Chapter 7

Where the Fish Swim - Chapter 7

My sleep breaks and I awaken to a warm feeling across my face. The sunlight filters into the room turning my eyelids red. I raise my hand to shade my eyes as they flutter open to take in the sights of a new day.

The sun filters in through a half open window in the dark wooded wall across from me. I am laying on what feels to be a feather filled bed which is right under the dark, slanted roof.

Through the semi-open window noise filters in. I can hear several people talking and laughing. I hear something else beyond that. It sounds to be whistles, screaches, and clicks.

"What the hell is that" I think to myself sitting up. I walk over to towards the window. As I am about to reach it, the sunlight is obstructed as a feathery projectile smashes through the window into my face knocking my square on my ass.

"Yahhhhhhhhh" I scream as I struggle to pull the chirping object from my face. I finally pull it from my face. It is a brown and tan bird, about the size of my head, who is tilting his head in curiousity.

"What the hell is this" I scream as Miles walks in through the door frame.

"Dat's Limak. He's a griffyn"

I glare over at Miles. "Is that so? That's great. Why the hell is he smashing into my face?"

Miles fails to stifle his laughter.

"Well" I question Miles angrily.

"I sent em to wake ya up man" Miles replies wiping his eyes.

"Thanks a lot" I reply with venom dripping from my words."Where's Kari?"

"Dis way man" Miles replies walking out the door.

I follows Miles out the door with the bird still in my outstretched arms. I am amazed by what I see.

The main road in the village is made of blue grass. On both sides of the road are houses made of the same dark wood as Miles'. The houses all have green roofs that appear to be made of moss. A bid farther down the road there are several dozen people gathered, talking adamantly. I believe this to be the market.

This is when I notice the first really odd thing of this village. There are tons of birds, like the one I am holding, all over the village. They are on window sills, roofs, carts, and even the people.

"You comin" Miles yells at me. Realizing that I had just been standing there, I nod and run after him.

"Not too bad, eh" Miles asks.

I shake my head as I trudge along.

"Ya know, ya can let Limak go any time now man" Miles says, motioning to the bird still in my hands.

"Oh! Right then" I say throwing the bird, who swooped back around and sits on my shoulder, rubbing affectionately against my cheek. "What the hell is with this bird?"

Miles chuckles to himself. "Seems he's taken a likin to ya."

"Swell" I reply, walking onwards"

A short while later, after walking through a meadow of flowers, I see Kari sitting on what appears to be the edge of the land. She appears to be making things out of flowers. She must have been here for a while bacause she already had a crown of flowers along with a matching bracelett. I can't help but notice how beautiful she looks like this.

Shaking my head to clear it of those thoughts I call out to her. "Kari-chan!" She looks up at me and smiles as she gets to her feet and runs towards me. She tackles me so hard it knocks me onto my back in the meadow and causing the bird to yell indignantly and take flight. "It's nice to see you too" I say laughing.

Kari grins at me and lays down on my chest. She had never done this to me bofore. amay heart begins to beat fast as I lay there.

"Kiro-chan" she whispers. The sound of her sweetly whispering my name makes my heart flutter. "Why do I feel like this? Why am I reacting like this? It's just Kari" I think to myself.

Miles clears his throat loudly causing Hikari to jump slightly and get off of me.

"What do you plan to do now" Miles questions. "You could always stay here in this village. It's pretty friendly and we actually have a vacant house over on the one side of the village" Miles offers.

I sadly shake my head as Limak perches on my shoulder once again. "We can't do that. We need to get back to our own village. We don't belong here, Acutally, we should be going." Hikari nods in agreement.

"Well, if that is the way you must be" Miles starts before calling to Limak. He whispers something to Limak shortly before Limak takes flight. A short while later Limak returns with two bigger griffyns and a gun. Miles grabs the gun from Limak as a griffyn grabs onto his shoulders and lifts him into the air. The other two griffyns do the same and pick Hikari and myself up into the air.

"I can't jus let you guys get killed. I'll walk wit ya till you get there."

"Thank you" Hikari yells to him as I grunt.

Being carried at a great height like this by this small bird is not helping my confidence in Miles. I look back over my shoulder and my jaw drops. The village is on a giant chunk of land floating high in the sky. I remember Miles mentioning it last night, but I never thought he meant it was actually in the sky. My face distorts as I try not to think about how the thing that is keeping my alive and in the sky is this small bird.

Quite a while later we are nearing the ground finally. We appear to be landing at the edge of some woods and a field.

"There is a town half a day's walk from here through these woods" Miles explains.

As we are about ten feet from the ground, the sunlight is suddenly blocked. My griffyn screaches in pain as it lets me drop roughly to the ground. I hit the ground quite hard, making my arm bleed slightly. I look up into the sky to see the horor unfold.

A giant yellow bird with huge black talons , unlike which I have ever seen before, has just finished eating my griffyn and moves to attack Hikari's. Hikari screams as her griffyn cruches in the grip of the mighty talons and she is let go into a freefall. I dash as fast as I can and catch her in my arms.

Hikars stares at me, looking into my eyes with a warm blush spreading across her face that makes my heart skip a beat.

"Shit!" Miles' curse brought us back to reality. The large bird had grabbed Miles as Limak had dropped him to flee. The large black talons have ripped into the flesh of his chest.

Miles struggles to get his gun off of his back. His fingars finally enclose around it and he shoots up at the bird's head and misses. The bird, now irritated, bites deeply into Miles' neck, spraying blood as it breaks the veins and arteries. Blood begins to run freely down his neck and soak his cloths in a deep scarlet. Miles screams and, griping the gun tightly in pain, shoots the bird's head into tiny pieces of red matter.

Miles falls roughly to the ground and the bird lands heavily on top of him. Hikari and myself run over and hoist the bird off of Miles, fearing the worst. What we see is near it. Miles is covered in blood which is pouring from the chunk missing from his neck as he lays there in the growing puddle of red.

"Damn Harpy" Miles mutters with his teath chattering.

"Not good at all" comes a the voice of a elderly female from behind us.

"Who are you" I ask turning around in shock and looking down at the small woman carrying a bag of plants.

"No time for introductions right now. Your friend needs help now. Carry him to my cabin in the woods right away!"

Not wanting to take chances and thinking of nothing better to do at the moment, I hoist the bleeding and shivering Miles onto my back and start to follow the old woman into the woods.

"She had better know what she is talking about" I think to myself as my kimono begins to get soaked in a warm stream of blood.

End of chapter 7

What did you think? I hope I have drawn you all into the story by now. I am sorry I haven't been writing more often, but I will soon. Promise. Right now I have college finals and christmas to worry about.

You have no clue how much trouble writing this chapter was for me. I was over half way done writing it on the internet explorer when the page froze! No saves or anything! I was so mad! After like 5 minutes I slapped myself for being so down and started over again! So I hope you enjoyed this chapter.

Tell me what you think! benschoedel@hotmail.com is my e-mail. Remember, when people write me about the story it gives me inspiration. Inspiration makes me write more!
