Chapter 7 - Hannah
Author’s Note: Thank you to everyone who reviewed my two most recent chapters. I squeezed this one out as fast as I can. Let me know what you think!
Chapter 7 – Hannah
When Luke returned to the house he found that Hannah was just waking. He watched her rub her eyes and look around hesitantly. She spied the meal he had left for her and in no time was munching happily. He left to see her almost immediately. He wanted to be there before she discovered that she was in a locked room and panic set in.
He found her just as he had last seen her, sitting with one leg propped up on the seat of the chair, one leg dangling below, kicking the chair leg in time to her chewing. Hannah had been starring at the coloring book and supplies he had left her before spinning around to watch the door opening.
“Where’s my Mommy?” was all she asked when he walked in.
“She’s in the other room resting. She fainted last night, remember?” Luke waited for her to nod and then continued, “Well, you fell asleep before we got to the hospital but they said that she’d be alright if we just let her get lots of rest.”
Hannah nodded again, totally accepting. “So where are we? Is this your house?” The sound was slightly muffled by the food in her mouth and she took another bite of the sandwich before she had completely finished swallowing the current mouthful.
“Yes, this is my house. It was closer to the hospital so I thought it might be better to bring you both here for a while,” he paused and then spoke the lie he had so carefully prepared. “I spoke to your dad earlier and let him know what was going on. He said that he’s going to be going on another business trip and won’t be back for a couple of weeks, so he said to stay here as long as you two like.”
Hannah nodded a third time, digesting this new development. “So what have you got to do around here?” she asked once she had finished the sandwich.
“Well,” Luke said, pulling out a chair and dropping into it, “that depends. I’ve never been in charge of taking care of a little girl before—.”
“Hey! I’m not little! You take that back!” she said smiling at him with mock outrage in her voice. “I’ll have you know that I’m the biggest one on my block!”
“Okay, okay, not little, then. But still a girl, no?” He arched an eyebrow at her. “Anyway, I doubt that you’ll be content with coloring all day so I have a proposition for you. How would you like to go shopping with me?”
At that last, Hannah hesitated. Suspicion was in her voice when she said, “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Mr…? What’s your name again?”
“Call me Luke. And I completely understand what you mean. I just thought that if you were going to be here for a week or so you might want to get some clothes you like and some games or toys for you to play with while you’re here. You really have no cause to trust me, I mean I asked your mom and she said it was alright but I do understand if you would feel more comfortable waiting for her to wake up so she can tell you herself.” He was meandering, but that was all part of the plan. Make her feel guilty and then gain her trust.
“Well,” she drawled, thinking on the spot. “Well, if my mom said it would be alright then I guess it would be okay for me to go with you, right? I really don’t want to hang out here all by myself. Do you like to play games?”
“Love ‘em,” he said, starting to get up. “So… shall we go?”
Hannah looked at herself and frowned. “Well, these are the clothes I wore yesterday but I don’t think I have anything else to wear. What’s in the closets, anyway?”
“Ah-ha! Well, they are clothes for you. I had to guess at sizes so I got a range of them. Go take a look and let me know if you find anything that you like in there. I’ll go wait outside the door, just come out when you’re ready to go, okay?”
“Okay!”

Luke and Hannah returned to the house laden with a dozen or more bags from various stores in the area. Clothing and games, stuffed animals and new bedding, groceries and craft supplies filled them like overstuffed stockings and they had to make several trips from the car to the house and back again for more. After he had indicated to her that there really was not going to be a spending limit Hannah had taken the opportunity to get almost everything she had ever desired, showing only moderate restraint when it came to pricier electronic or multimedia items, and seemed to purchase almost everything in sight. He dared not say no to her, and he would not have regardless.
He still couldn’t believe how much stuff the little girl had found, and towards the end she had insisted on going to a few extra stores that weren’t even in the area. He thanked his good fortune that 411 had been invented since there would have been no other way to find these places. He was exhausted but he knew that he had a long evening ahead of him. He went into the kitchen and grabbed a large trash bag that the various boxes and wrappings could go in, then he bundled Hannah and all of her items up into her room and left her there to unpack and marvel at her new items. It was 6 o’clock; he had to go check on Marni.
Before he did anything he went into the main house to check on the past 6 hours of video footage, using the fast forward function to check it all in mere minutes. It looked like Marni had eventually eaten the meal he had made her and then had paced for the rest of the afternoon. Well, if she was going to be stubborn she would just have to learn the hard way. Whether Marni came to him kicking and screaming or she came to him willingly, he would have her.
Luke put some corn chowder that he had been slow-cooking all afternoon into a bowl with a cover and put it on the tray he had brought up to her with breakfast. The one she had been planning to hit him over the head with, he reminded himself. He finished off the meal with some warm, buttered bread and fresh strawberries. These were all her favorite things.

This time when he entered her room, Marni was fast asleep. At least she had taken his advice, though he doubted that she had really meant to fall asleep. Luke quietly set the tray down on the floor and crept over to her, watching her chest rise and fall, the small wisps of her hair floating with her breath. She had the most gorgeous hair he had ever seen.
Carefully and ever so gently he reached out a hand to smooth her hair back from her face. It was slightly damp as if she had perspired in her sleep. He hardly breathed for fear that she would wake up. She was just so peaceful, so beautiful laying there. When she didn’t wake he got bolder and stroked a silken cheek. She smiled in her sleep and turned onto her back, nestling herself closer into her pillow. His hand stroked down over the crevice in her neck and he stood over her to continue down over her stomach to touch her open hand.
Marni made a little purring sound and suddenly her eyes were open, her hand grasping his wrist in a firm grip. “So asshole,” she said in a voice still a little husky from her sleep, “did you leave the door unlocked this time? Her knee came up, hitting him squarely in the crotch, and then everything went dark.
