Chapter 7
Later that night I’m sitting on my bed, writing letters to all my friends back home. All of the guys are talking together about guy stuff, but I’m not really paying attention to any of it.
That guy I met earlyer, Lieutenant Jackson, does have the bed next to mine. He looks like he’s writing letters like me. I can’t tell really.
Stephen comes over and sits on my bed. “Hey, what are you doing?”
“Writing letters to people.”
“I see, why don’t you come and hang with us?” I can tell he is trying to make me feel better.
“That’s ok, I’m kinda tired anyways.”
“Oh, come on.” he grabs my hand and drags me to their little circle. Lieutenant Jackson gets up and goes to take a shower.
“Hey guys, this is Fae.” I sit down next to Stephen, and they go around the circle introducing themselves to me.
“Hi, my name is Mitch. I’m 28 years old, and I’m from Germany.” The first guy says.
“Hi, my name is John. Actually it’s Shan, but everyone calls me John. I don’t know why. Oh, I’m 26 years old, and I’m from the US.”
“Hi. My name’s Robin. I’m 27 years old, and I’m from the US also.”
The rest of the names are just a blur. I’m not really paying attention anymore. I’m watching Lieutenant Jackson. He has just come out of the shower. He is just in a towel. He walks up to us and says, “Hey yall. Sorry I didn’t get to introduce myself to you, Fae. I was in the shower. My name is Adam, I’m 25 years old, and I’m from the US. I’m sorry but I’ve got to get to bed. Yall should also. We’ve got a big day tomorrow, and it’s past 2 in the morning.” He walks off.
I get up and get ready for bed. I’m in the bathroom, brushing my teeth, when Robin comes in to brush his teeth. “Hey Fae. So why exactly did you end up coming here, to the war?”
“Well the president ordered me to go.”
“Really? I would hate to be ordered to do something against my will. I don’t think that’s really fair.”
“Ya, but I don’t mind it too much.”
“But what about your parents? Aren’t they upset about the fact that you are here?”
“My parents are dead.”
“Oh my god. I’m so sorry. Forget I said anything.”
“It’s ok, it happened over a year ago.”
“Still, I’m sorry. Well good night. See you in the morning.” And with that, he walks out of the room.
I change my clothes and get into bed. The cabin looks so different at night. It smells like pine, and freshly cut wood. The moon light is shining in through the windows, and the screen door. I stare up at the bunk above me. Almost everyone is asleep now, except me. I take out my flashlight and my notebook and I start writing about my day.
“Can’t sleep?” Stephen says.
“I’m just thinking, what about you? Did I wake you?”
“No I can’t sleep. So how was your first day?”
“It was good. A little weird, but ok. It’s kinda strange being one of the olnly girls.” I’m now starting to get tired.
“That’s good.”
“I think I’m gonna go to bed now. Good night.”
“Good night Fae.”
