Chapter 6- Unknown Emotions

And another chapter down...

Chapter 6

John slumped into his bed. It had been another tiring day. Once again, his body felt drained of all energy. Ever since he started his training to learn magic 3 days ago, he had failed to cast another spell, with or without the book to help him. It felt like his body was playing a game against him, like some sort of joke. He thought about quitting the whole thing, when Jessica came in.

"Are you awake?"

"Yeah… say Jessica can I ask you something? What's heaven like?"

Jessica smiled a bit. "You really want to know?"

John nodded his head, although he didn't expect the answer he got.

"To tell you the truth, I'm not sure how I could describe heaven to anyone. I've lived there my entire existence, and yet… No word I can think of could accurately describe the place."

John frowned. "I always believed heaven was a place… where everything your heart desires was fulfilled."

"In a sense, you're only half right. While it is true heaven does leave a sense of fulfillment, it is not always to what our hearts desire. But then again, it would be hard for any human to actually honestly say what his heart's desire is."

"And what about you? What is your heart's desire?"

Jessica looked perplexed at this. She thought to herself about it. What did she desire? Was it anything really? Having lived her existence as an angel, she knew little to nothing about the desires of mankind. Although she did know that each person's deepest desire was different for every person.

"I guess I've… never really thought about that before. You surprise me sometimes."

"I do?" John smirked. He supposed surprising an angel was a hard thing to do.

"Yes. Angels always wonder about how life would be like as a human. Of course, we would forfeit all our powers and such to do it. And more importantly…"

Suddenly Jessica didn't want to say more. For an angel to stay as a human required two things. One was forfeiting their powers and wings. But they also needed something on earth itself to attach to, to connect with. And usually, that meant with another person.

"And…"

"And none of your business John. You better get some rest."

John seemed irritated, but decided against saying anything more on the subject. Turning in bed, he wished her goodnight, and Jessica wandered into the kitchen. She looked back to the bedroom and thought about life as a human. What would it be like, to feel things the way human do? And having a human soul and live life on earth? She had never seriously considered this before, but meeting John seemed to change her thinking.

"Beware… beware of him."

Was this… what you were trying to warn me of?

The next morning, John awoke as usual and got dressed. Deciding to skip out on breakfast, John walked outside to the targets. He felt more determined then usual as he decided to strike each one down. Raising his hand he shouted the fire spell. And like before, his hand suddenly got warm.

Unfortunately, also like before, that was all that happened. John cursed and prepared to try again. He thought of his mother, and how proud she would look to see her son casting magic, like she would have intended him to learn. He shouted the spell again, and again, nothing happened.

"Damn! Come on… have to concentrate…"

He thought of his father, the person he looked up to most. The person who's life was taken away by demons. The thought made his blood boil. He raised his hands, and tried the spell once more.

"Fire!"

But nothing happened. Nothing seemed to work. John was starting to get frustrated. He tried to concentrate more, and suddenly, as though it happened on his own, he thought about Jessica. He thought about how the demon from what felt like so long ago had almost succeeded in killing her…

"Fire!"

Suddenly from his hand, a burst of flame erupted. It struck one of the targets and set it ablaze.

"Alright! I did it!"

"Yes you did."

John turned around to see Jessica standing there. He looked to her and seemed to see her a bit differently then before, although nothing about her actually changed. She still wore te same white robes, still had the wings from her back. Her hair, which had a soft golden look to it, was still the same, as her amber eyes. He shook his head to clear his mind and smiled.

"How long have you been there?"

"A little while. Why not have a snack for a reward?"

John smiled and headed to the house. He felt like he should have told her how he cast the magic. That the sight of her in danger just brought upon this natural feeling of doing everything in his power to protect her… to save her…

However, deciding against it, he walked inside saying nothing.
