Chapter 7
Vin looked at himself in the mirror as Ian finished brushing him off.
“If I can say, Mr. Diesel, you look sharp as ever,” Ian complemented, trying to make up for yesterday’s blunder.
Vin met Ian’s eyes in the mirror, giving a short nod. He turned and walked back to the bed. Orlando lay amongst the fur, his dark skin standing out like a beacon in the night sky.
He stared down at the beauty that lay before him. “Ian, you have my permission to take care of him. His wounds need to be treated.” Vin’s voice broke the tense silence.
Ian was startled by Vin’s words. He looked down at Orlando, pity in his eyes at what Orlando must have endured the previous night.
Turning abruptly, Vin headed out of the bedroom. He needed to get to the office. He knew Sean would already be waiting for him there.

The past hour was a blur to Vin as he drove toward the office. He loved the smooth vibration and rumbling sound of his car as he shifted gears. He had so much to do today. It seemed the more money he made, the more people were out to get him, especially the ATF. ‘Fucking pigs,’ Vin thought. Detroit was his city and no one was going to take it away from him.
Vin shifted into lower gear as he came to the private entrance that led into his office building. The only other person that had access to the private entrance was Sean. Pulling to a stop, Vin noticed Sean’s car already there. Just like Sean: all work and no play.
Getting out of his car, Vin reached over for his briefcase. Walking toward the private elevator, he was greeted by Colin. “Good morning, Mr. Diesel,” Colin greeted carefully trying to judge Vin’s mood.
“It is a very good morning, Colin,” Vin said, a smile spreading across his face.
Instantly Colin felt more relaxed just by the way Mr. Diesel was smiling. ‘His night must have gone very well,’ Colin thought, ‘because Mr. Diesel rarely smiled. As Vin entered the elevator, Colin joined him, pushing the button to the penthouse offices. “Mr. Diesel, Sean is waiting for you in your office.”
As the elevator stopped on a ding, the doors opened and Vin headed down the long hall leading to his main office. Rare artwork decorated the walls. Vin loved beautiful things and wanted to be surrounded by them. As he passed Jared’s empty desk, a frown crossed his face.
At first glance, upon opening his office door, the room looked empty, but he knew better. Shutting the door, Vin walked over to his desk, laying down his brief case then jacket down silently. He turned to the corner where Sean was sitting.
“Good morning, Sean.” Vin’s voice was surprising pleasant.
“It seem like your morning is already going well.” Sean’s mouth tightened.
“It has, my friend, a very good night and morning, if I have to be honest.” A smile tugged on Vin’s lips, erasing his frown from earlier as he remembered the feel of Orlando’s sleek body.
Walking behind his desk, Vin sat down, throwing his coat onto the near by chair before opening his briefcase. He looked for the envelope whose contents he’d been studying the previous night.
Standing up, Sean walked over and sat in one of the chairs facing Vin’s massive desk. He could honestly say he never envied Vin for anything he owned except one very special thing.
“So tell me, Sean, why do you think we shouldn’t trust this Brad?” Vin asked, staring into Sean’s eyes.
“I just think we need to take caution.” Sean stared right back.
“Why? Because you think you’re the only one that can do the job?”
“I’m the one that can be trusted.”
“Maybe. Then again, maybe not,” Vin stated as a matter of fact.
Sean’s head jerked back as if he’s been slapped. Narrowing his eyes, he opened his mouth but Vin cut him off.
“Don’t take it personally, Sean. I trust you with my life but not with Orlando’s. I see how you look at him when you two are in the same room together. And to be honest, I don’t really mind, but in a situation where you’re alone all the time with him is something I cannot allow.
“I would never betray you, Vin. How could you even think that?” Sean’s voice sounded wounded.
“It wouldn’t start out that way but your human, Sean, and I need someone straight for this job. So let’s just drop it.” Vin’s voice was final.
Vin started dialing Brad’s number without another world. Turning away from Sean, Vin stared out the windows that lined one side of his office. The scene was breathtaking, overlooking the river that ran though the Detroit.
A female voice answered on the other line. “Hello?”
“Hello, is Mr. Pitt there?”
As Vin talked on the phone, Sean’s insides boiled with anger. It seems he could not hide his feelings very well after all, especially when it came to Orlando. He would just have to bide his time for now.
“Mr. Pitt, Diesel here. Meet me at the MGM Grand in forty minutes. Don’t be late.” Vin hung up with a huff of finality in his voice.
Vin faced Sean again, his eyes narrowed as he saw Sean brooding behind his perfectly constructed mask of indifference. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
“Nothing!” Sean’s voice was a little sharper then he meant it to be.
Vin just stared into Sean’s eyes, his frown deepening as each second passed.
Sean had to get a hold of himself before he broke. He forced a smile on his face. “All I’m saying, Vin, is that we need to be careful when it comes to Brad. Orlando Is like a nephew to me and I don’t want anything to happen to him. We have a lot of enemies and they know your weakness. That is all I’m saying, Vin.”
Vin knew Sean was lying but he would let it go for now. He needed Sean and he didn’t want to push him away with his jealousy.
Vin smiled, as he leaned down to cup the side of Sean’s head. “You always watch out for me.”
The tension in the room dissipated like nothing had even happen.
“Sean, get the guys ready. We’ve got a meeting to attend to.”
Sean headed for the doors without further instruction. None was needed.
“Sean.”
Sean turned around, his eyes catching Vin’s.
“What about Jared? How did he do?” Vin carefully controlled his voice as he questioned Sean.
Sean had to admit even to himself that Jared did well. “He did good last night, Vin. You would have been proud of him.”
Sean turned back to the door.
“Sean.”
Sean stopped and waited like the obedient puppy he really was.
“Don’t worry about this Brad guy. I trust no one when it comes to Orlando.”
Sean gave him a sharp nod as he headed out the door, their momentary fight already forgotten as he went to set up everything.
