Chapter Seven
Anya and Kendra sat at their kitchen counter with mirrors in front of them, doing their make-up. Anya glanced over at her friend. Kendra was making a hilarious face, her eyes bugged out and her mouth hanging open as she lined her eyes with a kohl pencil.
“Doesn’t this remind you of college?” Kendra asked. “Doing our make-up together, drinking margaritas, and getting ready to see the boys play.”
“Yeah, it does.” Anya laughed. “ I guess it helps that everyone we know from school that’s living in the city now is going to be there tonight. I kinda miss everyone and all the parties we used to have.”
“Yeah well, it was getting kind of old. Time to move on…” Kendra laughed. “Although, we’re still living together, the guys are still playing shows, stuff hasn’t changed that much.”
“I’m not a fan of change.”
“Yeah right, out of all of us, you’re the one who has changed the most.”
“How?” Anya asked disbelievingly. Anya looked at herself in the mirror. She hadn’t physically changed since college, but then again it hadn’t even been a year. She applied another layer of dark eye shadow; she was going for the smoky look. It made her hazel eyes pop.
“We’re all in stand still. The guys all have crummy jobs during the day and they play music at night. They’re still waiting for their big break. I’m still in school. It’s a different type of school but it’s school all the same. You’re the only one who is like starting a career or anything.”
“Oh that.” Anya rolled her eyes. “I hardly call making copies, getting coffee, and organizing clothing, starting a career.”
“It’s only a matter of time hun. Look, you’ve already got that piece that’s gonna be in the magazine in April. Face it, you’re growing up little lady.” Kendra smiled at her. “You know we’re all terribly proud of you, right?”
“God, Kendra, are you trying to make me cry tonight?” Anya leaned over to give her friend a kiss on the cheek. “Thank-you though, you’ve always been my biggest fan.”
“Nah, Adrian’s got that covered now.”
“What?” Anya looked at her skeptically. “One, Adrian is a boy. Two, he can’t compete with history. And three, if you recall, Adrian and I didn’t make a pledge to be friends forever when we were thirteen and skinny dipping at your lake house.”
Kendra burst into laughter. “Oh God, I forgot about the pact. We were hysterical kids.”
“We still are.” Anya took a sip of her drink. “Come on Lumpy, I want to be seriously intoxicated by the time we get to the club.”
“Oh, Coconut.” Kendra responded, using their childhood nicknames. “You can get as drunk as you want but you’re still going to have to face him tonight.”
“I know, but it’s gonna be a million times easier if I’m drunk.” Anya took another sip. “Promise to stop me from making a fool out of myself?”
“Wouldn’t be just like old times if I didn’t.” Kendra promised.

Rumors was already getting crowded by the time Kendra and Anya showed up.
“Lucas, we’re out front now.” Kendra was on her cell phone and Anya was clutching on to her for warmth. Both girls were poorly dressed for the cold weather, but most importantly they looked great. Kendra was wearing a short mini dress that she had sewn especially for the occasion with matching knee-high boots and Anya was wearing a baby-doll halter top and a short denim mini.
“Okay, bye babe.” Kendra slid her phone back into her purse. “He’s coming out to get us.”
“He better get his ass out here.” Anya giggled.
“Sweetie, you’re drunk.” Kendra laughed, steering Anya towards the club’s side door.
“Just a little.” Anya kept laughing. “Ooooh! There’s Lucas!”
“My favorite ladies.” Lucas gave them each a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “You both look incredibly sexy.”
“If I were straight, I’d be all over you.” Kendra laughed.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Lucas put his arm around Anya’s shoulders. “Anya, are you drunk?”
“How’d you know?” Anya asked, her eyes wide as she stared up at him. Lucas and Kendra both laughed at her.
“Babe, it’s not that hard to tell. You’ve got the goofiest grin on your face. But not to worry because I love drunk Anya.”
“And drunk Anya loves you Lucas.” Anya threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
“See, this is what I’m talking about.” Lucas put his other arm around Kendra. “Two sexy ladies and the night is still young. Come on, we’re just chillin in the back.” Lucas said leading them deeper “behind the scenes” in the club.
“I’m so excited.” Kendra told him. “This show is going to be amazing. Who’s opening for you?”
“The Ministers.” Lucas told them. “They’re pretty good.”
Lucas showed them where the other members of the band were hanging out. Adrian and Carter were both sitting on the couch drinking beers and Tom and fiancé, Caitlin, were sitting on another one. The room was dark and smoky, just the way Anya imagined it would be. Adrian looked up as his brother came into the room with the girls. His eyes automatically meeting Anya’s. She blinked and looked away.
“Hey guys.” Kendra immediately went and plopped down with Caitlin and Tom, who she hadn’t seen in a while. Carter reached out and pulled Anya’s hand , pulling her over to where he and Adrian were sitting. He helped her take off her coat and tossed it into the pile with the others.
“You’re looking very hot right now.” Carter wiggled his eyebrows.
“I’m drunk, but I’m not that drunk.” Anya laughed at Carter’s expression.
“Well let’s fix that then. What do you want to drink?” Carter asked standing up.
“A beer would be good.” Anya told him. She was turned towards him, blocking Adrian out a little. Just being this close to him was making her nervous.
“Anyone else want anything?” Carter went over to ask the others, leaving the awkward pair alone together.
“Excited?” Anya asked. She laid back against the couch and turned her head towards Adrian. He seemed to be very interested in the beer that was in her hands. She, on the other hand, didn’t have anything to distract her.
“Yeah…it’s gonna be good. We’ve got some new songs.” Adrian gave a little glance over at her. “Should be cool.”
“Adrian?’ Anya asked after the long pause started to bother her. “Does it have to be awkward?”
“No, I don’t want it to be.” Adrian told her. He reached over and took her hand in his and Anya laced her fingers through his. They smiled shyly at each other.
“I’m not mad at you, I’m sorry for how I acted.” Anya told him. “It’s just that-“
“Anya, are you sure you want to talk about this now?” Adrian asked her. He could tell she was drunk and he wasn’t sure talking about this right now, especially before the show, was a good idea for either of them. Anya’s hurt expression made Adrian pause. He let go of her hand and put his arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer. “Later, okay? After the show, I promise.”
“Okay fine.” Anya sighed and rested her head against his shoulder. “You smell good. Like boy. And cigarettes. And soap. And chocolate. Oooh! I want chocolate!”
Adrian laughed at her. “Have I ever told you, you’re hilarious when you’re drunk?”
