Seven
:::::::Yea, this is a short one!! And I’m sorry, but the suspense just screams to be prolonged!!:::
When Kerry returned with two glasses and a large pitcher of lemonade, Grant was still sitting on the couch. His hands were folded in his lap and he had the same semi-blank look on his face. Not like he had totally checked out, but unaware, like a child. Kerry sat down beside him, patted him on the knee, and began to pour the lemonade. “So, Grant….” his name hung there for a moment, “you seem to have figured out something. Would you like to tell me about it?” Their eyes met as she handed him the glass. She could see, really see his face now, and it seemed not as unaware and innocent as it had a moment ago.
“Well yes, I would like to tell you about it!” he said, taking the glass from her and downing about half of it in one swig. “I figured out that you and Kerry are one in the same…”
Kerry just about choked on her swallow of lemonade! She started coughing and sputtering and Grant had to slap her on the back several times before she could get a word out.
“Wh, wh, one in the same?” she stammered. His statement had caught her off her guard to say the least. “Whatever are you talking about? One in the same?” Kerry began to argue, then realized, the jig was up, the play was over, she was finally busted like she thought she should have been hours ago. It was almost a relief.
Grant went on, “Yes, yes, one in the same, that is to say, because of your being identical twins, having come from one egg that split in two, a person could conclude that you are two halves of the same person!” That broad smile broke out on his face again and Kerry realized that he was crazy and still believed her to be her own twin sister.
She set her glass down on the table and stood up, “NO! No, no, Grant!” now it was her turn to pace, “This is all screwed up! I never thought it would get like this. Not like this! I figured for sure somebody would figure it out, or one of the guests would spill the beans!! It shouldn’t have gone on like this. DAMN!! I’ve really done it this time!!” Kerry was so lost in her own self admonishment, she didn’t hear Grant speak.
“Really? Did what this time, Kerry?”
Kerry took three, maybe four more steps, and then you could almost see the light bulb go off over her head, as she turned with narrowing eyes and raised brow to face Grant she asked “What did you just say?” .
