“I feel like dancing!” Tiera cried from the bedroom of the hotel room, her best friend hiding in the bathroom and still trying to figure out which makeup to wear that night. “I hope one of those sexy men pulls me up on stage. I would love to grind against a body!”
“How does your boyfriend feel about that?” Rhapsody called, her hands shaking a little as she reached for the eye shadow. Every new bride was nervous the night before her wedding; she just hoped that this nervousness eased when she was out with her friends.
“Oh, right, because Taryn won’t be enjoying some stripper,” Tiera laughed. “I am allowed to dance, just as long as I don’t come back to the hotel room with some random stripper.”
Rhapsody popped her head out of the door and looked over at her friend, who was dressed in a white dress that showed off her petite curves so perfectly. She looked like she should have been the blushing virgin bride. “Are you and Taryn still waiting?”
Tiera nodded. “You know Mom would kill me if I ended up how I did when… before… It took a long time for Mom to completely forgive me, but I think she almost trusts me now.”
Rhapsody smiled and began to close the door again, but Tiera slithered her way into the bathroom with Rhapsody and looked her over. Rhapsody was the epitome of curvaceous beauty, something she could attribute perfectly to her mother. Her face, however, held an innocence that shone through, though her eyes were darkened with soul-rending pain.
“So are you going to wear a nice pair of break-away panties tomorrow under your dress?” Tiera asked hopefully. “That would be so neat. He’s expecting this perfect beauty with underwear meant to trim down the stomach in a tight dress, and he finds these things he can just break off. Oh my God, I bet Sora can’t wait to get you alone.”
“I think you have grown to be a pervert in your old age,” Rhapsody laughed, her hand still shaking as she went to apply her lipstick.
“Yeah, well we haven’t all been enjoying the chaste angelic lifestyle we have chosen the last five years,” Tiera retorted. At Rhapsody’s silence Tiera scrunched up her nose and moved closer to Rhapsody, gazing at their faces in the mirror. “You and Sora HAVE done it, haven’t you?”
“No!” Rhapsody nearly screeched. She stepped away from the mirror and threw her lipstick into the stink, never having applied the color to her bottom look. “No,” she said honestly, “Sora and I have never had sex.”
“Rhapsody, there has been someone or else you would not be so jittery.” Tiera was more perceptive than Rhapsody often gave her credit for, but she was more surprised it had taken her three years to see that Rhapsody had been hiding this secret.
“Rhapsody?”
“I think I hear someone at the door.” Rhapsody bolted and made for the door of the hotel room. She threw it open and almost passed out from sheer relief at the sight of Mercedes before her.
“Happy Bachelorette Day!” Mercedes cried out and through glitter over Rhapsody’s head. “I know, not a real special occasion, but one women should celebrate everywhere, because they are losing their livelihood!”
Rhapsody smiled and reached forward to hug Mercedes, never having been so grateful in all her life to see Shu’s girlfriend. Mercedes knew that if Rhapsody knew the truth she would have been more grateful even sooner. “Come on in,” she invited. Rhapsody stepped back in, now covered in a shimmery glitter that added a bit of panache to her dark outfit and made her look only more the part of an angel.
“You only finished your top lip,” Mercedes told Rhapsody, who instantly clamped her hands over her mouth. “Hi Tiera, no shock that you would be the first one here to support Rhapsody on her last night of being the single sexy bachelorette beauty.”
“That was a bit repetitive,” Tiera pointed out, though she smiled while saying it.
“So sue me,” Mercedes laughed. Rhapsody excused herself to finish her lipstick and left Mercedes and Tiera alone together. There was no animosity between the two though the awkward silence was still there. Tiera and Mercedes had nothing in common, Tiera having been a studious good girl who had closely begun to follow in Link’s footsteps, Mercedes being an ex-druggie with an affection for leather and Shu, two things Tiera found distasteful, but not enough to drive a wedge in friendship.
“Do you think it odd,” Mercedes began, stepping further into the hotel and looking out at the fountains in the back of it, enjoying the luxury of the spurting waters that were just beginning to brighten with colored lights, “that you and Bliss get along so well, but we still find things awkward, though Bliss is actually gruffer than I am.”
“This is true,” Tiera admitted, “but I grew up with Bliss. I had no choice but to deal with her. I hope you don’t think I don’t like you because of it, though.”
“Nah, that shit doesn’t bother me,” Mercedes waved it off and smoothed the lavender skirt that hugged her curves. The black blouse was an offset to an outfit that would have been perfect in the eighties, and yet Mercedes pulled it off beautifully.
“Good,” Tiera sighed. “You know, your timing couldn’t have been worse,” she added, hoping to make this silence companionable.
She actually seemed to have taken the right course of action with Mercedes this time. “Oh?” she asked, a crook of her eyebrow the indication she found this more intriguing than a hurtful course of action.
“Rhapsody was just about to reveal to me an affair she had before she had agreed to marry Sora.”
Rhapsody chose that moment to step out of the bathroom and turned to face the two girls, holding her hands up as if to ask how she looked. Neither girl was interested, though both found her beautiful. Mercedes was the one to ask. “So who was the guy before Sora?”
Rhapsody let out a bit of nervous laughter and her eyes darted about the room. She quickly sniffed then said, “I forgot my perfume,” and raced back into the bathroom, slamming the door behind her.
“Are you kidding me?” Tiera asked.
“I can smell your perfume from here!” Mercedes cried back.
Tiera and Mercedes rushed up to the door, trying the knob and finding she had locked herself successfully inside. “Rhapsody, you can’t keep something like this from your best friend!” Tiera cried.
“Or your … um… uncle’s brother’s girlfriend!” Mercedes cried back. Tiera gave the girl a look that could only be described as incredulous and Mercedes shrugged.
The door slowly opened and both the tough girl and the smart girl stepped back almost afraid when they saw Rhapsody standing there, having gone from a glittering beauty to a sordid mess. Her mascara ran (always wear waterproof, girls!) and her face was torn into a sob she would not release. “I… I… I can’t do this!” With those words she threw herself into Tiera and Mercedes arms and began to sob.
