he watched as the water poured out. Luka filled his hands and splashed his face with the water. He glanced up and jumped back, “What the crap!” grabbed a towel and rubbed at his face. When he pulled it away, it didn’t disappear. ‘Father might know.’
Running out of the bathroom, he opened his door and ran right into Aiden. They both fell to the ground, Luka pushed himself away and was about to run when Aiden grabbed his arm. “What is wrong with you?”
Luka kept his head down, “I don’t know. Let go.” Aiden saw his Luka’s hands and he grabbed one.
“What is on your hands?” Luka yanked it away and took off running, “Luka!”
Luka ran around a corner and saw Liam. He put his hands in his pockets and with his head down, he walked up to him. Liam turned and saw Luka, “Luka, there you are I’ve been…… what’s wrong?”
“Can we talk? A place where no one will walk in.”
Liam sighed and knelt down, he saw Luka’s face. “Okay, come on.”
Aiden looked around the corner and when they walked on further, he followed after them. Liam opened a door and Luka walked in. Aiden stopped when Liam saw him, then he walked in and closed the door. The teen walked up and placed his ear against the door.
Luka sat down on the chair and looked at his hands, “What’s going on?”
“It’s one of the things your mother could do.” He looked at Luka and smiled, “it’s nothing bad, your skin will only change when water gets on it.”
“Will it go back?”
Liam pick something up and held it out to him, “You tell me.” Luka took the mirror and looked in it. His skin went back to normal and he looked up. “You should try going under water. Have you been to the lake yet?”
“No, not since Aiden started classes.”
“Let’s just say you won’t need air when you go under.”
“Really?” He stood up, “I’m going to find Aiden.” He opened the door and found Aiden standing there.
“Hi.”
Luka grabbed Aiden's hand, “Come on let’s go to the Lake.” Aiden waved to Liam as Luka dragged him off.
^^^^^^
Aiden and Luka sat there glaring at each other. One was sixteen now and the other seventeen. Aiden’s arm was in a sling, with a cast around his lower arm. “It’s your entire fault. We wouldn’t be stuck out here in this damn shack.”
Luka turned around and showed his back. Aiden picked up a rock and chucked it at his head. The younger teen clutched his head and growled, turning around he saw Aiden smirking at him. “You’re an ass hole.”
“You were the one who climbed the tree and then we get sent to Razz’s out in the middle of nowhere. To top it all off, Razz has us here, because you had to start that damn fight.” There was movement outside and both of them looked at the door. It opened and Razz walked in.
“I see your still fighting, what the hell got you two so pissed at each other?” He sat a box down, “You’ll be living out here, till you two get along or till Aiden heals. Whatever comes first?” Razz walked to the door and looked back, “About a month, if you wait for Aiden to heal. Well have fun.” He walked out of the shack.
Luka looked out the door and stood up. Grabbing his cane he walked out of the shack into the sun. ‘This will be a long month.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aiden cursed and dropped the spoon, “Fuck I burnt myself again.” Luka didn’t even flinch as Aiden cursed. He glanced at Luka he was sprawled out on the ground; the younger teen wouldn’t even talk to him. Reaching for Luka’s canteen, he shook it. “Luka you didn’t even drink any of your water.” Luka didn’t even move, “Luka.” He stood up and walked over; he nudged him with his foot. Now he was worried, “Luka!” Aiden dropped on to his knees and shook Luka, “Wake up!”
The younger teen reached his arm up and grabbed Aiden’s shirt and then he said softly, “I don’t feel so good.”
Aiden nodded and opened the canteen; he lifted Luka up with his good arm. “Lean against me, I can’t hold you up.” He placed the canteen to his mouth and lifted it up. “Come on let’s get some water in you. You need to keep it close to you at all times.” Luka drank the water too fast and choked on it. Aiden pulled it back and leaned Luka forward. “Damn it Luka don’t kill yourself.”
“Sorry…”
“What are you apologizing for?"
“For taking my anger out on you,” Luka laughed and looked at him, “for blaming you.”
Aiden was just getting confused as Luka talked, “What the hell are you getting at?”
“Magic.”
“Is that why you’ve been pissed off lately?”
“Yes.” Aiden sighed and shook his head.
“Magic will be all right, didn’t anyone tell you?” Luka turned around and looked at him.
“Tell me what?”
“They found him, but……” Aiden lowered his head, “He doesn’t remember anything.” Luka looked away and covered his face, “Here, drink, you’re going to need it.”
Luka felt the canteen fall in his lap and Aiden walked back over to the food, “Aiden,” he looked back at Luka, “What about you?”
“What do you mean?”
Luka was looking at him, “Magic isn’t related to you. He loved you more than anyone.”
“I know he’s not related to me.” Aiden smiled and then sat down, “He told me every day, he may act childish but he’s far from a child.”
Luka rose an eyebrow at this, “Come again…”
Aiden gave him a look, “He’s not that much older than us.”
Luka was in front of him, “Say what?”
“He’ll be nineteen next week.”
Luka gapped, he looked at Aiden, “Did you like him?”
Aiden shook his head and laughed. “No I couldn’t like him like that.” Luka glanced away and sighed, “Holy shit you like him.”
Luka blinked, “No…” he stopped when Aiden gave him a look, “Fine I did, but he doesn’t remember me now.”
“So that’s why you were so pissed.”
Luke fell back on his ass and looked up at the ceiling, “It hurts because he only saw you,” he thought about his words, “even though he was blind.” Luka ran his hand over his now bruised leg, “That’s why I climbed the tree, I was so pissed I had to do something. I couldn’t stop him.”
“You couldn’t stop him, what do you mean you couldn’t stop him?”
Luka smiled and stood up, “Wouldn’t you like to know.” He walked towards the door, “I’m getting more water.” Aiden watched as he walked out of the shack. He would have kicked his ass if his arm wasn’t in a sling; all he wanted to know is why Luka couldn’t stop him.
When Luka came back into the shack, Aiden handed him a bowl and walked over to his, “Are you going to tell me?”
“One day I will, but not now.” Luka looked at the bowel and grinned, “I’m sorry I pulled another crazy stunt, but sometimes when I pull a crazy stunt I feel like I can do anything.” The younger teen sat down and started to eat.
“So you’re not going to pick fights with me anymore.” He would have like that; maybe he should tell him why he didn’t like Magic.
“Unless you deserve it.” Luka finished off the bowel and placed it down, “Night.” He pulled the canteen closer and flopped on to his bed roll, he was a sleep before Aiden finished his food.
After eating his food he grabbed Luka’s bowl and with his he went to rinse then off. Walking back into the shack he placed the bowls down and went to lay down on his bedroll. Aiden rolled over and looked at the sleeping Luka; when he crawled over he ran a hand through his hair, “You’re an idiot.” He leaned over and kissed him. When he pulled back Luka was looking at him, a smirk on his face.
“I’m an idiot.”
“Yes you are.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
