Edward had barely made it to Randi's apartment building before the sun was out enough to really hurt him. It had taken him a little longer to sense her than he had first thought. But at least he did find her. That's all that really mattered. All he had to do now was get into her apartment. It sounded so much easier than it was really going to be. He reached the front door. What was he supposed to do now? He wasn't just going to barge into the place. That wouldn't get him anywhere. Knocking. There, that seemed like a nice, civilized way to go about this. He ran a hand through his hair. Knocking? A vampire who knocked on doors, how quaint. He raised his hand to do the unspeakable.
The front door flew open before he had a chance to knock. The purpled haired guy in front of him looked as shocked as Edward felt. Stephan slammed the door shut. A moment later the door was thrown open and an arm pulled Eward into the apartment. Another person ran into him and shoved him to the ground. Edward twisted so he landed on his back. He instinctively brought his arms up to protect his face.
"Stop this, now!" Daniel yelled.
"But you know what he wants!" Phillip said, keeping Edward on the ground. He made no move to push the were-animal off of him. No need to give him a reason to start fighting or biting.
"He hasn't done anything to cause his harm as of now. Let him up, Phillip." Daniel told him. Phillip lingered a moment and then stood up off Edward. Edward remained on the floor. He wasn't sure if anyone else was going to jump on him. "I give you my word that no one will harm you on this visit."
"I appreciate that, Daniel." He said standing up. "Savannah spoke of you. I didn't think the two of you still talked."
"So you still remember?" Daniel asked. Edward nodded.
"After all these years. I am still a friend and a safe place to run to." Daniel raised a brow. The way he worded it made him a little nervous.
"Has something happened to her?"
"A vampire attacked her house. She was pretty tore up. Her body refuses to keep blood down. I'm worried about her." Daniel balled his hands into fists at his side. He was furious. But he couldn't do anything about it now. Not yet anyway.
"I'm going to let you take her. But I'm going to tell you why and with a condition."
"Daniel, you cannot do this." Stephan said appalled. Edward stood there shocked. He was going to let Randi go with him? And he didn't have to convince him? There had to be a catch.
"Stephan, this is my decision. Do not argue with me. Come, Edward." He motioned towards the bedroom door. Edward walked through it. Only Daniel's hand on his arm kept him from running to her.
Randi was so pale. Almost as pale as he was. She looked so fragile on the bed. Her hair was plastered to her face with sweat. Nausea swept over Edward and he sank to his needs on the floor.
"Edward, are you alright?" Daniel asked.
"Yeah," he answered "I just feel a little sick."
"A vampire who feels sick. Now that's just funny." Daniel said laughing, bringing Edward to his feet.
"It's new to me, too. But she's the one who's sick. I just feel it."
"So Savannah was right. Randi is your other half."
"Why are you going to let me take her?" Daniel looked at Randi.
"Because I would rather see her bound to you than dead. I won't let her die. Not like this."
"And what's the condition?"
"I want Phillip to go with her. Just to make sure she makes it through the bonding. I don't want anyone to try anything. It'll make me feel better to know that he's there." Daniel explained.
"You want me to bring a shifter into a full house of vampires? And I thought this was going to be easy." he smiled. Edward swayed from side to side.
"You need to sleep don't you?" Daniel said. Edward closed his eyes and nodded. "Sleep in the bed." Edward's eyes shot open. "I think it'll do both of you some good." Edward looked at Daniel for a moment then walked to the bed. He climbed on it and moved behind her. He carefully slid his arm around her. She felt so cold. Her body was like ice. Was this normal?
"I'll make sure no one comes in the room or tries to open the curtains. You'll be safe here until dark."
"Thank you, Daniel." Daniel shook his head.
"Do not thank me, Edward. Thank Savannah." he gave a small smile then closed the door behind him.
Edward stared at Randi. He couldn't believe that he was finally able to be next to her. To figure out what this bonding really was. He leaned in towards her neck and breathed in her scent. She smelled like the earth. As if all the smells in natures had been combined into one smell. The earth, trees, grass, all of it. The smell was almost overwhelming. There was another smell mixed in with the rest. It was faint. It was the sun. How was that possible? No one could smell like the sun. But she did.
Randi stirred on the bed. Edward didn't move. She turned so that she was facing him. Her eyes slowly opened and it took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust. When her eyes took in who was in front of her, she gasped and tried to push away.
"No, Randi, it's alright. I'm not going to hurt you. I want to help you." he said softly. Randi stopped trying to get away from him. Instead she relaxed under his arm. It felt right to be this close to him.
"Are you really going to help me get better?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, you can count on it." he told her. "Now get some rest." he kissed her forehead gently and kept his grip tight around her.
"Okay." she whispered, closing her eyes. Edward watched her as she slept for a few minutes until his own need for sleep consumed him, and he became dead to the world.
Outside the room, the others were trying not to yell at each other. "Are you really going to let Edward take her? Do you know what will happen to her?" Stephan asked. He had been pacing the room ever since Edward went into the bedroom.
"Probably more than any of you. Now, it's settled. Randi is going with Edward." Everyone started to protest. Daniel held up a hand. "Phillip is also going to go with them to make sure nothing happens to her before the bonding."
"What is it about this bonding that you're so hard up on?" Phillip asked.
"If she doesn't then she will die. I wish you two would stop arguing with me about this." Daniel said, his voice starting to rise.
"It's because of that vampire. If she hadn't shown up you would never have agreed to this. Who is she to you? What kind of hold is it? Does she give herself over to you? Is that it?" Stephan asked angrily. Daniel lept across the room onto Stephan. They landed on the floor hard. Daniel wrapped one hand around Stephan's neck. His face was close enough that Stephan could feel Daniel's breath on his face.
"Don't you ever talk about Savannah like that ever again. Or I will remind you who your leader is. Do you understand me?" He asked furiously. "Stephan nodded. "Say it!" Daniel yelled.
"I got it!" Stephan yelled back. Daniel let go of his neck and stood up.
"No one is to go in that room before dark. None of you." He turned away from them all and left the apartment in an angry rush.
"Do you want him to rip into you or are you just stupid?" Faye asked from where she had been sitting, not daring to speak. "Never, ever speak about Savannah in that way to him."
"How was I supposed to know?" Stephan said standing up.
"You mean you don't know?" She asked shocked.
"Don't know what?" Stephan asked. She looked at Phillip and he shrugged.
"What is it, Faye?" Phillip asked.
"If you don't know then it is not my place to tell you. Before all this is over he will more than likely tell you." Faye told them. She began to walk past Stephan into the kitchen. He grabbed her arm.
"No, you tell us, right now." He said coldly. Faye just looked at his hand on her arm.
"Let me go." she tried pulling her arm free. With one jerk of his arm, Stephan threw Faye back into the living room. But instead of hitting a wall, she went straight through the glass doors leading to the balcony outside. He threw her with such force that she kept going and broke through the brick wall that made up the ledge. Faye tried to grab onto something to hang on to. There was nothing.
"Phillip!" she screamed, knowing he wouldn't reach her. He had already starting running for her when she had first hit the glass. He threw himself to the ground and slid across the glass coated balcony. His fingers grazed her wrist but he didn't have enough grip. Faye went over the sixth story balcony ledge to meet the ground below.
"Faye!" he yelled as he watched her fall. People on the street screamed. They looked up to see where she had fallen from. Phillip yanked himself away from the edge. He couldn't get himself to stand or think. His breathing was putting him on the verge of hyperventilating.
"I should rip you apart!" Phillip growled. His eyes began to bleed a dark golden color; lion eyes.
"You don't kill family." Stephan said backing away from him.
"Like you didn't kill Faye?" Phillip said standing up.
"It was an accident, I swear." Phillip roared. He didn't care who heard him. He tenses his muscles, ready to lunge into Stephan but the sirens stopped him. The police were there.
"You're lucky. We have to get Randi and Edward out of here." Phillip moved away from Stephan.
"We can't. Edward can't go out in the day and Randi's too sick to move. We'll have to come back for them." Stephan said. Phillip was not happy. He did not want to leave either of them. But Stephan was right. They had to go. Together the two of them left the apartment to run from the police.
